Captain, Pam Gooden says that they have practic- ed on every Tues. and Thurs. from 2:30-4:00 and have really worked towards their goals. The Sponsor Miss Cameron feels the squad is not yet perfect, but the best yet. Keep up the good work j.V. Sponsor; Miss Cameron 59 J.V. Row 2: Amy McKown, Lauri Trotter, Sharon Peitre. Not Pictured: Staci Nicolson, Juanda Kane. This years Falconettes have done their very best, even though there are only ten members on the squad. Over the summer they attended camp at Baker University in Baldwin, KS, and there they learned many routines and dances. They received ribbons rating excellent, outstan- ding, and superior. Their first performance was held at the Municipal auditorium on the night of December tenth. Many people gathered to watch. Although some spectators didn't agree with the ending results the Falconettes placed in fifth place. Better luck next time!! Row 1: Keisha Pitts, Michelle Wiliams. Row 2: Sherry Speake. Row 3: Dionne Nylund. Captain, Keisha Pitts leads the cheer. Freshmen Cheerleaders Promote Spirit Even though this is the freshman's first year at Van Horn they really made a good impression. At the first of the year the Falcon squad and the Freshman squad had to be combined and formed as one squad. Miss Cameron is very proud of this squad because they showed real good school spirit. Thanks Freshman squad for a job well done. 61 Freshman squad cheers the crowd on. Homecoming Queen Has Winning Smile This year's Homecoming theme was entitled American Beauties. The candidate represented their favorite states based upon the Miss America pageant. Miss Yuhas, our winner, represented Miss Texas. The assembly was one of the best seen in quite awhile with the highlights of the pageant being the announcement of Homecoming Queen during the dance. Congratulations Miss Yuhas! Throughout VanHorn's history, many clubs and organizations have come and gone, but never has one distinguished itself as did the Art Nouveau club of the 82-83 school year. The word club should be emphasized as this was a group of talented, ambitious students, and not a few individuals who like to have their pictures taken. Through activities including Christmas and Super Falc decora- tions, crime prevention and basketball banners, and a tour of the Nelson Art Gallery, members contributed more than their share by working during classes and after school. While at work, a sense of unity developed that quickly acquainted strangers with each other and gave old friends a new understanding of themselves. Art Nouveau attributes much of its success to Miss Perkins and Mr. Stout whose guidance and pa- tience prevailed as the artists ex- pressed themselves in unorthodox and perhaps bizarre ways. Because of their help and maybe a little push here and there, some members will continue to pursue an enriched life as the artist they wish to be. THE ROSE Some say love It is a river that Drowns the tender reed Some say love It is a razor that Leaves your soul to bleed Some say love It is a hunger An endless aching need I say love It is a flower And, you, it's only seed It's the heart afraid of breaking That never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking That never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken Who cannot seem to give And the soul afraid of dying That never learns to live When the night has been too Lonely And the road has been too Long And you think that love is only For the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter Far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed That with the sun's love In the spring Becomes THE ROSE ... Amanda McBroom 162 163 Youth for Christ The Van Horn Youth for Christ has been very active the past three years sponsoring hayrides, skating parties, lock- ins and many more exciting and enjoyable activities. The Bible quiz team also has been active competing against a number of area high schools in a monthly quiz match. Each meeting is fill- ed with songs, games, refreshments, and a speaker who shows how each person can have a daily Christian walk with the Lord living a peaceful and fulfilling life. Throughout the coming years the members hope to keep the club growing to become a great impact on Van Horn. Left to Right: Debbie Rigsby. This past summer three students from Van Horn attended a ten day leadership camp in the Lake of the Ozarks. The camp con- sisted of activities which encouraged and showed how the students could become better leaders both in school and other outside activities. Students from other areas such as Omaha, St. Louis, and the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma also attended the camp. The experience of meeting new friends and learning about leadership will long be remembered and put into action throughout the years to come. 165 Mr. Griffin 166 1983 Falcon Yearbook One of the highlights of the year for me comes when it's time to address you — the number one student body of all school in the Kansas City, MO area through our Falcon yearbook. It is always a pleasure to make a few remarks to you that I hope in some way, large or small, will be a source of incentive to each of you to continue to be the very best that you can be; for you to ap- proach experiences in your life with enthusiasm and accept with open-mindedness a variety of ap- proaches in your daily lives. I would hope that you will display a sense of per- sonal pride in having been a part of Van Florn; that you continue to strive toward achieving total self- intensity and toward accomplishments which may influence your lives in a positive way. I ask of you as well to be aware of cultural and ethnic differences and similarities that exist in our community, state, nation, and world in which we all must live. I recommend to those of you who will be graduating that you obtain and evaluate sources of information on careers and occupations — whether it be on colleges and universities or going into the world of work. After you have done this, enter and commit yourself to nothing less than achieving your goals. In closing my remarks to each of you in this, the twenty-eighth volume of the Van Horn Falcon, I would say to you, This: Assume responsibility for your personal behavior and self-direction. And whatever you undertake, demonstrate excellence in the quality of your workmanship. It has, again, been a true pleasure serving you as Principal of this great school - Home of the Falcons. I Stand for the Red and Gray David L. Griffin Principal If the students of Van Horn High School realized the respon- sibilities that our Vice-Principals assumed, they would ap- preciate and thank them for the effort to keep the school orderly. Much work is required to fulfill the obligations that our Vice-Principals have to our school as well as the student body. We give thanks to these people because they are the ones that help the school operate. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP.
