On thatfdate, at a meeting of the Board of Trust, Chancellor james Hampton Kirkland announced ' Y that seven hundred thousand dollars had been offered to the University, on the sole condition that the three hundred thousand dollars necessary to make up a million be raised by the University itself. The gentlemen of the Board of Trust immediately made themselves responsible for one hundred thousand dollars of the amount, and the fight was on. Since that time, and up to the time of going to press, the Endowment Fund has remained the big topic of conversation in the University. It would take pages to relate the varied means already resorted to by the students to do their bit in rais- ing the money required. Even so there has been some doubt as to Whether the stu- dents realize the gravity of the situation, that this is Vanderbilt's last chance for greatness, that if this opportunity be lost, with it will go the University as every Vanderbilt man would like to see her. It is, perhaps, too soon to tell whether Feb- ruary the Fifth will be remembered with shame or pride. But Vanderbilt men have never quit, Let us look back with pride! ,, ,, , ,, MMUDOPE
