The fighters on the home front. We dedicate this yearbook to the farmers, the ones who furnish the man behind the gun with food to make him strong and healthy. We dedicate this yearbook to the war plant employees, who help every allied soldier to be the best equipped at the front. We dedicate this yearbook to the teacher, who is guaranteeing that every boy and girl has the education he or she requires to be a good soldier, sailor, marine, flyer. WAC, WAVE, or nurse. We dedicate this yearbook to the doctors and nurses who are doubling their efforts to help the wounded and sick, or teach others the marvels of medical SCICIICC. We dedicate this book to each student, who is preparing to be a good citizen and to take the reins handed down to them to steer and hold the world on a course of everlasting peace, happiness and decency. We dedicate this Otsquagan to every American doing his part. I , 'GE' N - ...., U t is f aff nf- The 1944 Otsquagun Tigififefzs On Tile Home fzonf "All out for Victory," is the slogan of the centralized district, Van Hornesville, Stark- ville, Paines Hollow, and Jordanville. Tuesday in the Van Hornesville Central School is a special day for the little tots in kinder- garten up to the studious seniors. Dimes and dollars were placed willingly on the teachers' desks for bonds and stamps. Every pay day in defense plants are bond days. Families are planning their budgets so that bonds are included in their needs. Last fall a paper drive was sponsored by the freshmen and supported by all pupils and members of the faculty. They canvassed through the communities, and the result was four tons of waste paper. "These are times that try men's souls," Thomas Paine said, and this also applies to the war-torn world of today. Insufficient help on the farms is serious. Alarms rang three-quar- ters of an hour earlier and classes were dismissed at l p.m. for five weeks this fall to aid the farmers in harvesting crops. The high school boys who would ordinarily have had to stay home to help on the farms, came for the half day session and were home in time to work all af- ternoon. During the summer vacation, both the boys and the girls worked at home on their own farms or helped out their friends. Many other pupils worked in defense plants or in business concerns where help was needed. If you looked in on VHS this year you would find the faculty loaded down with extra du- ties because of the shortage of teachers. Following a schedule, the teachers helped with the registration of war and gasoline ration books. The two teachers of the Jordanville school and a group from Van Hornesville were in charge of the registration in Jordanville. The Reverend Miles Watkins of the Jordanville-Paines Hollow parishes undertook the job of bus driver to help combat the labor shortage. In October VHS sponsored a War Chest Jamboree. when five-hundred dollars was raised in the Van Hornesville-Starkville area for the third war chest drive. This money was divided between the USO which provides recreation for men in the armed forces, and the various other relief societies. The health of our nation is more important today than ever before. To give the students more knowledge of this subject, health classes were organized. The boys met Tuesdays and Thursdays with Francis Duncombe, and the girls under the leadership of Miss Lois Bentley met Mondays and Wednesdays. A health movie for the combined classes was shown on Fridays. The VHS Highlights was mailed each week to 160 service boys all over the world. If we could drop in on a "mail call," we would probably see each boy receiving a letter from his Mom, one from his sweetheart, and the Highlights. He would read all the home town gossip, and then turn to the "Under the Colors" page. His eyes would scan the column and stop on a certain name and address. His face would light up in a smile. He has contacted one of his many lost friends, and he thinks back on the "good old days." These many contributions may seem small, but it's the cooperative spirit that counts. With everyone 'working for the same thing, with all their hearts, and with our boys giving all they've got, i'Victory will soon be ours." f rl: HY z i s r ' -Q , A I, Zi, , :, V f 4, W X, rg if ,I 2 Witt , y , 'I T S aff '. The Qclwal Pmmne This year the employees of the Van Hornesville Central School have the added attraction of having a Methodist minister as a bus driver. Burt Ackerman, the school janitor, has added to his usual duties the job of collecting and pressing the waste paper found in the school waste paper baskets, as well as tending the furnaces. Miss Dorothy Miller, the cafeteria cook, was busy watching the school food budget and mind- ing her P's and Q's in vitamins and calories to get a balanced noon meal for the grade and high school students. Mrs. Hazel Bronner, janitress. is working later than ever to keep the windows clean in the buildings and to keep clean towels available for the athletes of the school. This year, as well as last. Mrs. Bronner has sold ice cream to the students and faculty. Ice cream was purchased in bulk form, and Mrs. Bronner has dipped five and ten cent ice cream cones for those who wished