A DREAM COME TRUE The Von Morn Mansion, razed in 1952. • As early as 1929 the people of Inter-City planned lor a new high school. In that year the Inter-Citv Kiwanis Club selected a coin- mittee to present a petition to the Kansas Citv, M issouri, Board of Education. Community interest in the project was growing and the citizens were demanding adequate educa- tional facilities for Inter-City youth. In 1930, negotiations were made to pur- chase the corner of Van I lorn and W inner Roads as a site lor a new, modern structure, and for the next ten years civic organizations and individuals worked diligently lor their “dream.” I he Parent-Teacher Association promised support; an “Inter-City 1 Iigli Boosters C lub was organized to promote the construction of a high school. Clearing ground, 1953 World W ar 11 temporarily halted promotion of the “dream,” hut in 1944. near the end of the war, interest again stirred and by 1951 the school hoard placed the Inter-City high school on the urgently needed list. When the Inter-City District voted nearly fifty to one for a school levy, the proposed school was placed at the top of the urgent list. The razing of the Van I lorn mansion Construction, 1954 began in March, 1952, and plans were ap- proved for a school to accommodate 1,600 students at a cost of two and one-half million dollars. The school was completed in the summer of 1955. The school board selected the name Van I lorn I ligh School which was seen above the entrance as the first 1,100 students entered the sch x l on September 9, 1955. Von Horn High School, 1955
