Betty Casteel Reporter ...... .......... M olly Farmer .,. W. ., aaa .jvhalory In the fall of 1936, forty-two pupils entered Van- lue School. under the watchful guidance of Miss Dorothy Shull. The first six years seemed rather uneventful to many of us, but as we entered Iunior High School in 1942, school life seemed to pass more quickly. When we were in the eighth grade. we worked hard to prepare for our Eighth Grade Test. Our class ranked high in Hancock County. Our past four years have been happy and mem- orable ones. Twenty-six students filed into the Freshmen rank, in September, 1944, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Hutson. We chose as our class President: Iohn Norris: Vice President, Molly Farmer: Secre- tary-Treasurer, Betty Casteel: and Assistant Secre- tary-Treasurer, Iean Van Horn. We chose our class colors, red and white: class flower, red carnation: class motto, "Onward Ever, Backward Never." The next year we became Sophomores, being one step nearer the end of our journey as upper- classmen. Our class of twenty-four members elected class officers as follows: President, Marjorie Barber: Vice President, Norman Pratt: Secretary-Treasurer, Elmer Walter: Assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Irma Russell: and Sponsor. Mrs. Petennan. The next step upward placed us in the role of Iuniors. There were twenty-three of us with Mr. Henning as sponsor. The following officers were elected: President, Iohn Norris: Vice President, Norman Pratt: Secretary, Betty Casteel: and Trea- surer, Bonnie Crawford. The big event that year was our Junior play, "For Pete's Sake", with Miss Oman as our di- rector, given on April ll. On May 9, we gave the Seniors a real "send-off" by being their host at the annual Iunior-Senior banquet at the Elks. This climaxed a year's work. Eighteen of us entered the Senior Class in the term of 1947. Mr. Wiljamaa was chosen as our advisor: Norman Pratt, President: Herbert Hisner, Vice President: Irma Russell, Secretary: Betty Cas- teel, Treasurer: and Molly Farmer, Reporter. Our first major activity was the production of our Senior Play, "The Skeleton Wa1ks," under the direction of Miss Oman. Our second activity was making our yearbook a success. With the help of our teachers, and the leadership of our class officers, we have now reached the goal which we set for ourselves when we entered the first grade. O enior Cfdriri We, the Senior Class of Vanlue High School, located well within the city limits of Vanlue, County of Hancock, State of Ohio, and the United States of America, being of very sound mind, declare this to be our last will and testament. So I placed them both on a table and backed off a bit to admire them. The one, it seemed to me, al- most changed colors, so I picked it up and gently touched it, and more colors shone from it. Then I brushed over it gently with a cloth and from it a cloud filled the air: and from it popped a Genie. Speaking to me. he said what any Genie would, that I was its master and would be granted three wishes. Being greatly surprised, I decided I would take first a large limousine, that naturally being a good wish. Thinking very hard I asked, "Oh, Genie, could you tell me where my school mates are?" and Genie said, "You are granted three. That, Oh, Master, will be your second." So Genie sat down beside me and began it almost like a story. First there is Bonnie Crawford, a very dear friend of yours, she is living in Vanlue, your old home town. Dale and she are the owner of Dipert's Store, now called Deid.rick's Store. They are doing very well, Master. Then there is Betty Marquet, she was always very quiet in school, but since then she has gone to Toledo, Ohio, and had taken a beauty course. She lost most of her quietness and now has a shoppe of her own. Ed Arnett, Genie told me had become a barber, and had taken over the job as a barber in Vanlue. Grow- ing quite interested in this, I nudged Genie to tell me more. Ioan McRill had started to a school in Chicago, and had since then become married. and now is living in Chicago. Bureada Stone, also a close friend of yours, Master, is living here in Hollywood, too. She is a dress designer, and is designing a lot of dresses for Paramount Studios. Herbert Risner left Vanlue shortly after he gradu- ated and had started a lumber mill business in Portland. Oregon. He is now a husky man and weighs almost 250 lbs. He is a regular lumber- jack. Surprised very much at Herbert, Genie went on to tell me about Max Cole, who had become the sole owner of the Cole Packing Company. Max always was fond of packing houses. Iean Van Horn is ilving at Wharton now, and also is teach- ing there. I was not too surprised at this because she had had a romance in Wharton while she was still in High School. Genie told me about Nina Wohlgamuth, nickednamed "Wiggle Ears" in High School, who had started a Corporation called the "Wigg1e Ears Rabbit Costume Company," and her costumes had become a great treat at many a masquerade party. Elmer Walter had become a great violinist and was playing with a symphonic orchestra at Philadelphia. I didn't quite imagine Elmer doing this, Genie said he had made a mis- take in this and that Charles Gorsuch was a great violinist, and Elmer an English student at the Uni- versity of Pittsburgh. Richard Van Sant had be- come a singing star over the NBC network, and he can be heard on Saturday nights, over Your Hit Parade. Evidently he had become a second Frank Sinatra. Raymond Dirmeyer had settled down to a wife and children, because Genie said he could see Raymond seated at a dining table with four children seated around him. This amus- ing me very much, he went on to tell about Nor- man Faber, who was a specialist for designing goatees and beards for men. I had remembered when Norman took great pride with his moustache. Betty Casteel has been married for almost 20 years now, and the proud mother of three boys and one girl. Iust