With 3 of the 12 Varsity members returning from last year, we built the team from Junior Varsity and new Freshmen members. We've kept a large number of girls on the JV team to prepare for next year. The girls' Varsity Tennis Team consists of 4 singles players and 4 doubles teams. Outstanding performers for the year include Carole Burgess playing rlil singles with a record of 23 wins and 9 losses. The doubles team of Nancy Martin and Barbara Clift, playing third and fourth Varsity doubles, had a record of 25 wins and 7 losses. Singles players along with Carole Burgess were Lori Cranmore, playing second, Jessie Russell as third, and Michelle Reed as fourth. A good doubles team is sometimes a diflicult combination to acquire. The two players must be extremely compatible and communicative to play well together. The doubles players of this year were exceptional. Along with Nancy Martin and Barbara Clift, the combinations of Audrey Hoyt and Maureen Sulivan, Christy Caldwell and Karen Mc Levie and Lori Flor and Michelle Reed, were all excellent Varsity combinations. They were very cooperative, contributed a strong sense of team unity. The Junior Varsity Team is composed of 4 doubles teams and it is a preparatory step to Varsity. These girls showed tremendous improvement throughout the season. They should no doubt be considered the most improved JV team in the Grossmont League. They will add strength and depth to future tennis seasons. Although tennis is thought of primarily as an individual sport, it can be effective as a team sport also. Not only do the characteristics of cooperation, communication and respect enter this sport, but tennis when working together as a team, can ' enhance a person's self concept and self esteem in a very positive manner. Win or lose, providing each individual with something positive that can in some way benefit them in their lifetime, is what participation in a sport is all about.
