During the past three years, the Valhalla Wrestling teams have been building a program that could be competitive in the San Diego CIF Section. The present Varsity team members were the undefeated Junior Varsity and Freshmen teams during those three years. These teams, along with outstanding individuals, established standards for the future teams to follow. This year the Varsity has reaped a harvest of success from those past efforts. The Varsity team was led to a winning season by seniors Paul Esquibel, John Findel and Bryan Welsh, backed by leading scorers, junior Bob Taylor, and sophomore Ron Boehmke. The Norsemen Wrestlers take tremendous pride in the fact that though they were picked pre-season favorite to finish last in the Grossmont League, they were continually in the top 10 of the County and established a 5-O record before a loss, establishing themselves as contendors for the 1978 Grossmont League Championship, Perhaps an even more eventful moment of the season was the 27-23 victory over Monte Vista, ending their winning streak of 32 dual meets. Paul Esquisbel has been the outstanding Valhalla wrestler, establishing himself as CIF heavyweight contendor for the championship. Paul was undefeated in the league and champion of three tournamnets. If possible, an even more positive note would be that Valhalla has a young team, with only four seniors starting regularly, that has reached for and achieved success before its predicted time. The Varsity is supported by a Junior Varsity team that has only one dual meet defeat, and has been the champion and runner-up of two late season tournaments, producing eight individual champions. The Freshmen ' team, led by Coach Tim Buzbee, have been consistent in placing in the top three of this season's Freshmen tournaments. These Freshmen will lend Mat Maids: 3rd Row CL to Rl, Dawn Aaron, Janet Ruge, Tracy Pierson, Jill Bignell, Toni Nelson, Lisa Phillips, Carrie Peterson, Tracy Friet, Vicki Craig. 2nd Row, Kathy Roberts, Mary Ray, Sandy Schmidt, Carol Small, Teresa Welsh, Pat Esquibel, Cassie Kouns, Kelly Nicodemous. lst Row, Janice Kouns, Brenda Andrews, Robin Ervin. strength in the development of future Varsity Wrestling Team: Back Row CL to Rl, Coach Ned Blass, Brian Welsh, Steve successful Valhalla wrestling teams.
