I 1--W, f N f fx -0T 'l'-Ex J af' WE Senior Academic History in the Dark Ages, before reform in the way of military rule and emancipation of women had hit the campus, the Class of '19 arrived on the scene, a hundred and fifty strong. Of those who have success- H ' fully survived twelve exams, as many mid-terms, to say nothing of Germans, submarines, and chapel, only thirty-two remain. But those thirty-two combine in themselves all the virtues possible for one Senior Class. Taken all in all, they run the university in its every department. According to the new order of things the co-eds will come first, for the Class of '19 created the ques- tionable precedent of turning over the management of the university, including everything from Chance on up to the man who runs the dog wagon, to the co-eds. Once the gentle sex tasted power it was a difficult, if not impossible, task to make them return to womanis true sphereg and heaven only knows what will be their effect on classes to be. Pessimistic souls prophesy a time when Chance himself will be superceded by a Chancess and the small remaining masculine contingent relegated to the north-east section of chapel to give place to the ladies. C The new importance of the co-eds in university affairs will be readily seen in noting the part their leading mem- bers have played in advising the Board of Trustees as to what to do with the university and otherwise operating its man- agement. The Y. W. C. A., that organization of first importance in co-ed circles from the point of encouraging extem- poraneous speaking, is run and operated on a profit-sharing basis by Margaret Ransom. The benefactor of this system is traveling delegate and publicity agent, Marjorie Shapard. Marjorie also came in for her share of the bossing in the pro- duction of Stunt Night. To enumerate all the achievements of the co-eds would be to produce a feminine Who's Who and not a Commo- dore. The Scribblers Club is engineered by Amine Fletcherg enough cold kale to put Vanderbilt on the map was extracted from students by other co-eds of the class in the United Wa Work drive: and still other members managed in various ways to hold the Vanderbilt line against the attacks of S. A. T. C. and flu until returning war heroes appeared on the scene to take up the reigns of government. A short account of the method of said heroes will make it apparent that the senior virtue of seeming important and letting the other fellow do the work is by no means confined to the co-eds. Harry Duncan returned to his Alma Mater in the uniform of a sixty-hour Lieutenant on the morning of January Z. In another twenty-four hours he had himself elected Chairman of the Commodore Board, President of Student Council, President of the Y. M. C. A., and had bluffed Cocky Sanborn into thinking he was highbrow enough to pass Philosophy 3. Other returning worthies ran him a close second. Bill Sloan lost no time in getting the Pharmacy Department into his reins, and crooks the University into giving him two degrees in the same year for twice as much loafing as any other mem- ber of the class could do. ' The achievements of many members of Vanderbiltis most illustrious class can not be here recorded. The best infor- mation on the excellencies of Cat Frierson, Ridley Wills, Kelley Blands, Nix McGaughey and others could be given only by their Kamerads on the l-lindenburg Line. The only difficulty in obtaining it is the temperature of the region in which it is now likely to be found. But enough has been said to convince any unprejudiced reader that with the departure of the Class of 'l9 the best talent of V. U. leaves her halls. Classes of the past have achieved excellencies, but they have reached their culmination in the Class of ,l9g classes of the future may try to imitate its greatness, but such an attempt is vanitv. ln fact, to be ouite frank, the height of Vanderbilt's glory, the supreme product of her educational svstem, is to be found in the Class of 'l9.
