In that year the Inter-Citv Kiwanis Club selected a coin- mittee to present a petition to the Kansas Citv, M issouri, Board of Education. Community interest in the project was growing and the citizens were demanding adequate educa- tional facilities for Inter-City youth. In 1930, negotiations were made to pur- chase the corner of Van I lorn and W inner Roads as a site lor a new, modern structure, and for the next ten years civic organizations and individuals worked diligently lor their “dream.” I he Parent-Teacher Association promised support; an “Inter-City 1 Iigli Boosters C lub was organized to promote the construction of a high school. I he participation of the United States in THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Mr. John M. Gregory, Mr. Homer C. Wadsworth, Mrs. Henry I. Eager, Mr. Amos L. Burks, Secretary; Mr. Roland B. When the Inter-City District voted nearly fifty to one for a school levy, the proposed school was placed at the top of the urgent list. The razing of the Van I lorn mansion Construction, 1954 began in March, 1952, and plans were ap- proved for a school to accommodate 1,600 students at a cost of two and one-half million dollars. The school was completed in the summer of 1955. The school board selected the name Van I lorn I ligh School which was seen above the entrance as the first 1,100 students entered the sch x l on September 9, 1955. After years oi waiting, planning and working the Inter-City community has a beautiful, magnificent, modem high school with every device to make teachers and students com- | fortable. and learning truly a pleasure Now our community, our School Board, the voters of Kansas City and students of other high schools are waiting to see what kind of a school Van Horn will become. Inter-City is a community of homes, thriving businesses, dedi- cated churches .and fine ele- mentary schools. It has furnished the Kansas City high schools, especially Northeast, with many outstanding leaders Many of Northeast's best students in vari- ous fields of endeavor lived in the Inter-City district The com- munity is one-hundred percent behind the school and already several groups are making plans to encourage pupils to make the most of their opportunities From the standpoint of the community. Van Horn should be a great school. We have a carefully selected faculty of forty well trained and experienced teachers, each de- termined to make the best pos- sible use of the modem teaching devices afforded in the new building. From the standpoint of the faculty. Van Horn should bo a superior school The voters of Kansas City and the Board of Education have surely shown their interest and from their standpoint, Van Horn should be a great school. Yet all of these factors w«h their great import cannot make Van Horn great They can only fill the grandstand with eager spectators. You students of Van Horn are the players. You must carry the ball. You have an un- usual opportunity. You need not follow traditions and precedents already established by those who have gone before you. and you will not be judged by some who have given your school a bad name, but you will set the pat- tern. you win establish the tradi- tions and you will determine tha reputation of your school. You can make Van Horn just another ordinary high school or you can make it a school known for its high scholarship, character build- ing. the development of a high type of aggressive citizenship athletics and good sportsmanship, music, public speaking, drama, art. and aciyfvement in the prac- tical arts. A high school in which every- one wants to learn, studies faith- fully and is present every day unless he is ill. a school where every student treats every other student and teacher according to the Golden Rule, a school in which students are clean minded, happy, cooperative, loyal and try- ing to do the right things would surely make that twenty-five year old dream a living culmination id hope and faith in you the student body of Van Horn. It is up to you! Will you make Van Horn a great school? —J. L Laughlin MR. LAUGHLIN In April Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin attended the C. O. I. banquet at Van Horn Cafeteria. Mr. Laughlin went to Jefferson City in March to hear Pat Sportsman win third place in the State American Legion Oratorical Contest. He posed for a photograph with Miss Cassell, Pat, Mrs. Sportsman and Mr. Sportsman. GUIDANCE Miss Helen Johnson counsels a student. • Miss Johnson, counselor, lias been a friend to the students at Van 1 lorn by providing educational and vocational information and helping students to understand their own abilities, aptitudes, and interests. This year, perhaps, her greatest contribution to Van I lorn was her assistance in the orientation of so many students to a new school. Mr. Curtis, vice-principal, has given able assistance to Mr. Laughlin, faculty and stu- dents. I le has gently, but firmly, enforced school regulations and Student Council