Merl Riggs came to Valley last summer not knowing where his office was. After he found it, a gym got painted, the gym floor was refin- ished, and things began to happen at Valley. Mr. Riggs came to Valley from Cleveland Iunior High where he had been principal for three years. Before that, he had been principal at McKinley and Monroe Iunior Highs. Born and raised in Nebraska, Mr. Riggs received his BA from York Col- lege there. Then he came to New Mexico where he received his mas- ter's in school administration from Highlands. He taught at Wilson lun- ior High for 10 years. Mr. Riggs and his wife Ernestine have one daughter, Ruth, who is in college. lv,

New Principal Meri R1gg5 F A . .1 , Members of the school board for Albuquerque Public Schools are Daniel McKinnon, Maureen Luna, Henry Willis, Ted Martinez, and Ioseph Zanetti Maureen Luna, a new member of the school board, was elected to replace Ieanette Stromberg who has retired. Ms. Luna joined the other four board members in deciding APS policy. Ernest Stapleton, principal at Val- ley from 1956-1962, is in his third year as superintendent. Working closely with Mr. Staple- ton was Robert Montoya. His work as North Area Superintendent greatly benefited three high schools, twenty-two junior highs, and sev- enty-nine elementary schools in the North Area. BERT EVERETT MARLENE DUNAWAY MA School Administration MA School Administration Vice Principal Vice Principal Valley's administration was made up of forty-seven years of loyal serv- ice from Mel Gonzales, Bert Everett, Marlene Dunaway and Marie Hays. These four people along with the secretaries helped Merl Riggs to run Valley in his first year as principal. Mr. Everett is primarily concerned with curriculum planningg Ms. Duna- way works primarily with data proc- essing and senior graduation require- ments: and Mr. Gonzales works mostly with attendance and building and grounds.
