County children began leaning the three R's under ground. They didn't study light of the fireplace and rays of a tallow candle as Abraham Lincoln. But they go to school in a half-dugo where the winds howled thro the crevices. But the beginning of tl school system in Vernon, it meager start in the dugout, y was of vital importance to ' cultural, spiritual, and mel tal growth of a town destin1 to become one of Northwest In 1891, when the Texas' leading cities. school population began to increase, the building known as the Central school building was erected. At that time it was thought to be large enough to accom- modate all students for many years. In the meantime, the schools again became crowd- ed and what is now known as the Junior High School was built, then the Shive, West Vernon, Parker, High School building, and last Hawkins. This year, 1941, the fiftieth anniversary of the Vernon school system, in the thriving metropolis which their home town, the day O1 the students recognize as the blue-back Speller and 1 sparsely furnished school- room are merely a part of 1 pages of the history book which elaborates of the NHardships of the early pic neer.H It is the sincere wisl of the editor that, in the years to come, these few pages will serve as an a interesting history to every student of Vernon Hig School, and may these pages reflect the pleasant mem- ories of the GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY of our school.
