I'm Freddie Falcon. I have been a very active student at Van Horn, and for this reason I have been asked by the FALCON staff to be the host of our 1958 annual. You see, I know something about every person in this school. Although you can't see me, I have been in every class, attended all club meetings and am always at the sport events. Wcin't you join me now as we review this past year and recall for you these many memories. We will begin first with our advisers, our administration staff, and our faculty. The work of the administration is seen hy a very few of us. They keep our school running smoothly with their wise supervision and gen- uine Ieadership. Our faculty meets the edu- cational demand of the classrooms in addi- tion to giving of their free time in sponsoring our clubs and attending our school functions. Their guidance and tounselling have given us fine memories. Lets turn the page now and meet these advisers. THESE ARE Uv 7 ,x - :,..v': if sg-5 nt? .f,,...,,,. -, Rf MY Futow cLAssMAT.1:s Most of us are sorry to see this year come to a close, especially the seniors. Some of these leaders will be taking their place in the colleges and universities across the country while others will be going into the business world and some will become the future homemakers. They have done a wonderful job in holding the responsible positions in our clubs, Student Council, and classes. This leadership could not have been possible without the training they received as underclassmen. I think the juniors of this year will do just as well or maybe better when it becomes their turn. They are getting ready now to take over this responsibility. Sophomores, freshmen, and eighth graders are also playing a great part in the school spirit of Van Horn as loyal followers while learning the responsibilities of leadership which come in the junior and senior years. These are my fellow classmates .ind I .sm proud of them. The Student Council is the greatest single asset to our school. It is the hard working organization that helps promote a better relationship between students and the faculty in securing the needs of the entire student body. Under the fine leadership of Mr. Fields and Mr. Thompson, this year's organization has striven to complete the constitution, adopted a Christmas family, sponsored a success- ful mixer in which the football queen was crowned, given its support to the new parking area, started a much needed handbook that will be useful to future Falcons, and partici- pated in npny other activities. Yes, the Student Council is essentialto a highly rated school such as ours. D.: L 1 V If 1 l A ,' 1,4 Kappas worked extra hard this year to bring more honors to their society. By trying to achieve a better understanding and appreciation of literary work, they filled the main purpose of, the society. However, a Kappa works not only for literary advance- ment, but kindness, patience, and consideration which are a few of the ideals that they strive for during the year. The Kappa girls also have their share of fun. In the fall, a very successful rush party took place, and the Lit contest furnished a thrilling climax to the work and competition. Then, to complete the year properly, the farewell banquet was held. Act well your part. There all the honor lies in thc motto of the Thespian organization. Its purpose is to promote a living interest in dramatic activities. In order to become a member, a student must earn a minimum of ten points in some phase of speech or drama activities. Each point represents 10 hours of work. This year 21 new members were initiated. In January of this year, Thespians put on an assembly, How to Propose, which brought many laughs. Besides putting on assemblies and plays, Thespians also attended plays in other schools. Two contests in public speaking were open to them, the I Speak for Democrncyn and the American Legion Oratorical Contest, which members of Thespians entered and brought May I sit down? many honors to Van Horn. Their work also included an annual spring play, which really started spring off right. All in all, it was a very busy year for the Thcspians. You'rc prr-ny near, Sis. You ain'r so Club! Club! Club! WE IOIN T0 LEARN The main purpose of our club, Latinus Duces, was to culti- vante a better understanding of the Latin language. We feel that we have achieved this purpose with the help of our fine sponsor, Mrs. King. In the past year, we have made posters and Christmas cards, participated in Latin plays, studied the origin of Latin and also, contributed a basket of food to a needy family on Thanksgiving. Our club has been rewarded in many ways by achieving these goals. They have not only made us more enthusiastic about our club, but also very proud of such a worth-while organization. In our Spanish assembly, we tried to increase interest in the language, by showing you what fun it is. This year at Christmas we learned Christmas carols in Spanish. ABOUT IT As you can see I have been loaded down with a lot of things, but when it comes to the sport section I pride myself with the activities and honors that I have had the privilege of sharing with you Falcons. The fellows made a good showing both in basketball and football. They had me so excited at times that I practically flipped with those last minute wins. The track team won their honors with the greatest of ease but, of course, they spent many unseen hours in preparation. The girls sure did their part. Sportsday was a vic- torious win for those hepped-up girls and in addition to their own honors they supported the fellows with their cheers and attendance at each game. Of course you didn't see me but I was always in the middle of that Pep Club with my bright red sweater on and I made just about as much noise as all you Falcons' put together. This has been quite a year for us and the greatest honor, I believe, is the sportsmanship that each Falcon showed at every game regardless of the outcome. Van iv. Y. L J 532 . f t:Wy+' ' . What a graduation we had! Those seniors looked pretty sharp in their caps and gowns. The Baccalaureate service was inspiring for each of us, too Our spring play was quite a hit. It took a lot of work but it was worth it You may not have seen me but I was on the jury and had a good seat for all of the proceedings. Of course I didn't get to voice my opinion but they must have been reading my mind, be- cause the verdict was the same as mine. Then there was the Prom. We all had a good time that night. The girls were sure decked out in their gorgeous dresses and I think we fellows looked hepped-up in our suits and ties. The societies had quite an evening, too, at Lit night. They all worked hard :1ndI think they were all winners. Then, of course, the Inter-Society dance helped to make this year perfect. Well, :ill in all, we've had a swell year. AI've enjoyed sharing with you FALCONS the fun and thrills of this past year. We'll sure miss those seniors, but the rest of us have a real challenge to face next year as we try to. top this past year. 7 X 2, Q4:QlVv'9-J QW All Vhwf. ,fJ,L.,4f 59,54-1.4 MM W W A wwf, ,f1,,,A,,Uf , 151 JAG, Alla! xKdj4,MLM..A UULQ ,L ,L,,X,f 1Xi,J!
