l D l 5 Guide to West Campus Page seventeen INTRODUCTION gf ITUATED as it is, on 5 the city's western bor- 'P? i? der, the West Campus offers to tourists attrac- tions equalled nowhere else in the world. The scenery is beauty itself. The air is healthy, though indolent, especially in winter. On clear days one can see over ninety-three million miles-all the Way to the sun. At night, the scene is made beautiful by countless electric lights, which go off and on, and give an aes- thetic lire-flyfeffect. Picturesque costumes are worn by the peas- ants-bath robes, palm beach suits and green caps. There are many and 'enthusiastic games of skill, such as crap shooting, crack-loo, and beating down the book storey and of chance, as football, tennis, and cutting classes. An orderly recitation of the events of an ideal tour over this campus will now be set down, that the weary traveler may consult it when inspecting this garden spot of the world. THE FIRST SCENES. Enter the portals of the Uni- versity at Twenty-third Avenue, and get on the walk as soon as possible, or McE.Wen's Laundry wagon will run over you. Cn your right, that magnificent brick structure-no, not your left, your right-is the gymnasium, commonly called Jim. In it are kept many relics of the Dark Ages, such as water-tight shower- baths, co-ed rats, and Guy Den- ton. ' Keeping your eyes to the right, in the background you see the homes of the working men, West Side Row. There are six houses, each containing eight rooms. 6X8:54. Three of the rooms are inhabited. Let us proceed. Still on your right, back in some trees, you see a building that is occupied by Foxy Grand- pa McGill, the greatest musician on the campus-on a pianola. The noise you hear is the music. KISSAM I-IALL. Keeping straight on ahead, you pass Kissam Hall on your right and College Hall on your left. Look to the right. That little concrete do-funny is the saloon. Make a side trip and get a drink. You will note two brass plugs in the baseg step on one,-if it's

If the right plug has been stepped on, you will hear a slight gargling sound and in a short time, aqua pura will spurt out of the little hole in the apex. Put your mouth over the spurt and spray your throat out with the cityis bleaching powder solution. Kissam Hall is the dormitory. It has been eulogized in song and story-the home of Democracy. Besides Democracy, the follow- ing also inhabit it: Robert, Pat, John C., the Captain of the Red Head Club, Shylock, roaches, ants, and the Vanderbilt Press- ing Club. It is very sanitary, being soaked in carbolic acid once a week. ln the basement is the dining room. If it is near 12:30, or 6 P.X., you may en- ter. Follow the crowd. Enter- ing from the South end, pass twenty empty tables. Don't mis- take full ,tables for empty ones. The full tables have light gray napery upon them. Take off your hat. Put it in your pocket, or sit on it. Eat, if you are still hungry. When you have all you want, pay the head waiter 25C and go to the fountain and wash the taste out of your mouth. Then you might enter the Un- ion Room, at the South of the dining room, and smoke a cigar. The Vanderbilt Union is a member of the American Fede- ration of Non-Laborers. The room is headquarters. Sit down, play the piano, or read the funny papers, such as the Hustler, the Observer, and the Chilclrerfs Vis- itor. You will not likely be dis- turbed. If any one comes in, ask him if he's paid his dues, and he will leave. If you want to take a magazine away, help yourself. Now get back to the street, and continue in a southerly di- rection. On your right, the little hicky with the whirligig top is the Observatory. You cannot enter, as the key has been lost since l889. You are now at the p0- sition marked A on the map. WEsLEY HALL To your left and on ahead, you can make out Wesley Hall. Enter the door at B. Borrow some matches before you enter, as it is dark inside. Make your way down the hall and ask some one where the pool room is- leave by the front door, and don't hurry down the steps, for you might fall and break your neck. Now stop at C and ad- mire the beauty of the architec- ture. Wesley Hall was erected in l880, the gift of Mr. W. H. Vanderbilt. It is inhabited by young men from all parts of the world, especially Tennessee and China. , From the point C, proceed rapidly to D, admiring as you go the shady trees. There are 4,265 trees on the campus, no two exactly alike. They are in- habited by 2,426,954 birds. There used to be 8,4l9,l32, but Cap. Alley, an old Confed-
