V E R M I L L I O N A I R E The Vermillionaire has been published by the high school students for the past twenty-five years. The Vermillionaire was first started in the fall of 1917 but no files were kept of the first copies. It wal then known as the Versodak. ' The paper was first published in booklet form but soon changed to the size we now have. The first Vermillionaires were paid for by adver- tisements and by subscriptions. The paper was sold for fifty cents a year or ten cents a copy. Now, the expenses are paid by the advertise- ments and student activity fees. Two co-editors have been in charge of each page during the year. News page editors are: Marge Wagner, Pat Frankenfeldg editorial page editors: Gwen Hansen, Betty Barton: Sports page editorl: Gene Owens, Buzz Jones: Feature page editors: JoAnn Payton, Dorothy Barton. The second semester Jack De Vany took JoAnn Payton's place as page editor. Business managers for the year were: Bonnie Hanson, Beverly Stride, Donald Wagner, Wayne Wylie, and Ben Westre. Circulation managers are Norma Jean Hendricks, Betty Jorgenson. Charlotte Kaltsulas, Evelyn Jacobsen, Betty Lambert, Joyce Hanson, Bonnie Clark, Yvonne Hansen, and Roberta Bauman were the typists for the different pages. News and feature writers are: Jerry Fraser, Beverly Drafhal, Ben Westre, Helen Armstrong, Roberta Bauman, Dale Firof, Betty Jorgenson, Norma Jean Hendricks, Bonnie Hanson, Beverly Stride, Ellis White, Stanley Lundquist Virgil Leitru, and Clark Strong. Faculty advisor for the Vermillionaire is Miss Elaine Meyer.

This years debate squad consisted of Franklin Papin, Bill Ufford, Charles Anderson, Margie Anderson, jackie jaquith, and Elaine Ostraat. The squad, coached by Miss Page, participated in several tournaments at Yankton, Sioux Falls, and Vermillion. The question this year was, Resolved: That the United States should aid in reconstructing the League of Nations. The season was considered highly successful with very good prospects for next year. Winners of declamation this year were: Oratory, Franklin Pepin, who got an excellent in the district tournamentg Marilyn Dawson Wh0 WON the poetry section: Helen Armstrong in dramatics received a superior in the District, and Bill Ufford received an excellent in humor,in the district.
