Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1957 volume:

THE FALCON 1957 This is OUR school. It is more than a beautiful and modern structure of classrooms. It is OUR students who put life into this building; it is OUR teachers who pass on knowledge, acquired during their years of study, to these students; it is OUR admin- istration who coordinates the activities of both students and faculty into a smooth functioning high school. But above all these material ingredients is OUR intangible spirit of pride and school loyalty that touches with invisible fingers each one who enters our portal. We assume OUR responsibility to build traditions which shall be guideposts for those who will follow in OUR footsteps. We hope this edition of the 1957 Falcon will pro- vide you with many happy memories of this year of OUR life at Van Horn High School and will be both an inspiration and a challenge to strive always toward higher goals. 3 CONTENTS OUR ADMINISTRATION Mr. Griffith Faculty Staff OUR CLASSES Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Subfreshmen OUR SPORTS Boys’ Sports Girls' Sports OUR ORGANIZATION Student Government Societies Departmental Clubs School Features OUR ADMINISTRATION OUR PROBLEMS ARE THEIRS Van Horn students are guided, supervised, and improved through the efforts of the administrators. They are confronted with, and solve many problems in order to main- tain a smooth functioning high school. They arc the liaison between students and faculty. Mr. Madison Griffith came to Van Horn this year as Principal. Throughout the year he has been here he has shown a deep interest and understanding of every phase of school life, and thus has gained the admiration and respect of both the students and his co-workers. Mr. Edgar Curtis, our vice-principal has helped to guide our discipline through firmness, kindness, and understanding. Miss Helen Johnson, our counselor, has assisted students by helping them to better under- stand their personal problems, their abilities, aptitudes, and interests. Our faculty has worked hard to teach us those elements of service, scholarship, leader- ship, and character traits which will help make us successful and happy citizens. Besides regular classes each day, they sponsored clubs, societies, various other organizations, helped us with the school publications, activities and presentations. They emphasized that each student should assume a personal responsibility to help make this school func- tion smoothly and democratically. Mr. J. L. Laughlin presents our new principal, Mr. Madison Griffith. Mr. Edgar Curtis, vice-principal, is responsi- ble for students’ good citizenship as well as planning curriculum. 9 OUR LIBRARIANS: Mrs. Burg, Mrs. Janet Booth, Mrs. Roxicr, Miss Darlyn LaGrecc. OUR seniors received their first glimpse of the adult responsibilities awaiting them through participation in such activities as Business Education Day, College Day, Student City Hall Day, and through other various school functions. They are looking forward to a time when they will be recognized as adults. With faith in their own ability, OUR seniors are now ready to step into the world. OUR seniors will remember their classmates with whom they have worked and shared years of experience. They will remember class preparations, study hours—early and late— and, of course, grades. The early morning gab” sessions in the student lounge, mad dashes to the cafeteria, and each thrilling moment of athletic events will never be for- gotten. The special events will be the first to come to mind: the eager anticipation of opening nights, the joys and disappointments of lit night”, and the Prom, which has a special place in everyone's memory. Then came the last big events, baccalaureate ser- vices and finally—graduation! OUR seniors have taken their final step into the adult world. Sing we of our praises for the school most dear We will spread the glory of her victories far and near. FALCONS ACHIEVE NATIONAL HONOR Fifteen members of the senior class of 1957 were elected to the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. The object of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the develop- ment of character in students of Van Horn High School. This striving, in a sport, means self-discipline, training of the mind and body, development of individual character, and the realization that team spirit and team play are paramount, even to the point of subjugating one’s personal desires. 70 Ron One: Jack Hanes. Experience and confidence arc realized only through actual playing time. Although the team’s record of one win and seven losses has not been outstanding, we have proven ourselves worthy of our opponents. Excellent morale, good sportsmanship, and steady improve- ment throughout the year has, however by far overshadowed our losses. Row File: Bill Kauffmann, Jim Tucker, Jerry Jeffries. CROSS COUNTRY POPULAR WITH STUDENTS Of the track events in high school competition, the two mile cross country run is a very grueling trial for contestants. Also the event is popular with aud- iences. Our cross country team has done very well this year and boasts a five won, five lost, and one tied record. Its final accomplishment was to win fifth place in the city meet over a rugged course in Swope Park. The cross country team prepares to run at the sound of the gun. Jim Whipple and Kenneth Dewey arc victorious against Manual. 