I feel certain that this class will not be found wanting, but that each will make his contribution in furthering the cause of mankind. The philosophy that it is better to light one candle than curse the darkness should be a concept held by each member of the Class of 1960. To our teachers we leave the imposing mass of unusual and unverified information which may be found in our accumulated test papers. If any of the teachers wish to write an encyclopedia using this in- formation, they may do so without paying royalties to our heirs. We leave to the faculty the wads of gum which the seniors have deposited from time to time on the desks. They will doubtlessly find a good use for them. The good name and reputation of the Senior Class is left in good shape for the use of the Junior Class. We see that they are in need of a good reputation as they have none of their own. However, they are not to use it for the purpose of imposing upon the good nature of the teachers. If any scattered pieces of paper discarded by this class are found on the floors, they are to become the cherished property of the janitor who is to gather them up with reverent care. Writings which the class has placed in books belonging to the school are to be left for the earnest perusal of coming ignorant generations. The aims of the society are twofold: fly to establish and advance standards of excellence in all phases Of dramatic arts, and Q23 to create an active and intelligent interest in dramatic arts in the high schools. The fourteen students who were selected as charter members have all played major roles in at least two productions, Qualifications for members are decided on a point system. Ten points are required for membership qualification. One point represents approximately ten hours of work in play production. This Thespian troupe is an incentive to the many others who have participated and contributed to drama at Valley High. The vocal music department has become one of the most active at Valley. Under the direction of Keith Langdon, director since 1957, the program at Valley has really picked up steam. The center of vocal activities is the 108-voice mixed chorus. The chorus practices twice a week and due to lack of space, practice conditions have been UNUSUAL, Rehearsals have been held at Phenix, Clover Hills, and the First Christian Church. The first performance of the chorus was the Christmas Concert. This was presented complete with living tableaux. Other mixed chorus performances included a spring concert, and a full-fledged Broadway musical. Officers of the chorus for 1959-60 are: President, Judy Johnson, Secretary, Sharon Owen, and Li- brarians, Sue Young and Sam Figg. The Qaecial Noon Chorus was organized last fall with the goal of presenting a Christmas program for the Women's Club. They also sang for several other groups during the week preceding Christmas vacation. They did not disband after Christmas, but also gave a spring program. Special Chorus rehearsals were held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during noon hours. 77 GLEE ROW ONE, Left to RightgK, Ko110w,J, Anwyl, V, Ives, M, Townsend, J, Gilbert, C, Szerencse, T, Hilde- brand. In the opening game at Albia, the Blue Devils threw back Va1ley's last-minute scoring threat in- side the 10 yard line beating the Tigers 12-7. The following week high-rated P, M, Roose- velt, last year's mythical state champions, had to COACHING STAFF struggle from beginning to end to eke out a 7-0 victory. Before a crowd of 3,100 at the West Des Moines field, Valley outplayed and clearly outfought the Rough Riders, but Roosevelt turned a third quarter fumble into a touchdown to ruin Va11ey's chances. for anything but a moral victory. Valley blocked effectively to score twice on punt returns as they trimmed D. M. Lincoln 13-6 in the first triumph of the season. Both teams stuck to the ground, Valley throwing only one pass in a wet and muddy contest. Coach Elgin cleared the bench as the Tigers pounded Indianola, 45-6. This was their biggest chalk- up of the season and another conference win, Winterset's homecoming proved disastrous for Valley. The strongest Husky team in many seasons took advantage of Tiger errors to humiliate them, 61-6. Valley left the field at half-time trailing 47-7, yet LE FT TO RIGHT J, Peers D, Huth R, Powell B, Cayler SOPH played a 14-7 second half proving they weren't beaten in spirit. Knoxville beat Valley soundly but fairly. The Tigers lost eight fumbles on the wet field and Knox- ville took advantage. With two decisive defeats behind the Valley rolled past Pella, 21-7, before a sparse, rain-soaked gather- ing of loyal fans. Basically, the Tiger offense handled the ball well, despite the weather scoring inthe second quarter, and again early in the fourth after Pella's third quarter threat. A tough defense limited Pella to slim yardage on the ground, MANAGERS N gl , 'Q '-A J. When you're starting out in business you want to affiliate yourself with a good, sound, company and one that has the interest of its employees at heart. Here at the Equitable Life of Iowa you work in pleasant surroundings among congenial people ---- all friendly and helpful. Then too, there are so many things done to build up the right mental attitude and to keep morale high. Twice a day for instance, a coffee cart visits each floor of the building with hot and cold bev- erages and pastries. There are regular paid vacations, salary increases and all kinds of op- portunities for advancement in your position with the company. Also there is a complete medical service room with an attendant nurse for little ills and discomforts and a generous sick leave plan, too. Why don't you look into the Equitable -- ask for Miss Bush at the Personnel Office, 1317 Equitable Building, and discuss the opportunities that exist for you. E UITABLE LIFE INSURANCE CO.
