As you first read these words you will probably not see the truth of the statement. Disappointments, frustrations, and, for many, sheer exhaustion are still fresh in your minds. Fortunately, the good days survive in the mind long after the bad days are all but forgotten. This book, then, will help rekindle the memory of the good days. A familiar, friendly face gazing at you from these pages, or a pic- ture ofa routine evolution, will bridge the gap of years and bring back memories of friends, ports of call and the knowledge of a job well done in which each of you played an important role. For many of you this was your first experience at sea. For others it was your first "peacetime" deployment. No matter what your background, none of you should ever forget the long, lonely nights, the longer, hectic days, and the ever-present, endless sea. These are the heritage of all men of the sea-going profession and this deployment has entitled every man among you to boast of his qualifications in that profession. You have been tested by the force of the raging sea, by collision, fire, flooding and hard work. In the years to come, as you scan through this book, you are entitled to a deep sense of pride. The tests were dangerous and demanding. But you passed them with flying colors and performed the ship's mission in the highest standards of the Naval Service. Good Luck to each of you in the future. May you enjoy fairwinds and following seas no matter what your charted course. Lawrence Fl. Jefferis Commander, U. S. Navy Commanding 4.81.4 IQ 1 ... Everyone should be justly proud in their own contributions, for without the dedication to duty and the many long hours provided by everyone on board, the successful completion of VEGA'S mis- sion could not have been accomplished. Proud beauties all. Proud, too, the men who climbed their masts- High into the winds- Commanding a view of heaven and earth From those lofty, awesome heights. Tall stood those men. Tall, like the canvases that propelled them across the mighty seas. Seas that girdle the shores wherein live the lesser men- Chained to the earth. Bold and brave, the masters of these beauties, With clear eyes and rolling gaits. Fearful of nothing upon the land nor the sea. Aye, with great respect for the mighty elements, and Aye, with greater respect for the men Who defied those elements-and won! A BREED OF MAN IN THE PAST? For then, man created the great and roaring monster. Ugly but efficient. No more the worry o'er the calm seas of the "horse latitudes." No more the worry o'er the howling winds that blow in from Earth's poles. This ugly monster-belching fire and smoke- Cuts through the seas and, defies the elements to do their damndest! And the bold men on deck laugh in the face of danger. No more dependent upon spread canvas for propulsion. f1" BUT-- Dependent, now, upon men who live in the bowels of the ugly monster- To make it belch the fire and smoke. Dependent, now, upon men whose backs bend constantly under the twists and turns of a metal city, That keeps the monster alive. Dependent, now, upon men immersed in black grease and oil That feeds the monster. I Dependent, now, upon men who curse and sweat in never- ending heat, That the monster may live. Dependent, now, upon men ever aware of being trapped in the monster's bowels, Should it shudder and shake and give up its life! THE SAILS HAVE TURNED UPSIDE DOWN! No longer do men climb heavenward to drive their ship. Now do men go into the depths of hell to drive their ship! Proud men still- Seafaring men. Men who know the life of the monster is in their hands, And, Quietly, and skillfully, keep that life alive. ' "Snipes" or "black gang"-whatever the label. ALL HAIL TO YOU, BRAVE AND WORTHY MEN. Stand tall! Tall, like the sails of yore For now YOU are the sails. A BREED OF MEN FOR NOW-AND FOR THE FUTURE. 29 swim call M, 5, 4 4 1 A K ' I ,A I-if ....--A"?. 1 boxing X 5 V L' P 2, . The crew left for their Ft and Fl liberty to many places, among which were: The beautiful city of Bangkok, Pattaya Beachg Sami San, and many of the neighboring villages. For five days we were enjoying and exploring the old and new facets of the land of Siam. Bangkok presented a lot of modern architecture, amid which you still can find old temples, pagodas, and even snake farms. As we left Thailand, our lockers were full of the beautiful jewelry, which the land of Siam is famous for. Happy and un- forgetable experiences were left behind, but never forgotten. x M 1 5'f,.".'1f"" ,. .,,,,,... ,W .. W X1 f ASN, XN x - P Ni" if 2 ' ff 1" 'fuer' 1 2 ' x . Also a great place to spend New Years Eve. The British Crown Colony has much to offer in the way of sights and bargains. Breathtaking trolly ride up to beautiful Victoria Peak enabled us to have the entire view of the harbour. On the Kowloon side the crew had a chance to look at Communist China. There were many options to go shopping. Starting at China Fleet Club, a branch of the Navy Purchasing Department, moving out to many shops and open sidewalk markets. Hong Kong is also well known for its many tailor shops, where VEGA men had an opportunity to expand their wardrobe. Before anyone knew it we had to bid farewell to this exciting port, and prepare for offload in Japan. LIBERTY CALL!
