In the backfield, Aldridge and Scott. Beset by injuries the entire season, the squad came through with the spirit typical of all V-A squads. Final seasons tally showed a record of nine games won and one lost. The lone loss coming from the hands of a strong Walters team at a time when the Comets were weakened by the loss of ace fullback jackie Scott. Highlights of the season were the Wilson game and the play-off game with Waurika, Everyone knew that the Wilson game would be for the Championship of the 6-B Cbnference, Our Comets chances looked very slim with Gene Aldridge, who, had been carrying a big part of the offensive load badly crippled, Buddy Scott still hobbling around with an early season injury and Keith Harris hardly able to run, Here was a chance for those forgotten lads of the line to come through and come through they did. With one of the most courageous and hard fought games ever played on the Martin field, with savage blocking by Carroll, Ketchum, Wagonseller and the crippled Harris, the Comets sent uScooter"Dix around end for a 6-6 tie and then literally fought their hearts out for the penetrations that gave them the game and their second suc- cessive 6-B Conference Championship, For the second successive year the Comets met the mighty Waurika Eagles in the first round of the state play-off and dropped the game by a score of 21-6. No one who saw the game would ever doubt the courage and hard luck shown and suffered by as fine a group that will ever represent the colors of our high school. Few will soon forget the terrible luck of Scott who after sprinting 40 yards for what looked like a sure touchdown, had the ball squirt out of his hands on the two yard line, or Anderson in the opening with pay dirt in front juggling the elusive pig skin for a good 20 yards before it slipped away, Though defeated the Comets left Waurika with the satisfaction that they had done their best and that they had fought a good fight. And so we look forward to another year and another day when the spirit of these gallant fellows will lead us to victory over these pesky Eagles. The lane is long someone has said that never turns again and, fate though fickle often slips another chance to men, c- C5 . V?