rules. Ilis understanding of students has enabled him to contribute wise and friendly guidance to many. Mr. Edgar E. Curtis 16 Office Staff OFFICI STAFF Mr . The seniors had the distinction of helping to “Break 1 h rough to a new beginning. Directing the choice of the school name, ‘Falcon, and the school colors of red and gray, organizing a student council, selecting class rings, electing class officers, planning senior activities, ionning societies and de- partmental clubs were but a few of the many activities in which the seniors worked with the underclassmen to establish prece- dent lor other graduating classes of the luture. The Council sponsored mixers to help finance the student lounge, furnished deco- rations lor the Christmas season, approved the final selection of the school s name and colors, campaigned to keep the school grounds clean, promoted safety week, sponsored drives lor needy, and was host to the many visitors who came to see the new school. I welve editions of the Pioneer have been distributed this year. As managing editor, David I) kIc1 capably put out a memorable first paper which was distributed to all who attended the open house in October. At Christmas, an eight-page edition was printed in red and green. In May, the junior co- editors, Norma Lowe and Cynthia Spangler, honored the seniors with an eight-page paper containing special features such as the Senior will and prophecy. Also that week, eleven seniors were formally initiated as members of the highest ranking organization in high school, the National I lonor Society. On the evening of May 25, the three literary societies had their first Inter-Society Contest in the school auditorium. In addition, the Juniors received their senior rings that week. During the last week of May, the long- awaited moment arrived, the lirst annual. The Falcon, was delivered. I he beginning of June brought dismissal of seniors, the band concert, and Bacca- laureate on June 3. BASKETBALL • The Basketball season was filled with lots of action and enthusiasm. The record was not an accurate index to the spirit and teamwork of the Falcon team. The team always fought until the last second. Van 1 lorn s lack of height and experience was nullified by a drive which never (altered. SECOND TEAM Raw One . . . BASKETBALL Amonq the indispensable members of any athletic team are the managers. Hero are two of them—Basket- ball Manager Larry Osborn and Track Manager Kent Twyman. 95 • Under the advice and assistance of Coach Fields, Van I lorn’s track season opened when they participated in the Big Seven Indoor Meet. The Falcon’s team consisted of approximately forty boys from the seventh hour gym class. These boys were supple- mented by other gym classes. Van Horn’s track team showed great ability in athletic competition. The finish Jock Hanes Bob Bailey 96 J.rry Crem.r D«on. Chon.ellor DoU Christian • Van Horn’s track team made an excellent showing this year. The Falcon team was victor at three individual cross-country meets, one against Northeast in Budd Park and two against Southeast in Swope Park. The track team has done much to help establish our school’s reputation in competi- tive high school sports. CHEERLEADERS • Yea, Van I lorn in loud unison can al- ways bring a smile to the faces of Van I lorn’s first cheerleaders. In brilliant red and gray, these seven girls have done a good job of di- recting the cheers of Van I lorn crow ds. They have participated in other activities this year such as Pep assemblies, Pep Club meetings, and the All-Sports Mixer. Enjoying the yells almost as much as the girls themselves is Mrs. 1 lenslev, their sen- sor and advisor. The cheerleaders, with an enthusiastic crowd behind them, have shown to the other schools the real spirit with which Van I lorn played its games during this first year. At T.V. GIRLS’ SPORTS Volleyball • I he year’s activities in Girls’ Spirts con- sisted of basketball, volleyball, swimming, and badminton. This year hockey was omit- ted because of lack of equipment and a play- ing field. Softball and table tennis helped round out the year’s program. Modern Dancing, an unusual offering in a girls’ athletic program, develops coordination and alert minds. Moreover, Van 1 lorn is one of the more fortunate schools in the Kansas City area in offering archery. Intramural play is a significant part of the development of athletic skills and good sports- manship. Mrs. I lenslcy and Mrs. Morris have arranged many games to provide competition between the members of the various gym classes. Sportsday teams, chosen by Mrs. I lensley and Mrs. Morris, play girls teams from the other participating schools. These Spetsdays are the only way in which the girls are per- mitted to have interscholastic competition. 1 he Girls’ Sports program has been an im- petant part of Van I lorn this past year. 100 Tumbling Volleyball Sportsday Team Swimming Adviser SPORTSDAY • I lighlight of Girls S|x rts was Sportsday at Central on March 3.
