Hodson, W, Ritchie, D, Becker Uvianagerj, Boys basketball at Valley High reached a new peak in the 1952-53 season, The Tigers finished with an enviable record of 17 wins 9 losses Reaching the sub-state tournament for the first time since the old invitational tournaments of the twenties, the boys showed their high hopesand high spirits which they had throughout the 52-53 season, The boys had six senior mainstays - captain Bill Toms, Mike Murillo, Bill Buchanan, Bill Coleman, John Conyers and a late arrival Scott Keller. Offensive standouts included juniors Kent Gaer and Roger Ritchie and sophomore Frank Anderson, The defensive record was also high-rated this season due to the efforts and the capable coaching of Ozzie Lane. They were runners up in the State Indoor Class A meet held at Iowa City, runners up at the Valley Relays, and fourth place in the Conference meet They were chamnions of the Ottumwa Relays, Grinnell Relays, District Class A meet, winner of dual meets with lohnston and Winterset, and plac- ed ser-nnd in the annual Triangular meet. The 440 yard relay team, composed of Larry Eischen, Jerry Brubaker, Larry Adkins, and Bill Buchanan won the State Championship in the Class A Outdoor meet in the good time of 46, 2, the same com- bination won the 440 relay at the I. S, T, C, Relays, The squad of 1953 won a total of 12 trophies to add to the previous large collection for the Valley High trophy case. The accomplishments of the 1953 squad exceeded the fondest pre-season expectations of coach Tom E, Karpan who was assisted this year by Robert Anderlik.
