WW: VALPARISO HIGH SCHOOL Valpariso, Indiana 7 edCcatcaK This book is dedicated to you, Mary Sue Kreider, who dedicated every aspect of your own life to serving God. Mary Sue always radiated a warmth that was common to her own sparkling personality and glowing testimony. In high school, she participated in many student activities and also maintained an exceptionally high scholastic rating. Mary Sue was active in such organizations as Student Council, Valpost, Y-Teens and G.A.A. She was taken at an early age to be with her Lord; even so, Mary Sue ' s faithful testimony will live on and on in the hearts and memory of us, her friends. SufaeniHfatcUrit G. Warren Phillips has been the head of the Va Iparaiso school system for the past eleven years. He deserves a great deal of recognition for the outstanding way in which he has performed the many duties of his office. Not only is Mr. Phi I lips faced with managing the city school system, he is faced with the prob- lem of over-crowded schools due to the ever-in- creasing population. We are fortunate to have the very distinguished Mr. G. Warren Phillips as superintendent of Valparaiso city schools. Mr. Phillips received his A. B. from DePauw University and hisM. S. from Indiana University. ’Piitttifial Mr. Telle not only is the principal of VHS, but a man whom students admire and trust. He has a personal interest in all the students. Each day presents new problems to our principal, and it is up to him to determine the best possible so- lution . We think everyone will agree that Mr. Telle does his job with sincerity that cannot be sur- passed. We are very proud of our principal, Mr. King Telle . Mr. Telle received his A. B. from Hanover College and his M. S. from Indiana University. b SevieUwiei, xvid SducaticHi More recognition is due to these three prominent business men of Valparaiso, who play such an important part in the management of the school system. These men, Orval Burns, president; Reg Hildreth, secretary; Gus Marks, treas- urer, have carried out their duties very efficiently and we appreciate their efforts. Mrs. Peters, another new- comer, is a receptionist and sec- retary to Mr. Phillips. She also helps Mrs. Rickard and goes about her many duties in a pleasing manner. Grace Rickard, Mr. Phillip ' s very efficient secretary, has been with him for twenty-six years. She is always happy just helping others and we, teachers and stu- dents alike, are proud of her. Mrs. Price, a newcomer to V.H.S., became Mr. Tel I e ' s sec- retary last fall . She has adapted herself in a way that is admired by everyone and we are happy to welcome her to Valparaiso High School . 0 ? zccdty BUSH, CAROLYN Biology. Valparaiso University, A.B. The Vikes suffered heavy losses from graduation, and the 1954 squad was dominated by juniors . The experience gained by these boys will, of course, brighten the outlook next year . In compiling a 2 — 6 — 1 record, the Miller- men scored eighty points as their opponents ta I lied 160. Fumbles added to Valparaiso ' s woes along with injuries to lettermen Richard Waymire, Bob Daniel, Harold Hawes, and Larry Hofferth. As the record reflects, the Vikes were unable to consistently offset these disadvantages. The sparkling play of senior quarterback Tom Mc- Donald, junior Fred Doelling, leading scorer and ground gainer, and heads-up football of the line caused home-town fans hearts to jump. One of our coaching staff ' s toughest jobs will be that of filling the shoes of McDonald, who won three major letters as a Vike g r i d d e r . He was a top passer and took care of the place kicking duties as well as calling the plays. Tom, indeed, will be of value to any col lege and a great loss to the Green and White. As for the season, V. H. S. started out well with a 7 — 0 victory over Crown Point on Tom Mc- Donald ' s pass to end Bob Daniel. Unfortunately, however, the opening game did not seem to set a precedent for our gridders, as they dropped the next four contests by at least a two touchdown margin. A 0 — 0 tie with Hammond Clark in a tre- mendous rain and hail storm gave Vike supporters hopes for a strong finish. These hopes were soon gone, as the M i II e r me n fell to county rival. The improvement may have been due to the fast-break system which was used to a large extent this year. This system was onlyone of the many helpful aids given to the Vikings by our new coach, Mr. Sweet, who did an ad- mirable job coaching his first Viking squad. The Vikings, looking somewhat rusty in the beginning of the season, redeemed themselveswith a shocking end- of-the-season comeback, ending the season with 8 vic- tories and 13 losses. The team, featuring such boys as I.H.S.A.A. pole vault champion Ron Lines; Jim Brown, Ray Kuhrts, Dee Fry, and Gene Hamann, lost only one meet of their rough schedule, which included the ' 53 State Champs Gary Froebel. The Vikes also established thirteen new records which, no doubt, will stand for many years. Fry put the shot 49 ' 2 3 4 " ; Lines vaulted 12 ' 11 1 4 " ; Hamann took 4:39.4 to run a mile; and Kuhrts ripped off a ten flat for the hundred . As for seasonal play the Pifermen started the spring with a fifth-in the annual Indoor Meetat the University of Chicago. After coping their next five contests the boys met top-ranked Gary Froebel, who was taken in stride 68 1 2-60 1 2. In finishing the year Green and White reached their peak. They won the first track sec- tional ever won by V.H.S. Lines clears the bar. I The feats of V.H.S. athlete, Ron Lines, will be remembered, admired, and set as a goal in the minds of future participants In Viking sports for many years to come. Lines, a member of the class of ' 54, excelled in all sports, but his accomplishments under Coach Ken Pifer in track and field events as a pole vaulter were his most notable. Ron started vaulting even before he reached his teens, under the watchful eye of his brother, Roger, who once held the V.H.S. pole vault record. As the years went on, Ronnie ' s height went up. In ' 53 he broke the school record (Roger ' s), and before the season ended had conquered the 12 ' mark. In the following year, his final wearing of the Green and White, he repeatedly bettered his own marks — 12 ' 1 1 2 " ; then 12 ' 2 1 2 " , and finally 12 ' 6 5 8 " when he took a first in the sectional . After winning the regional, he climaxed his great career by tying for the state pole vault champion honors at Indiana- polis . 57 TOP ROW; Jim Harrington, Don Kyes, Bill Hendricks, John Oglesby, Mr. Pifer.