them. Mrs. Mary Young, secretary to Principal Woodruff, has taken the added responsibility of typing and making copies of the problems and questions for the newly required state-wide health classes. Howard Leneker, VHS business manager, has for the past year driven the sta- tion wagon in the "Frog City" district, and has also been delivering the monthly pay checks to the faculty and other employees. Having done their required work for the upkeep of the school, the employees have also bought bonds and stamps and have served as blood donors. And so each school employee in his own small way, is furthering the war effort, building for a stronger, better tomorrow, and serving the world. all in one. 8 The 1944 Ofsquagan Glass of 'LM Dear Mrs. Wz'll1'ams: Last week we held the last class meeting of our school career, and it was a majority vote that we tell you the history behind our small but loyal class. Twelve years ago Jack Hemenway, Samuel Skandera, John Hubiak, Evelyn Gerhardt, and Eleanor Nabinger, entered the first grade, with a smile on their faces and mischief in their eyes. As the small country schools closed, others joined in on the fun. Then about two-thirds of our class came from Jordanville in the seventh grade. when our enthusiasm was the highest. When we were the happy-go-lucky, giggling freshmen, there were thirty-five of us under the supervision of Frederick Price. We felt very proud to elect our class officers for the first time as a high school unit. They were Derward Gifford, president: Virginia Sherman, vice- president: Betty Katovitch, secretary: and Nicholas Malincheck, treasurer. We launched our year's activities with a football dance in the fall. Our football boys were to be admitted free if they won their game. and sure enough, they did. Next was the Valentine dance. The high school put on a circus, which we took part in by sponsoring the "Fish Pond." Another thing that all freshmen looked forward to with Mr. Price, were his humorous stories of "Kyoti Bill." So every noon we possibly could, we'd gather together for a few min- utes of laughs with Mr. Price. A year later we were sophomores with some of our members gone, but new ones joining us. Officers were elected as we kept on our journey to complete our four years: Raymond Bay- nard, president: Nicholas Malincheck, vice-president: and Virginia Sherman, secretary-treas- urer. We had two dances that year also. One was the "Spring Hop," and the other was a Christmas dance with the freshmen. Another circus was sponsored and we took part as usual under our supervisor, Miss Marjorie Bumstead, the commercial teacher. We sponsored a Christmas dance again that year, with Leon Jeffers' orchestra. The tra- ditional junior prom was "The talk of the town" that year. Also a new creative literary mag- azine appeared, called the "VHS Variety." It won the highest, all-New York award with 197 out of a possible 200 on the rating scale. Were we proud! Class officers were John Herron, president: Virginia Sherman. vice-president: Betty Kat- ovitch, secretary, and Jack Hemenway, treasurer. Now as we have advanced to the seniors of Van Hornesville Central School our officers consist of Raymond Baynard, president: John Herron, vice-president: Eleanor Nabinger, secre- tary: and Helen Richvalsky, treasurer. Helen was also our DAR representative from this year's senior class. So far this year we have sponsored one dance, "Witches' Hall," a Hallowe'en dance, with Leon Jeffers' "Moderneers." Eighteen cooperative students came back in the fall to make up the 1944 graduating class. although only fourteen are with us now. Leland Collins and John Hubiak graduated in Jan- uary. Out of our freshman class of thirty-five, four have entered the service: Harold Wal- rath. Donald Yule, Edgar Shaut, and Glenn Young. We realize that we are graduating into a world of disaster and destruction, but we hope to do our best. We'll say good-bye to some of our senior friends, and work along beside others to keep the home fires burning. Respectfully yours, Eleanor Nabinger, Secretary of the Class of 1944. Woodruff William Stark Jack Hemenway Hockey Captain Football Captain Coach Wrestling Captain Track Captain The gpcfzgfs pw 'mm "All right boys, twice around the field." shouted Principal, alias Coach Robert Woodruff. The perspiring boys of the Van Hornesville Central School football squad started their tire- some gait around the football Held, which appeared much larger than ever before. Although the boys may not always enjoy the grueling calisthenics, or various running ex- ercises which they are required to do, it is to their utmost advantage. By these strenuous exer- cises, all their stiff joints and the muscles in their bodies are loosened up, which helps to pre- vent any serious injuries while playing football. Each individual is taught the art of tackling and blocking, important in both defensive and offensive playing. Split second timing and cooperation is required of each individual in order to make the desired play turn out successfully. A team's success depends greatly on plays that are properly functioned. At the other end of the field, sharp cracks could be heard ringing through the crisp