W! sive science, it is timely, in View of recent events, to consider Vanderbiltis Medica-l Department at it stands Pg' to-day. Situated in the center of a beautiful campus that covers an area of sixteen acres, stands the mag- jjh nificent stone structure, a veritable monument of great things there are, and are to be, swathed in the somber N gray of dignity and bearing in her every feature the lineaments of medical science. Like wisdom, she calls to the sons of men, H Hear, for I will speak of excellent things, Counsel is mineg and sound wisdom, I am understandingg I have strengthf' This department has as instructors a large number of full-time men, that devote their entire attention to teaching, and several scores of Nashville's most prominent physicians and surgeons that take part in the curriculum of lectures and clinics. The City Hospital, which is located only a few .blocks away, affords great opportunity for the stu- dents to attend clinics and bedside work there, that permission being granted them. The Vanderbilt Hospital accommo- dates sixty patients, and also has free dispensary, likewise City Hospital. The number of patients that call for treatment are in the thousands, the students deriving the benefit of all. The Galloway Memorial Hospital, an uncompleted building, situated on the campus with the medical building, when completed will have accommodations for 500, not to mention the enormous number that will attend as out patients. This institution will be under the supervision of Vanderbilt Medical Department, and in that way prove of inestimable value to the attending students, as they will have access to the clinics held there. Mr. Carnegie has recently donated 6l5l,0O0,000 to Vanderbilt Medical Department, S800,000 to be used as an endowment and s200,000 for the immediate construction of a modern laboratory building, also to be erected on the campus. This building, which will soon be under construction, will have the most modern equipment, this being purely a laboratory building, chemical, anatomical, histological, pathological, physiological, and bacteriological. With these most modern appliances, most able in structure, Mr. Carnegie's million, with the honor of ranking A -,L-, second to none, higher entrance requirements, illimitable field, plenty of ambition, plenty of material, the department will surmount every obstacle and tal-ce its stand on the highest pinnacle of medical and surgical accomplishment.
