Ingrid Comes to N.M. ; This year ' s foreign exchange student came to Valley from Sweden. Her name . . . Ingrid Holm. A tall, honey-blonde student, Ingrid says: As an impression I can tell you that I have never seen so many extra activities in a school before. You also have a variety of subjects which I have not been able to take in Sweden. Before I arrived I had never been to a football game (perhaps because they do not play football in Sweden, but prefer soccer), so I was naturally surprised to discover what fun it was! Another thing I was surprised at was the informality of the students. Now that I have grown ac- customed to it, however, I find it quite normal. Ingrid has been staying at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Legant during her stay in New Mexico. While here, she has taken numerous trips aro und New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Mexico. Com- menting on the trips Ingrid says: The surroundings here are quite different from what I am used to in Sweden and I sometimes find what I see hard to believe. I only wish that time wouldn ' t go by so fast! One of the reasons that Ingrid has found time going by so fast is due to her active participation in all Valley activi- ties. She is a member of student council, speech club, honor society, ski club, and was an honorary member of the 1963 Homecoming court. Ingrid spends part of her leisure time reading the greatest work of American novelist and poet Edgar Lee Masters. At the Legant household Ingrid, Amy, and Pat join in piano and singing en- tertainment. Having a friendly discussion in the Legant living room are Ellen, Pat, Mrs. Legant, Amy, Dr. Legant and In- grid.

Sally Goes to Brazil! Sally Mattingly was Valley ' s 1963 foreign ex- change student to Brazil. She stayed with a family in Sao Paulo, Brazil and while there, learned many of their unusual customs. As a result of her trip, she was able to meet many of the Brazilian teenagers and participate in their activities. Sally has not only been an active foreign ex- change student, but she has also taken part in num- erous school affairs, including student council, Vik- ettes, National Honor Society, Senior Senate, Bowl- ing Club, Varsity Cheerleader, Girl ' s State, Science Club, and Speech Club. In spite of these numerous activities, Sally some- how manages to maintain an excellent 4.0 academic average. Sally types a letter to her family in Brazil. Along with everything else, Sally plays the piano. Sally spends part of her daily life in academic work. 23