autumn air. The girls' hockey team which was under the supervision of Miss Edna Austin were again exchanging blows with their hockey sticks. Many times a determined young lady exhibited a mighty swing at the swift little ball, but was soon disappointed when she realized that her ex- treme vitality did little to stop the oncoming ball. Although there were only a few hockey games scheduled, the girls remained victorious throughout the season. When outdoor sports were no longer possible, the familiar word "wrestle," and the thud of bodies striking the mat resounded as the VHS wrestling team shaped into condition and learned its holds. When a wrestler clashes with his opposing rival, he must use his knowledge, ability. and strength to outwit his determined rival. The present world conflict with its shortage of gasoline and tires, created a depression in the sports scope of this school. Teams which were to encounter other schools were transported to their engagements by cars driven by Principal Woodruff and other teachers, who were gen- erous in cooperating in the sports effort. The fact that all available manpower is required to serve our country, physical instructors are a great necessity to the armed forces. With the help of Principal Woodruff, who has taken the position of coaching, the students of VHS have had an opportunity to carry on some of the sports which are important in the morale of the school and the physical condition of future fighters. f . , 135 s s- F , JI 7, ,Moll-K ilk, p , All if aff . 18 The 1944 Otsquagan FOOTBALL Inf! lu rtghl, first l'tJLL'i.ltJllU Hcrron. The goufmaliam Depafzfmenf llntering the ninth year of publication, the VHS Highlights staff under the watchful eye of liditor .lack Hemenway, this year had a greater goal to attain than ever before. This group, again guided by Mrs. Adeline Woodruff, as their share of home-front duties sent the paper to alumni in service, sponsored the war bond drives in the school, backed the Red Cross. War Chest, and similar campaigns, and kept civilians and service men informed of community news and affairs. lfach week 350 copies were published by the 30 staff members. Helen Richvalsky was the managing editor, and Evelyn Gerhardt served as business manager. In order to raise money to send the paper to VHS service men, the staff sponsored the first social event of the year, a dance and card party in September. Letters from soldiers were given a page each week in the Highlights, and a list of the names and addresses of the men in service published every two months, kept not only friends at home but pals in uniform informed of each other's whereabouts. Good morale at home is important. too, and by carrying the usual news of the vicinity, featuring information con- cerning sons and friends on the war fronts, and through articles designed to help adjust people to wartime living, the paper has tried to encourage high morale. ln November the publication received the All-New York rating for the sixth consecutive year from the Empire State School Press Association. Early in the year a citation from the treasury department was awarded the staff for "distinguished services rendered in the behalf of the war savings program." Dedicated to the fighters on the home front and centered about the theme, "Serving the World," the Otsquugan was edited this year by William Stark. Betty Katovitch acted as business manager, and Mrs. Doris Williams and Mrs. Woodruff were advisers. The staff numbered approximately 25. The "VHS Variety," the annual creative magazine. appeared in the late spring. The ed' itor's post was filled by Marie Bennett. Assisted by the Z0 students on the staff, Mrs. Wil- liams and Mrs. Woodruff also supervised this publication. The i943 f'Variety" received the All-New York award at the same time as the Highlights. Thus, every week of the school the fighters on the home front are backing those on the bat- tle lines by doing their part willingly, with the knowledge that each day brings the victory nearer. 24 The 1944 Otsquagan OTSQUAGAN STAFF lull lo fldhl, lirsl rotuflflla l.ouise Collins. The IU-14 Ofsquagun 25 Tlfce Homema ing Depafzfmenf The homemaking classes contributed their bit for victory as they emphasized the importance of the home on the home front. The eighth grade girls who wanted to use their money for war stamps made Christmas presents from scraps and waste material for members of the family and small relations. Among these presents were small elephants, pillow cases, and baby jackets. The freshmen have renovated old clothes for themselves and their family. They also worked on articles for the Red Cross such as Afghans, knitted bags, and wash cloths. The sophomore class worked on nutrition. They have done canning for the cafeteria, pre- paring corn, beets, tomatoes, carrots, and greens. For Christmas they made assorted cookies and each girl gave her mother a box of them. They also have baked bread, rolls, and pies. The juniors have studied personality and how to act when they are with other people. They also discussed how to improve themselves and develop their personalities more fully. The seniors have worked on rationing and its values. They now know why we should not have more than our share. They also studied how the war has affected the home front, what people should do to keep American homes normal, and how to build morale. They have been working on food by using substitutes so they can preserve their ration stamps for items really needed. Thus in the Held of clothing, food, personal behavior. buying and rationing, our home- making girls are equipped for war service on the home front. 