This year we won distinction among the classes through some of our members, one being vice-president of the Athletic Association, six mem- bers on the basketball teams, and one secretary of our Junior League. After working hard, we won the program contest. During this term we also had some members who went out for track and competed in the County Meet. One or two went to the District Meet. A little later in the year we lost three of our members, leaving eighteen on the roll. We ended the Sophomore year with a much stronger determination of reaching the goal After all of us- had enjoyed ourselves wonderfully well during vacation time, we came back to find ourselves Juniors. We could hardly believe that we were really Juniors, because it seemed only yesterday that we were in the Freshman class, taking up our new studies. We again had some new teachers. Miss Shelburne came in place of Mrs. Stoneman, and Miss Riddell in place of Miss Talley, who became Mrs. Shepherclson soon after the close of school. We again noticed that we had lost some oil our old classmates. One had joined the Sophomore Class, and one did not return. This brought our number down to sixteen. After all of us had begun to work again, two dropped out to find home more interesting. Our number was now fourteen. Our oflicers for this year were: Virginia Nelson .......... ..........,................ P resident Wilmer Hedrick ......,... ..,.....,.............. V ice-President Louise Sadowsky .,........... ........,.... S ecretary-Treasurer Our class was very interested in the activities of the School. We had seven members and one substitute on the basketball teams, four boys on the baseball team, and two on the track team. These boys and girls won us much distinction in the school. Five of our members were on the Stu- dent Council three were on the Annual staff, one president of the Athletic A, iation ,one vice-president and one secretary of the Carrie A. Lyford ssoc Home Economics Club. The vice-president, secretary and treasurer of h l One the F.F.V.'s were from our class. We also published a sc oo paper. of our number named it the Bits of N ews, and we published it with the co-operation of the entire school. After the second term, Thelma Day came to join our class, which creased our number to fifteen. Thelma won honors for our class by win- l23l -1, up ,lu A W 1 A' -'L-'M . After a very pleasant vacation had passed, we came back together to and ourselves still nearer our eoal. We were really Seniors! Who could believe it? Seniors! Yes, really Seniors! We quickly greeted three new Seniors who dropped into our class from the preceding class, and three of our old classmates did not return. After we had settled down and started back to work, Emmett Lipford and Stan- ley Fussell decided they liked home better than school. This year our class is interested in all school activities. We have eight members on the basketball teams, the president and secretary-treasurer of the Athletic Association, the president of the Junior League, the president ol the F.F.V.'s, the president and secretary of the Carrie A. The morning of September 11, 1928, was indeed a great moment in history when we the Glass of 29, began our triumphant marchathrough ldigh Schoo . 2 At the beginning of our Freshman Campaign we were lift y- tgcpur strong, under the generalship of Miss Summers tnow Mrs onemant. Our ranks were so large that Commander-rn-Chief General Baker placed part of our army under the leadership of General tMissll Taylor. Our campaign was very successful, although we had nothing but green militia to start with. When our freshman campaign came to a close in June, after righting the battles of English, Algebra, History, Science and A 'ricult h ' ' g ure, we ad lost only four of our gallant men. In September, 1927, at the opening of our Sophomore Cam- paign, our army had dwindled down to thirty-three. This cam- paign, led by General tMisslt O'Neal. was edually as successful as the first, although we fought harder battles. Our men had the fighting spirit, and during the entire campaign we lost only one man. When our Junior Campaign opened, our army had been in- creased to thirty-four by two volunteers. This time we found ourselves under the leadership of General fMisslt