Prelude Selecting school colors, deciding on an emblem. and writing the school song were the big events of 1955 when classes first began at Van Horn. 1955 has a special significance with this year because it started the first four year cycle and 1959 completes xr. The members of the present graduating class were all freshmen then, and were first entering a new phase of their life called high school. They helped select red and grey as the school colors and the Van Horn family coat of arms, as the senior class ring symbol. The freshman boys out for football did their share of pulling weeds and lifting rocks so football practice could begin. A few freshmen played in Van Horn's first spring play, One Foot in Heaven. In 1956, these freshmen became sophomores and contributed a great deal to Van Horn's first variety show, VANTASIA, which has became an annual event at Van Horn. Two outstanding sopho- mores started their second year on the varsity basket- ball team, while other sophomores made their marks in track. Socially minded members of this second- year class entered the literary societies and others became members of the Spanish Club, Latin Club, Seamaids, and F.H.A. Moving up another year, these students became juniors. The junior year was perhaps filled with the most activity as it consisted of many different and unusual undertakings. The new juniors elected their own class officers, attended their first Prom, and enrolled in advanced math courses. A number of these delved into the journalism field while others learned how to act well their parts in dramatits. The journalism students put a new look on the PIONEER while the dramatics students shared in the production of a top-notch play The People Versus Maxine Lowe. Several junior boys helped comprise the roster of a football team that took a respectable fifth place in the Inrerscholastic League. Last fall these students finally became seniors and in a few days will be graduated. ln their last days at Van Horn they parked in the parking lot and witnessed the conversion of their beloved Stu- dent Lounge into classrooms, As each senior leaves Van Horn and departs, each in his separate way, he takes with him many wonderful memories. Yes, these memories which cannot be bought or sold, but are worth as much as pure gold, are in- valuable to each and every student. Fifteen years from now one of these 1959 graduates who is taking his four kids and dog out for a stroll in the park will run into one of his former classmates and they will reminisce about the unforgettable first four years' cycle at Van Horn and will think how this four year period and events within it formed a pattern or de- sign which influenced their lives immensely. They will think how these four years were ex- actly like those mosaics hanging in the halls, and they will be exactly right because that is what it essentially was. All of these events, which formed these irreplacable memories, carved a beautiful mo- saic in the life of each graduate. That is why we have chosen mosaic art as an idea of this yearbook, because it best exemplifies the first four year cycle lived at Van Horn High School.
