Spirit of Service, or SOS as the group is called, made 1959-60 a successful and eventful year. These girls began their activities by assisting in the national UNICEF drive. followed by a collection for a Christmas basket for a deserving family. A March of Dimes dance, co-sponsored with the Key Club, was the groupis main project for the year. Although these active girls devoted a great deal of time to service, they managed to find time to boost the spirit of our school. Goal posts were decorated during football season. while bas- ketball found them busy making and selling pom poms. A busy year-well completed. They continually impress their upper- classmates with their spirited am- bitions. Two fine examples of these clever sophomores are Donna Green and ,lim Hill. Donna, a peppy "B" Team cheerleader. enjoys being with people and meeting new friends. A sincere interest in school life has gained m any honors for Donna, and all of her classmates respect Donna as a leader. .lim has a wonderful way of be- ing always willing to help his friends in any way he can. In- terested in athletics he spends most of his time practicing bas- ketball and was a member of the Varsity Basketball team. In his extra time ,lim works hard toward furthering the Sophomore Class. by being a member of Sophomore Senate. We wish both of these sopho- mores the best of luck for their future years at Valley. As a voting delegate for the Inter School Student Council and for the State Student Council Convention, Marc had a chance to meet other students from different schools. A member of the debate team, Marc was presented with several awards for his exceptional speaking ability. Very adept at skiing, he was chosen to be Vice'President of the newly formed Ski Club. Keeping his scholastic record high and making many friends Marc had little time to spare. He did however, find time to give French lessons to inter- ested students. The students have certainly enjoyed Marcus and have tried hard to make his visit a memorable one. Marc is pictured here with Mark Simonds, left. the oldest boy in the Simonds family. Playing for school competition as well as for their own enjoyment these boys have energetically participated in this sport. They are, left to right: Coach Crocco. Freddy Miera, Clem Ortega, Jim Johnston, Andy Chavez. Albert Gonzales. Inspiring school spirit and student cooperation these capable girls have wholeheartedly undertaken the responsibili- ties of Varsity Cheerleaders. Arranging countless pep assemblies, making posters, and attending regular practices are only some of the many activities associated with being a cheerleader, and each of these leaders has more than done her part. As good will ambassadors to other schools. they have been a credit to Valley High School. The 1959-60 student body can congratulate tfrom left to rightl Jan Henry. Bonnie Billings, Nancy Harris, Yvette Pearl. and Nancy Wheeler for their valuable service to our school. Vurslty Cheerleaders Go Tennis Team Cheerleaders Deserving more recognition than they receive, the "B" team cheerleaders have created a real interest in "B" team and sophomore sports during the past year. Through these girls the students have seen how important their support for MB" team competition is. By participating in pep assemhlies, never missing a game, and cooperating with the Varsity cheerleaders, these girls have shown their real devotion to Valley High. Confident of their capabilities, we can expect these future leaders to continue their good work. The "B" team cheerleaders are, from left to right: Connie Claus, Laura Rosenberg, Susan Thomasma, Cam Monson and Donna Green. Playing on this year's tennis team are Chuck Bond, Floyd Martinez, Jimmy George, Mark Simonds, ,lim Matthews, Coach Fox. Eugene Scott, was pronounced by our Principal, Ernest Stapleton. at the annual Memorial Assembly on April 13. 1960: "Our memorial assembly this morning carries a deeper meaning for us-faculty and students alike. I am referring to the sudden and shocking passing of Mr. Eugene Scott. a member of our Science Department. Mr. Scott had been at Valley High School for three years. During this time and perhaps more this year. Mr. Scott had been very close to Valley High School. both in spirit and in service. Yot only was he a serious, sincere and conscientious classroom teacher. but he extended his service to other departments. particularly in the Athletic Department. where he compiled statistics for fellow teachers and coaches. This attitude of service extended beyond the school boundaries to his private life. Gene Scott was a devoted family man. a loyal and professional teacher. and a Christian who offered his services to others. How many of us knew that on Sunday mornings, Gene would visit the Veterans' Hospital to wheel patients to chapel and to carry out other tasks for them. Hr. Scott was interested in Valley High School. in Albuquerque and in the state of New Mexico. He made the study of New Mexico a particular search of his own. He will be sorely missed by many and Valley High School will always remember him." Autographs TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY ANI' Na+!