Motley, second only to Robert E. Lee. We have been very successful thus far, although in the Battle of Matrimony, Dan Cupid succeeded in picking off two of our very bravest men. We now have veterans, who are very different from our original raw recruits. We believe that with the wonderful strat- egy of our leader and the hard fighting of our men, we will be as successful in our future campaigns as we have been in the past. Then will we be able to say with Caesar, We came, we sawg we conquered I l32l , if Qff j,1 5, ., - ,f 1 ' A A I , fLg1 f ,fl 4 f Q K 24' 1 C ' 4i f , f' f A 'ff 4 -. ,f ,ffA' f ' f, X ' 'fb fy! ,f LZ 1 M, ,f , ' X' ff ff A ff-I ff' fy V' 3 ,X 1' ' f fy' ,' 4 , K, l,,, . , AAV, X, Y, ,flL!6,', ,ff'i' Vvny 'J fl X 1'f!Q,, ff X! ff !!,,f ff f ,'l 7 X' V2 1 'f I N A'fA 455 W T f- 2- 2 QQXZVTL .MQQW WNV L r Q ' Z -W ',,f'QM- Q fx, f N? wf rf A i rn vv, X us 5 , LA I 1 , , WI ' 2' 'kms 'caan wh- iQ 71 'M b m 'SOPHUNORES' r 0 'E 7? q??+V iw: 1 J ago if if fy -sn! We were very sorry to lose our good team of last year, but we felt that we had some good material to take their places. We began to work immediately, and by the help of our coach and splendid teamwork we won twelve games out of fifteen. Our forwards have played a good game the whole year, as can be seen 'oy our scores. Elma Milam was the spar player, ably assisted by Catherine Peers. We certainly will miss Elma next year, as she has basketball ability that is not often shown by high school girls. Although Catherine is only a freshman, she has made the team easily. Their teamwork is very notice- able by opponents as well as spectators. Jumping center is a very im- portant position in the girls' team, so Christine Sweeney has been a valu- able asset in securing the tip-off against her opponents. We could not commend Ruth Fussell enough in her playing. She was the quickest player on our team and never found an opponent who was a match for her. Guard is about the hardest place on the team. They win no applause, but get the blame when things go wrong. That Elinor Whitlock and Thelma Becker were two good guards is clearly shown by our opponents' low scores. These six and the three substitute girls working together shows by the score of 482 points to the opponents' 288. As the sun was slowly setting behind the horizon, we were assured that a good work had been completed. Heres wishinggood luck to the Verma team in the future years. -RUTH FUSSELI., Athletic Editor. l63l Hx .- ey 3x,1,,,l,xQF R ,j if 'ifif 1, 4, fl, Sgv.0.w1wf?ix:1k' X MF' Magi . 151,24 A?Ghjf? 1Lqfgif5'5 fgl' qlMf'j,f,Q17,g5I 'H , 1552+ffffii? :ffM51?iQ2avs+1. ., Qmfi2'f-g+1Ska: M1 rn D , -45 .Q f i 44 l L67J ,1 ..- ' . ..- X 111-un---' 1 1 . , v NNN, 1 1 . v , ,lf 1, ,J 1, W ,I1 1 1 1,, . 1 '11 '1 ' . 1 1-' ' I 11 , gn '11 11- U 1 ,...... 11,.,1., N W W 11 11 1111 L '1 I lftl' I I , I vw W! ,Www V X '10 ' -1 1'. 1 I' Iwlgm ' ffl A VI jfffull K 1 1,H'Lgp111 J 1' 11 ,,f'HH4Q 1 f' MA 'X JN rx '71T,p, t'yr 1 ' 1 1 1, f'1 4 1 I1 v 64' H A , 1 1 1 I r 1 P QU! I Social Events SENIOR CLASS SUPPER Aside from the many gay parties, we, the Senior Class, realized that we should have money in order to publish our Year-book. We gave a donation supper Which, with the hearty co-operation of the community, was very successful. We cleared over a hundred dollars on this. , JUNIOR-SENIOR PARTY Nearing the end of our happy senior year, the Juniors gave us a party at Malvern Hill, March 17th. We were invited to come to this historic spot to cook our supper over the camp fires as our forefathers did so many years ago. The Weather changed this plan for us so our vveinies were cooked indoorsg but this subtracted not at all from their taste. In spite of the fact that the rain kept many from attending, the old gang had a fine time. ALUMNI We are very proud of our active Alumni Association. They decided to buy a piano and placed it in the school so any teacher or pupil could make use of it when necessary. In order to raise money for this and other causes, they have given a series of parties and a play entitled O.K. These were both successful. COMMUNITY LEAGUE The Community League entertained the faculty at the beginning of the year by making them undergo certain examinations, such as the news- paper race.
