L LABS HISTCDRV Thlrteen years ago on a brlght mornlng 1n September ftfty three ch1ldren began thelr school career with only twelve or1g1nal memb rs graduat1ng wmth the class of l945 They were Betty Bonge Paullne Barnett Bob Brockley Delores Colburn Ellzabeth Iohnson Albert Ioseph Lydta Kellner Iackle Peters G1lbert Phelps Velma Sherman Nell Thompson Ronald Van Buren and Lyle Lower Mrss W1lma K1nca1d was our teacher We were all assrgned to a lxttle red chalr at a certaln table Remember the paraffln grapes and green bowls the sunbonnet bables and overall boys the tea party when our mothers were 1nv1ted'P Once a day MISS Klncald would play rnuslc for us whlle we la1d on the floor and took a nap Those were the good old days' ln May 1933 we left our blocks and clay beh1nd and 1n the follow1nQ September entered the Flrst Grade Mxss O Keele was our teacher We had a Thanksglvmg program for our mothers The 1an1tor made us a large Dutch w1ndm1ll and we gave a Holland program for the upper grades MISS Ehzabeth Vaughn taught us 1n the Second grade B atnce Iordan Burton Hutch1son and Dwaln Hobson Jolned us th1s year Our art work and penmanshtp were most outstandmg nearly all were awarded the Palmer pm for near perfectron 1n penmanshtp because we were not d1sm1ssed unt1l four o clock half an hour later than 1n years DIQVIOUS Mlss Mabel Stedry was our teacher Remember Mlss Stedry s love for Mentholatum'? Our teacher taught us the graceful art of folk dancxng whlch 1n the next e1ght years developed rnto some expert Jltterbuggers Elame Reed 1o1ned us th1s year Mrs Eva Tyler saw us through the Fourth grade Th1s 1S the year we lost one of our playmates Teddy Hayes who was sertously hurt on a sletghrldrng party and dled a short tlme later at the Valentlne Hospltal Th1s year the grade school gave a May Fefe The Fourth Grade wound the Maypole Darlene Mendenhall and Vada Nlcol Jomed us as we entered the Flfth Grade to share our frrst expertence w1th f1re escapes A class off1ce was organ1zed th1s year Letters were wrltten to fellow classmates and dropped 1nto our postofftce then d1str1buted once every week Th1s year we gave the play Tom Sawyer Mlss lean Clarke was our teacher M1ss Holhs Hutclnson was our Slxth Grade teacher Th1s year we organ1zed the L1ve W1re Club Mr Gray the mus1c teacher trxed hard to teach us all the operas remember any of them? We often went to other grades for spellmg contests Don Iunod was the new pupll as we entered the Seventh Grade Mlss Colleen Ohver was our teacher Th1s year we organ1zed the Club known as The Gang Orlglnal songs and yells were wr1tten by class members 14- Q , . L LAW H l5TCRV In the fall of l94O we ent red 1nto the Elqhth Grade where we OCCUD1 d the new adlustable seat Els1e Carrler Jomed us here MISS Edna Hempel was our t acher Th1s ycar the Iunlor H1qh had an outstandmq basketball team In May came the b1q st event of our school career so far E1qhth Grade Com mencement As quests of MISS Els1e Roth the County Superlntendent we were taken on a scenlc tour That afternoon we were presented Wllh d1plomas at the CIIY aud1tor1um The theme of Bess Gearhart Morr1son the speaker was The Four Leaf Clover Each class member was presented wlth a four leaf clover corsaqe A freshmen we began the term amld the w1ldest confuslon Upper class men suppressed us and we were looked upon as belnq an 1nf r1or qroup We soon orqan1zed ourselves however and chose as our class sponsor MISS Iuha Vlele who proudly and eff1c1ently qu1ded us through those days of turmoll Our class ofhcers were Barbara MacDonald pres1dent Bob Brockley v1ce pre 1dent Darlene Mendenhall secretary treasurer Our enrollment was SIXIY three the 1ncrease due to students 1o1n1nq us from other d1str1cts Those who 1o1ned us were B1ll Burqe Dor1s Camm Betty Cherry Mary Cather1ne Foster Clem I-Iaqedorn Roberta Harms Mabel Gale Kenneth loseph B1ll Mlller Erma Monroe Arlene Montgomery Darrell Mundorf Els1e Shelbourne Norma Smlth Allce Ph1ll1ps Our sophomore year was no less eventful than our freshman year and our class Sp1I1l was 1n no way d1m1n1shed We had the pleasure to watch the newly enrolled freshman class qrope the1r way about the halls and class rooms as we had the year before Mtss Cole was chosen as our class spon sor Under her d1rect1on we conducted the coronat1on of the Kmq and Queen of Heart son Valent1ne s Day A poll of the entlre h1qh school was taken to choose a boy and q1rl from the Sentor Class as rulers for the day Thls affa1r was very 1mpress1ve and we hoped 1t would trad1t1onally become an annual h1ql'1 school affa1r Class off1cers for th1s year were Dor1s Cotton pres1dent Darlene Menden hall v1ce pres1dent Burton Hutch1son secretary treasurer Those who JO1I'19d us to make a total enrollment of SIXIY IIVQ were E1leen Schaefer and Rosella I-Ierrlnqton The Class of 1945 began the1r IUHIOI year w1th the usual rep for pep Class OIIICGFS selected for the year were Delores Colburn pres1dent Bob Brockley v1ce pres1dent Darlene Mendenhall secretary treasurer MISS Helen H1qq1ns was chosen our class sponsor We chose class IIUQS and DIUS and planned the Iun1or Semor Banquet wh1ch was very successful The Pan Amer1can theme was chosen be1nq the top1c cf 1nterest at that t1me Our banquet was held IH the CIIY aud1tor1urn It was served by the Women s Improvement Club QIX sophomore boys and g1rls were table wa1ters Each was dressed 1n the br1qht reqaha of a colorful f1esta The Iumor class play Speclal Deltvery was held on May 6 Those who made 1t a success were Bob Brockley Delores Colburn B1ll Burqe Clem Haqedorn Norma Srnlth Ellzabeth lohnson Darlene Menden hall E1leen Schaefer Bun Van Buren 15 , ,. ,- 1 .
