DEAN FRANKLIN C. PASCHAL Dean of College of Arfs and Science I' R X 1 i,.., ARTS AND SCIENCE The University has indeed felt the absence, during part of the current year, of Dean Franklin C. Paschal, of the College of Arts and Sciences, who has been on leave be- cause of illness. The College misses the iron grip on its administrative affairs which Dean Paschal was wont to maintain. Among many of the students who have tried to get their cuts excused, Dean Paschal is regarded as being hard-boiled. However, it is rumored that in several instances he has revealed an unsuspected softer side of his nature by ex- cusing absences which were occasioned by affairs of the heart. At any rate, we may express, on behalf of the University, the sincerewish and hope that Dean Paschal will soon be recovered completely, and will be back at the helm when the fall session opens. AT VANDERBILT DEAN FRED J. LEWIS Dean of School of Engineering SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING For some years now Professor Fred Lewis has been one of the most popular and able professors in the En- gineering School, so it was but natural that, upon the death of Dean Schuerman, he should have been selected as Dean. A very hard worker and an excellent teacher, Dean Lewis has proved to be equally at home in his new position. He is quite popular with the Engineering students in spite of the fact that he lceeps their noses to the grindstone, for they lcnow that he is hard but fair, and that he worlcs even harder himself than he would have them work. It is certain that there will be no decline in the scholastic standing of the Engineering School under Dean Lewis, and the Uimiversity is fortunate in having a man of his ability on hand to talce over the position of Dean. 0 PAGE 25 0 IJX1. DEAN CDF MEN One of the most popular administrative officers of the University is Dean Sarratt. He is a believer in the old policy of the iron hand in the silken glove, and by seeking voluntary co-operation of the student body before resorting to disciplinary measures, he retains the respect and friend- ship of the students, and at the same time maintains a high standard of personal conduct among them. Possessed of a genuine sympathy for, and interest in, the affairs of the students, Dean Sarratt is regarded by them as a real friend and adviser. He is always ready and willing to offer his advice and his aid to any student who needs a friendly hand, or whose problems have become too great to bear by himself. DEAN CHARLES M. SARRATT Dean of Men WITH THE DEANS DEAN OF WCMEN One of the busy offices in College Hall is that of Dean Ada Belle Stapleton, whose many friends among the stu- dents, and not only among the co-eds, are in the habit of dropping in there to pay a visit to the Lady Dean. Dean Stapleton is a vigorous supporter of the rights of women students, and has done much during the time she has been at Vanderbilt to improve the status of co-eds on the campus. At the same time she stands firm in her insist- ence on all the womanly virtues, and her objective at all times is to have the Vanderbilt Women students represent the highest and finest type of womanhood. In addition to carrying on her duties as Dean of Women, Dean Stapleton is a popular member of the English de- partment of the University, and her classes find a wide appeal among the students of English Literature. 0 PAGE 24 0 DEAN ADA BELLE STAPLETON Dean of Women

sol-soot oF RELIGION Dr. George B. Winton, Dean of the School of Religion, is one of the most likeable members of the entire faculty of Vanderbilt University. Having behind him a wide ex- perience in the practical affairs of life, Dr. Winton has acquired a broad human sympathy which makes him re- spected and beloved by all the students under him. His work is characterized by a real interest in the subject he has in hand, and by an earnest eifort to help the student along the difficult path of knowledge. He has shown himself a capable leader by ably directing the affairs of the School of Religion, and under his leader- ship that School has been operating smoothly and function- ing quite normally in spite of the loss of Wesley Hall last year. WITH THE DEA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE One of the leading factors in the growth and develop- ment of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine in recent years has been the fine work of Dean W. S. Leathers of that School. The School of Medicine is one of the largest and most important departments in the University, and this means that there is a large responsibility placed on the shoulders of Dean Leathers to keep things running smoothly in that branch of the University. He has proved more than capable of bearing this responsibility, and due to his untiring efforts in part, the Vanderbilt School of Medicine has a line reputation among the medical men of the South, and of the nation. 0 IPAGE 26 0 DEAN GEORGE B.