to think Betty almost 40 years old now. Norman Pratt, a fine athlete, had decided to make a career of football, so he started first at Notre Dame, taking over Iohnny Lujack's place at quar- terback, and he is now coaching at Harvard Uni- versity. Last but not least I will tell you about Irma Russell, who shortly after graduation had joined Ina Ray Hutton's band as pianist. She now has an orchestra of her own. Being very pleased with Genie, I started to thank him, but he was gone in an instant, leaving without granting me a third wish. I was even more startled when I dropped the vase and lVIr. Warner himself came up to me, and I knew I was in for it. Oh, Genie, if I could have another wish now! -by Molly Farmer. uniorzi I9 9 6.144 icera I cl P tt David Bri ht, Marjorie Crew, Rose Bechtel From left to right: Raymon ra , g Ronald Nye. Cameras flood the school and everyone is warned to "smile for the Seniors, because everybody is getting all the snapshots they can while the sun shines. Iokes are collected, activities are written, Senior pictures and extra activity shots are taken by the studio. All written material is collected, typed, proof read, and typed again. The advertising committee starts to work. They go from door to door, sometimes even have a few doors slammed in their faces. The money collected from the ads plays the biggest part in paying for the annual. The covers are selected and ordered. Subscriptions for the annuals begin, and the Seniors always hope to sell more than any previous year. The deadline is set for all material to be ready for the engravers and the printers. The rest is up to them. Before graduation, all our work and effort is sent back to us, all bound up in a padded cover. Everyone in the Senior Class has had a big job to fulfill. They have done it well, and we hope that our 1948 Scarlet and Gray to be one of the best ever published at Vanlue High School. Thus an annual is born! 34 lmer Walter Most of us think the school paper is something that is just thrown together, but it really consists of the cooperation cmd work of many sudents. Special reporters must be selected. They are students who write the articles concerning future activities that are to take place or about events that have already taken place. Each class or organization has a reporter who is respon- sible for the news of that particular group. These reporters have no easy job and often need encouragement and frequent reminders to " et th ' g e news in on time." The art editors must select suitable illustrations, draw them to correct size, and trace them on the carbon. The material is collected b the editor d t ll b y an mus a e proof read and arranged before it is ready for the typists. The typists type it on paper first so extra spaces may be added to get the right margin to come out even. Then the material is typed on the ditto carbon. Now the mimeographers take over the job and try to get 225 good clear copies well placed on the paper. Then the paper is stapled and at last is ready to be distributed to all the rooms to be sold. Elaine Blair, her lawyer-fiance, Bill Clayton, her mother, Mrs. Madge Embrey, a friend, Anne Rowell, Bobby and Kinks all go to see what Elaine had inherited. But to their surprise upon arrival the house is already occupied by a mysterious physician, Dr. Fersig, his housekeeper, Mrs. Hubbard. and her deaf and dumb son, Ollie. They all say the old house is worthless except Dr. Fersig and Elaine who know that a large sum of money is hidden somewhere in the house. Elaine and all the rest that had come with her were going back to the city for the night when they discovered the bridge between the island andthe mainland had been blown up. They had to stay at the house that night. A skeleton walked through the house and Elaine disappears. A strange woman, Mrs. Donahue, who is crazy, said she saw a woman tied and gagged upstairs. Bill goes to Elaine's rescue. Elaine goes to the fireplace and shows Bill where the money is hidden. Dr. Fersig grabs the money and runs for the door when Mrs. Hubbard, who is really lack Dow. and Ollie, Iack's wife, stopped him at the door. lack Dow, the famous detective, took Dr. Fersig with him back to the city. 36 unior may Rose Bechtel ........ Unless Dr. Wylie Angell, widower and absent minded college professor finds a step-mother for his three wild harum-scarums before his approach- ing fourteenth birthday, his eccentric old uncle, Zebediah Peabody, swears he'll disinherit him. Each "Angell Bratt' declares his own favorite for pap's new wife. Pat, seventeen, nominates her dra- matic teacher ,the stagey Mrs. Venetia Van Arlen. Billy, thirteen, a camera fiend, favors the Candid Camera Club chaperon, Miss Winnie Oliphant, whom Dodo calls "Miss Winnie Elephant" because she is so fat. Dodo, eleven, prefers Miss Twila Twitchell ,a librarian. Poor cousin Ruth Alden, the Angell's housekeeper and door-mat, is in love with Dr. Angell but she is "mousie" and unattractive: TOP ROW: R she is made to realize she is out. The three pros- pective step-mothers proceed to quarrel over the professor, Dr. Angell, who keeps a number of his pet lizards in cages-which all but frighten Hy- drangea and Epidemic, the two Negro servants, into fits! Grandma Grimes and Uncle Zeb dceide to burlesque Venetia and her lisping son, Orley and really cause a riot. Dr. Angell absent-minded- ly gets himself engaged to all three of his chil- dren's favorites. Then Venetia, Twila, and Winnie show their true characters by mistreating the chil- dren. The "Angell Brats" determine to get rid of these three harridens by the most drastic means possible. The would-be step mothers are finally vanquished-Ruth is transformed into loveliness by the aid of new clothes-Don gets his girl and Wylie a wife, who pleases all concerned. ose Bechtel, Bonnie Ward, Marjorie Crew Norma Thomas Margaret Roberts Patricia Haines Doroth Cook Reita H . . . , y , en- dricks, Miss Oman.