72 FALCONS LEAVE Van Horn cagers proved stiff competition for other league teams. A year’s good experience behind them, the team set out to show further skill and improve- ment on the court. Enthusiasm, desire to win and good support from the stands kept the season at a rousing peak of interest. Row One: W. B. Barnes, Gary Clark, Phil Clement. Ron Tuo: Larry Cordell. The same principles of good sportsmanship and greater skill apply; however, the competition is on an individual performance or on a team work basis. Our A-team trackmen have successfully upheld this goal and have shown much improvement in their personal abilities. Chuck Allen goes on to another victory. 75 1 Row One: Jack Hanes, Bob Henderson. Our girls are fortunate in their opportunity to par- ticipate in a well-rounded program. Not only are fundamentals taught, but further advancement of one’s skills in sports is encouraged. Good sportsman- ship, leadership, and a friendly spirit of competition are also important as agreed by Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Hensley, Mrs. Morris, and Miss Haize, our four in- structors. Our intramural program has proven very popular, with girls reporting in large numbers, for this after school activity. They then have a chance to compare their abilities with girls from all classes and to enjoy wholesome, relaxing recreation. 82 Linda Steinmeyer. This was a good sign for journalism at Van Horn,” stated D. R. Smith, adviser, because it isn’t often that a new school can win honors in journalism so early in its career.” Although only twelve staff members edited and published the Pioneer this year, the paper ranked high on a list of Kansas City high school newspapers. Norma Lowe and Cynthia Spangler, the only two second year students, were editor-in-chief and managing editor, re- spectively. The ten first semester stu- dents acted as reporters. Second semester Nancy Harlin became editor-in-chief. Other staff positions for second semester included Wanda Woo- dcll, managing editor; Leona Webb, ad- vertising manager; Donna Curry, first page editor; Bill Pcve, sports editor; Judy O’Dell, girls sports editor; Cynthia Spangler, assistant advertising manager; and Rosalie Spencer, public relations manager. The Falcon Staff has worked hard to assemble an all- school book. We hope we have pleased you—OUR student body. Gloria Hill, Administration and Index Editor; Paul Staufer, Typist and Coeditor of Organizations; Pat Murry, Sports Editor; Judy Klein, (.lass Editor; all worked together to complete another page to be sent to the printer. 98 Row Onr: Merilee Moses, Juanita Wilson, Laura Matson, Mary Burdick, Lewdlyn Ingalls, Janet Freeland. The Van Horn Concert Choir of sixty voices was quite busy in this, its second year. The Christmas Vespers and the Christmas assemblies, Victor Her- bert’s The Fortune Teller,” Fantasy in Sound,” and several other programs and assemblies were among the choir’s activities. The acquisition of robes and stoles meant a consid- erable sacrifice but a larger thrill to choir members. One of the year’s chief projects was the financing of this investment. The boys quartet, the girls trio, and the Choralaircs were selected from personnel of the choir. These vocal ensembles were busy to varying degrees as they sang to a variety of audiences. The spring season found the choir at the peak of its activity: an operetta in March, two programs in April, an all-city festival, and Fantasy in Sound” in May and the Baccalaureate services in June. In addition to the programs and hard work in class, there were many lighter moments. The annual fall picnic was adjudged to be a success, especially in light of the fact that none fell into Rock Creek. The party following The Fortune Teller” and the spring breakfast were equally abundant in fun and food. The choir cabinet was composed of Ronald Batch- elor, Kearney Pixler, Donna Myers, and Howard George. CONCERT CHOIR TRIO: Elaine Murry. Nancl Hardic. Par Murry. THERE'S FUN AND LEARNING FOR CHOIR MEMBERS OUR Girls Choir of forty-five voices once again proved to be a musical match for any comparable group in the city. The girls worked diligently to present programs of high caliber to a variety of audiences. Building a repertoire of both frivolous and serious numbers, the choir sang for assemblies, the Christmas Vespers, the Easter program, Fantasy in Sound,” and the all-city music festival. 101 THE GIRLS’ QUARTET: Evelyn May, Gail Benson, Shirley Maycock and Diana Sullivan. THE GIRLS’ SEXTET: Jane Dougherty, Billie Cary, Joyce Lockhart, Jean Myers, Beverly Phillips and Sally Jo Whisler. Aside from the associations enjoyed by girls through their contact from day to day, there was additional fun and relaxation to be found at several parties that were scheduled. A Hallowe'en party in full regalia, Christmas caroling, and the Senior Farewell were enthusiastically received by all. The spirit of the choir was apparent in everything the girls attempted. Hard work and cooperation accounted for the success the group enjoyed. The Girls’ trio, the sextet, and quartet were among the busiest ensembles to be found. Chosen from Girls’ Choir personnel, the groups represented our school well as they appeared before audiences. Partici- pation in Vantasia,” the Vespers, and the music con- tests rated high among their many accomplishments. THE GIRLS’ TRIO: Carrah Hendrix, Evelyn May, Gail Benson. 