State Champions: 40 Straight Wins!! Chiloquin stayed with the Loggers into the 4th quarter when they were outscored 30-20 by the hot-shooting Vernonians (39 of 62 from the field .629). It was a spectators dream game as the Loggers advanced in the winners bracket with a 91-81 win. Vemonia wanted to play Regis, having lost to them before. Against Regis, the Loggers struggled on both ends of the court. It was Royce Sturdevant's 19 rebounds that kept the Rams at bay while the Loggers played good enough to win. It was a close 69-67 win for the cold weakened defending champions. The Loggers played the first half of the Championship game with Harrisburg much the same as they had played the semifinal game and trailed 31-24 at the half. Coach Curtis' halftime charge was simply: If our effort to repeat as State Champions is to be denied, if our consecutive win string is to end tonite—let it be because they beat us with us playing our best. The second half began slowly for the Loggers with 4:20 to play in the 3rd quarter it was Eagles 39 Loggers 28, then the Champs scored 11 straight—David Holm's jumper, Sturdevant's three point play, Holm's fast break (assist Dunaway), Johnston's bank shot and Holm's layup (3 4 court pass from Weigand). The lead seesawed most of the 4th quarter with Vemonia breaking in front by five. With 1:40 to play, Harrisburg scored its 59th and last point. David Holm's three point play (Dunaway assist) capped a great half of the play for Vemonia. The game ended with the mighty Vemonia Loggers winning a second State Championship 70-59. Gaylen Weigand was named First Team All Tourney, Kevin Murray was named Second Team All Tourney, but many of the Loggers had to be considered. It was a team effort-YES! 1. J. V. Platooned Not many teams are good enough to win ball games by platooning. Platooning is splitting a team into two units that play equal time. This is the system Coach Crow used with our J. V. guys this year. They came out with some very impressive records. One being League Champs and the other being that they took only three time outs in twenty-two games. Along with the records being made, lessons were being learned. Crow states, The team had a problem with self control this year. This is the area I feel we made some big strides in. I thank Mr. Parrow and My Lord for giving me this group of guys to work with. Front Row: Dan Folnsbee, Dwayne Bates, Scott Lamping, Curt Marxer, David Isaacson. Back Row: Manager, Mike Wright, Darrell Gwin, Ken Smith, Ed Hammerberg, Mike Harrison, Chris Cota, Tony Smith, Coach Gordon Crowston. 1 1. The flying arm of Tony Smith hits the ball to our side. 2. The team chuckles at Coach Crow's reaction to a dumb mistake! 30J.V. Basketball
