Abbie Is NHSR Queen; Abbie is shown here on the night of her coronation with the runners-up, Miss Nebraska and Miss Wyoming. Abbie Caplin, a horsewoman since her third birthday, won the 1963 crown for National High School Rodeo Queen. It started by winning the New Mexico High School Rodeo Queen ti- tle in Santa Rosa, N. Mex. From there she went to Tarkio, Missouri, to com- pete in the national contest. The seven- teen girls competing were judged on personality, intelligence, appearance, and horsemanship. There were 10 per- formances in 5 days. Abbie won over the other state queens to succeed Pam Taylor, last year ' s N.H.R.S. Queen. This is Abbie ' s second year of competition, but her eleventh in horse- showing. She has won many state awards and trophies for her riding ability. Her favorite events for com- petition are Western Riding and West- ern Pleasure. She has also won the honors of being Miss Northdale Rodeo Queen and the N. Mex. Junior Rodeo Association ' s Queen. After graduating she plans to go to college and take a liberal arts course, but is not sure what to major in. How- ever, Abbie does want to train and ride other people ' s horses. Abbie puts on the boots she won for being 1963 NHSR Queen.

Sally Goes to Brazil! Sally Mattingly was Valley ' s 1963 foreign ex- change student to Brazil. She stayed with a family in Sao Paulo, Brazil and while there, learned many of their unusual customs. As a result of her trip, she was able to meet many of the Brazilian teenagers and participate in their activities. Sally has not only been an active foreign ex- change student, but she has also taken part in num- erous school affairs, including student council, Vik- ettes, National Honor Society, Senior Senate, Bowl- ing Club, Varsity Cheerleader, Girl ' s State, Science Club, and Speech Club. In spite of these numerous activities, Sally some- how manages to maintain an excellent 4.0 academic average. Sally types a letter to her family in Brazil. Along with everything else, Sally plays the piano. Sally spends part of her daily life in academic work. 23

Betty Is Miss Teenage N.M Out of 126 attractive girls and later five finalists, Miss Betty Purvis became Miss Teenage New Mexico. The girls were judged on the same basis used through- out the U.S., on intelligence, appearance, personality, poise, and talent. Betty ' s talent is singing and Mr. Sheets, Valley chorus teacher, helped her with her num- ber, I ' m Just a Girl Who Can ' t Say No, from Okla- homa. After winning her title here, Betty went to the Miss Teenage America contest in Dallas, Texas. Betty says, Dallas was a week of excitement, friendship, and work. Most of their time was spent practicing for the show. Betty was elected head cheerleader for their cheerleading dance routine. Between practices, they had fun and did such things as play football with the Dallas Cowboys and visit Six Flags Over Texas. Betty says, It was an un- forgettable experience for 50 lucky girls; exchanging ideas, sharing activities, and most of all, Friendship! Her biggest honor at the contest was being chosen as Miss Teenage Photogenic. U.ยป Betty poses with her mother and father after her corona- tion. Betty, Miss Teenage Photogenic!
