Two Magnanimous Gifts TVIRS. G. M. NEELY,S GIFT or SIO0,000 ASSURES AUDITORIUM FOR MER'IORIAL HALL Q, , 'S HE authorities of Vanderbilt University and the directors of the Alumni'Association, on September 30, announced that Mrs. G. M. Neely, of Nashville, has put at the disposal if of the university Sroopoo for the purpose of building an auditorium in connection with Alumni Memorial Hall. This gift will provide a new assembly hall 'to take the A ' place of the present chapel, and the Trustees have already voted to call it the George Mitchell Neely Auditorium. For several years the alumni have been' looking forward to the erection of Memorial Hall, but it has been impossible to do so until all subscriptions are collected. The last payments fell due July 1, 1922, and brought the total amount available up to the sum of S18o,ooo. Additional col- lections yet to be made and promised should increase this sum to S200,000. While a building costing this amount would provide suitable facilities for alumni oflices, student gatherings, whether social, business or religious, and for other similar university interests, it was impossible to go further and plan for the construction of a much-needed auditorium for great university gatherings. In this dilemma Mrs. Neely has generously solved the problem for the university and the alumni. The news of her generous act will be received with enthusiasm wherever Vanderbilt alumni get together. The new building will bear the name of Alumni Memorial Hall and George Mitchell Neely Auditorium. It is in reality two buildings contained in one but the two parts of the complete building are closely allied in purpose and may properly he joined together. The architect is already at work making plans for the building. As soon as these 'are finished work will begin. There will be no further delay. The new auditorium will be a worthy monument to Mr. Neely, who was for so 'many years intimately connected with Vanderbilt University. He was a member of the Board of Trust, Treasurer of the university and a member of the executive committee. He gave his time without stint to this great institution, and his memory will now be enshrined in the physical plan of the university. The trustees and ofiicers of the university rejoice in this fact quite as much as in the speedy erection of a greatly needed building. The fact that Alumni Memorial Hall will now become a reality, and that very soon, will be welcome news to alumni all over the world, who have given of their means to see the erection of the building. The hall will mean that forever the memory of the more than 2,500 Vanderbilt men who served in the World VVar and particularly those who gave their lives in the service will be closely linked with the future history of the institution, and that the heritage which comes to Vanderbilt from their unselfish service will form a part of the traditions of future students.
