In the short history of Valhalla Track and Field there have been a remarkable number of outstanding performers. This year's squad promises to add to that distinguished list. Leading the way on the men's team will be nationally- ranked shot putter and discus thrower lVlatt Gauthier. With the help of his coach Larry Pear, lVlatt returns this year as the top high schooler in the nation. Other athletes that will corner a spot in Norse history will be the Vavra brothers, lVlark and Kurt. lVlark is one of the fastest low hurdlers in the county and leads the team in the highs. His brother Kurt is an outstandin hurdler in his own right and also challenges the school records in both the high jump and the triple jump. Also showing promise in this year's track picture is our mile relay team being led by Corky Retson, Rob Kastan, Rich Reidman, and lVlark Vavra. This team showed its promise early by being invited to run the Jack-in-the-Box Invitational. With the aid of new coach Jim Franksen, we expect to see them on the All-CIF list. Rounding out our list of stars are several runners from the distance areas. Being helped by Coach Jerry Mills and paced by All-CIF distance man Robert lVlonteverde, men like Rat King, John Boncher, and Ken Williams can look forward to league championships in several events. The GirI's team is not without its stars and they include some great ones. Topping the list is state finalist in the mile Cheryl Flowers. Cheryl's Junior year should find her as the top-ranked runner in the county and surely no lower than her third place finish of last year at the state meet. Also showing greatness are sprinter Barb Clift, thrower Cathy Coleman, and distance people like Janet Silveira and Caren Cummings. As our list of top athletes grows, so 'will the memories of an eventful season. The team hopes that it has given you something to remember from the spring of 1978.
