2 SUCCESS He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction. Mike Arterbury fought with knee injuries all season but never gave up. This shows just what kind of boys are on the team. They all have guts, and they had a memorable season. ALL DISTRICT Second Team: Jim Holloway honorable mention Mike Arterbury LADY PANTHERS The Varsity Girls' season was made up of fun, success, and excitement. Early in the season, they won three trophies in tournament action as they won consolation in the ’Frisco Tournament, third in the Whitewright Tournament, and second in the Leonard Holiday Tournament. The girls maintained an unblemished record of 14-0 in order to receive, without a doubt, the title of District Champs. They played Celina in Bi-District action, which was held in Denton, and again came out victorious, 87-53. However, they were defeated in Area Action and finished the season at 25-6. Van Alstyne Dances Are Moving .... 55 Texts! , people would exclaim, amazed when I told them I was going to America for a year as an exchange student. For most Australian this news would conjure up visions of a place either like the tumbleweed plains of John Wayne westerns, like the Eweing family's ranches of 'Dallas' or maybe something in between When I finally did arrive in Van Alstyne, I could see it wasn t at all like the traditional images of Texas. but neither can 1 describe my many impressions o Van Alstyne, and my stay, in a few short paragraphs. Van Alstyne, to an Australian city-lover, comes as something of a shock. At first nearly everyone seems to have a pick-up ' for as we say a 'utility ), a pair of western boors on their feet, a western hat on their head and absolutely everyone seems to live with an enormous buckle around their waist!! However, in time I became aware of a more realistic picture of Van Alstyne, a small country town where you still have the old stepped-up sidewalks, the weatherboard houses built when Van Alstyne was just beginning, and it is also a town where community’ feeling turns out to make a success; such occasions as the Fall Festii’al. Coming from a big city. I think it was this community feeling that struck me the most, as it was a new experience for me to see so many turn up to the Friday night football game, and the school play. School too was very different to what I was used to. Overall it seemed stricter. Although we have to ivear school uniforms and Jo formal state exams, to a lj and lazy 'Aussie ' school in Texas eemeJ stricter mainlyr because school hours were longer and more strictly monitored — you haw I1 hours more school, and ? an hour less time for lun h every day!!! There are many, many differences and similarities between Australia and Texas I found during my stay, but this would take much more room than is available to me. Instead I think it is more important to give my thank to everyone who welcomed me in Van Alstyne. and I sincerely hope that the exchange program continues.