102 FROM SEPTEMBER TO Under the able direction of Mr. Wallace Fike, our band and orchestra were busy throughout the year furnishing us with music. During the football sea- son they accompanied us to the games and gave us music which added much to the enthusiasm of the crowd. Their music often set the keynote for our assemblies and other school functions. ORCHESTRA OFFICERS. Jeannette Gerber, Auiitant Manager; Herb Fuit , Librarian. Mary Jane Crews, Sfcretary-Treaiurer. INTO FIRST YEAR Early this year a jazz band was organized under the direction of Mr. Fike. Seven members worked dili- gently to acquire music that would be entertaining and different to the student of Van Horn. Appear- ing in Vantasia was the band’s first appearance be- fore the public. It played How Come You Do Me Like You Do?” Organized for the first time this year, the Boys Glee Club had an eventful past and there came good indications of a promising future. Practicing twice a week before school, the group readied itself for several programs which included Vantasia,” The Fortune Teller,” and Fantasy In Sound.” Since membership is open to all boys in high school, it is hoped that the group will grow with each passing year. Fifteen students in Van Horn wore a pin in the form of an artist’s palette to signify they were members of the Art Club, sponsored by Mrs. Lucile Jenkins. The purpose of the club is to cultivate the appreciation and knowledge of its members regarding their choice and expression of art. They were kept busy throughout the year making posters to adver- tise various school activities. They were behind the scenes” of every school show slapping paint on stage scenery. Christmas was made brighter with Yuletide decorations. Art Club members worked over time painting scenery for ''Vantasia.” Row One: Lynette Peck, Marcia Barrett. This was our club motto and it embodied the club spirit of Latinus Duces. Our maroon and white banner identified us. We met bi-monthly before school with our sponsor, Mrs. King. Learning Latin for everyday use was one of our club's main goals. In the year of 1956-57, we made posters, participated in Latin Plays and the language assembly, designed Christmas cards, and filled a basket for a needy family at Christmas. Each member is convinced that a knowledge of the Spanish language will bring about a bet- ter understanding of our Spanish speaking neighbors. ADIOS! HASTA LUEGO! Two pool, amigo! THEY SWIM FOR FUN Old members of the swim club make a formation by swimming to records. Sea Maids, organized in 195 5 are concerned with acquiring proficiency in swimming. They met bi-monthly with Mrs. Hensley as their sponsor. Two important achievements were learning synchronization by swimming to rec- ords and increasing their speed by participating in races. It affords pupils an opportunity to select the type of work in which they are most interested and, with the aid of a coordinator, secure train- ing employment in that work. Pupils spend approximately half of each day in school pur- suing high school courses, the other half day is devoted to on the job training. The work experience training is school supervised and a unit of credit is granted for it in addition to the unit of credit for one hour of satisfactory class work. The number of accidents among drivers who have taken this course is 50 per cent less than with drivers who have had no special training. Van Horn students are taught by Mr. Nevin Was- son to develop fundamental and correct skills, self- confidence and poise while at the wheel, a knowl- edge of road laws and local regulations, and above all, a desire to drive safely. They were students who represented extra-curricular activities in our school. Ed Guffey, as a rich Texan, entertained Paula Staufer, Mistress of Ceremonies. From early fall to late spring, students found plenty of activities to enter into. School began in a whirl of exciting events—Open House, Assemblies, and Foot- ball Games were mixed in with first class assign- ments. At Van Horn scholastic achievement is not the only phase of education. Extracurricular activi- ties are an important part of OUR educational pro- gram. Whether working on the newspaper, yearbook, participating in athletics, school shows, or assemblies we learn to cooperate and learn those elements of leadership which arc impossible to learn in a class room. OUR feature shots help us to recall memorable experiences. A cast of twenty enacted the story of a small town family involved in marriage and a business merger. Love Your Neigh- bor” played to the largest audience in the history of student productions at Van Horn. Audiences both nights thoroughly enjoyed the play and so did the actors and stage crews. The play was directed by Miss Nanabel Cassell, the dramatics instructor, and was judged a huge success by all who saw it. 127 ' rrrrrrrw Hah, a Captain of Hussars, ripe for picking.