7-lze agfziculfufzal Depafzfmenf The agricultural department, under the direction of Wilbur Farnsworth, a graduate of Cornell University. has spent one of its busiest war years, in response to the call for more food. The Van Hornesville boys repaired farm implements at the school shop, and also helped overhaul tractors during the tractor repair course at the Van Horne Farm shop. This was directed by Harold Moyer, in charge of machinery and equipment for Van Horne Farms. Fed- eral funds were provided for instructor, tools, and equipment for a complete overhaul job of a tractor. To obtain maximum production and to find which cows to cull, the boys have been test- ing about seven hundred dairy cows. They also purchased purebred calves. The Future Farmers were hosts this year for the annual Achievement day of the Tri- county group, consisting of eight agricultural departments of neighboring schools. The Van Hornesville FFA team placed third, with individual winners as follows: Peter Wichowsky, first in potatoes, with Stanley Wichowsky third. Chester Janczk placed second in the seed con- test. The Van Hornesville Future Farmers placed "Good" in Group C in the state wide Dairy Herd Improvement Record contest, receiving an award of Sl4.77. Many FFA members had garden, potato, poultry, and dairy projects. The Van Hornesville FFA was honored in having two leaders among the officers of the Tri-county group. They were Samuel Skandera as president and Eugene Dunckel as sentry. Combating many shortages, the Van Hornesville FFA has done its utmost to keep the home front producing. 1 ,f , ,dx W - 'F A " , , V' ' F C' 5 V. Recently the Woodruff's dog, "Pudgy," got in the station wagon and ate Howard l.eneker's lunch-all but his orange. "If we had two more coaches, they could have a team all their own . . . and possibly a victory on the VHS football schedule. "The journalists will know better from now on than to invite the football players to their suppers . . . Four pounds of spaghetti were devoured in about five minutes .... When the lollypops were served, Prof., alias Coach, alias Mr. Woodruff, remarked: "This is the first time I ever had a cough drop on a stick." "It seems Mr. Schnell hasn't made Admiral yet. . . . During a test of throwing a rope and pulled, he came near to hitting the admiral .... We also won- der how he spent his six hours in the gallep for wiping his shoe on his pants. "What was Editor Hemenway trying to do Friday night-scare somebody? . . . He came through the window dressed as a ghost, and scared himself . . . He fell and thought he broke his leg . . . More fun and no people killed. "According to the freshmen, Helen Gosholok spends most of her time in social studies class winking at Mr. Price . . . quite social, but where do the studies come in? "Has anyone a spare pocket with a zipper that they can donate to Ray Baynard so he can keep Miller's ad from getting lost? . . . He had to stop at the garage to get another copy again last week. "Mr. Duncombe's cow knows there is a feed short- age and has found a solution .... Last week it got into "Prof" Woodruff's chicken coop and was found eating the chicken feed .... You don't suppose he'll h by Gosh" lay any eggs do you? . . . We must inquire from our ag teacher, "Professor" Farnsworth. "It seems that Aunt Catharine's house is quite over- run by mice .... The teachers living there are now becoming expert hunters .... Last week they caught mice as fast as they could empty the traps. "Why is it that Miss Bumstead can't concentrate on school work while the odor of baked beans from the cafeteria permeates the air? . . . If she were a man we'd think it brought to mind the thought of army life. "Golly! If any more of our faculty get married, we will be swamped trying to get the new names straightened out . . . Mrs. Williams seems to be pretty well memorized now, but Mrs. Render is still Miss Stewart to the majority of students. "Yes, we actually saw Burt Ackerman joining in the dancing games at the Ostrander party last Friday night . . . and enjoying himself, too . . . By the way. has Ward VanDeusen recovered from the beating Har- old Harter gave him in the "Swat Hitler" game staged bv the men? Did Jimmy Walrath wear his flashy suit coat and pants on account of the pictures being taken last Fri- day, or did he get home from the banquet Thursday night just in time to get on the bus? . . . Was Bill Stark catching flies in his mouth when the HIGH- LIGHTS picture was taken? "It seems that some of our faculty members don't realize there is a fuel shortage. . . . When driving some of the teachers to the dinner meeting at East Springfield, Mr. Farnsworth journeyed first to Cherry Valley. thinking the meeting as at that place.
