But when you strip away all the frivolous differences you will find that all people are basically the same, guided by the same emotions, desires, and predjudices. He is married and has two sons lAges nine and sixl. While a police officer in Birmingham Professor Barker received 12 Letters of Commendation and won The Kiwanis "Safe City Award" for the capture of two robbers in the act. Barker attended Jefferson State Junior College, and Samford Univer- sity while he was a police officer. After graduating Cum Laude from Sam- ford, Barker was awarded a Doctoral Fellowship in Sociology at Missis- sippi State University. Barker is currently A.B.D. at Mississippi State and is presently writing his Doctoral Dissertation. Professor Barker is a member of the American Society of Criminology and The National Council on Crime and Delinquency and four honor societies lAlpha Kappa Delta, Delta Tau Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta, and Pi Gamma Mui. He also has published one book and three articles on police corruption and presented papers at the last three meetings of The American Society of Criminology. In addi- tion to Professor Barker's scholarly pursuits he is an avid fbordering on obsessionl fisherman. He and his nine year old son can be found any Friday or Saturday at Brown's Pond in search of the "Hang" Bass. Thomas Barker - Sociology Criminal Justice I am an assistant professor of Biology and am also a registered nurse. I moved to Valdosta in August, 1963, from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. l became the first woman in Valdosta to be elected to the Valdosta City Council, having been elected in February 1972, and reelected in 1974. I was honored by fellow council members by being named Mayor Pro-tem of Valdosta. A strong concern for environmental problems has prompted me to be the prime mover for a tree protective ordinance which is now being tested in the courts. With my husband, H. Bernard Bechtel, I am a member of the National Wildlife Federation, the Audubon Society, Jacksonville Zoological Society and Philadelphia Zoological Society. My husband and I have a pronounced interest in herpetology, the study of reptiles and amphibians, which is evidenced in two outlets: photography of reptiles and amphibians and capture breeding of snakes with particular emphasis on the study of mutants. I am a Member of the Department of Special Education, and Director of the Child ren's Service Center and Teaching Clinic. I became interested in exceptional children in 1966 on my first visit to Central State Hospital while I was a student at Mercer University. I am on the advisory board of The Pointer, a periodical for teachers and parents of handicapped children, and have been a member of the Executive Committee of the state Council for Exceptional Children for the past four years. I am married to the former Peggy Cook of Pearson, Georgia, who is presently completing her studies in Special Education at VSC. I was Assistant Editor of the school paper as an undergraduate and was a member of a very active Student Government, being a Senior Class representative. I play tennis, golf, and bike a lot. My favorite place is the long beautiful beaches at Destin, Florida. One of the most influential people in my life has been Senator Bobby Kennedy. I feel that the key to support for exceptional children is public education. My favorite magazines are Exceptional Children, Time, and Sports Illustrated. My favorite book of all those I have read is Psychoanalysis, by Sigmund Freud. The most difficult thing for me to handle as a professor is a student who does not care about a course that he is taking, a course that involves learning skills and techniques to be used when working with a child who is handicapped. Even though 9595 of my students are really excited about their field, I 'am very concerned when even one student appears to be disinterested. When a student takes me for a course, I want this course to be the very best course that he has ever taken or ever will take at VSC. I take my job very seriously. Ronald E. Childs Special Ed 39 When the searching photographic eye of "Pine Cone" found me, I was on the phone talking about fire, title and business, three milestone developments in man's evolution. My conversation was not all that profound, of course, because it had to do only with the contractor who is putting a fireplace into my study. But deciding on getting a fireplace was a kind of milestone for me. I have enjoyed being here and talking with students about things important to their lives and mine. The new construction more or less cements my intention to bide here yet a while if it be possible. And perhaps to toast a few marshmallows between preparations for next day's discussions! A.T. My main interest with the degree program was in dance. After teaching several years in Kansas, I married and had two daughters. My husband was in the sales field so we moved a great deal ending up in Texas. I returned to teaching in secondary schools while living in Texas where my job included directing a forty-five girl dance drill team which performed for half time shows at the football games. These girls performed at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas at one time for the Dallas Cowboys. My arrival in Valdosta came after finishing my degree, a Masters in Counseling and Guidance at North Texas State University, and doing some job jumping in higher education to gain the experience I needed. Valdosta State College attracted me for I saw an opportunity to work directly with students in their development during post adolescent years. I live in a house with a cocker spaniel named Mikah, who was given to me by a student. He takes up a great deal of my time. , My hobbies include sewing, cooking, bridge and l like to work outside in the yard. I was a runner-up in the Valdosta Times Recipe Contest. Sara J. Fickertt - Associate Dean Student Affairs A 41 My hobbies are traveling, eating, and making new acquaintances. My travels have taken me throughout the States, to Europe, Russia, and the Far East. What has impressed me most is how people of different nationalities and backgrounds are so much alike. lt's not been difficult to communicate. My hands and facial expressions speak many languages with those we want to understand. Everyone is interested in good food and drink. Not many speak of politics or controversial subjects. Most people take pride in showing their best of whatever interests you. "Southern" hospitality can be found anywhere south of the North Pole. Maxine Gillespie - Library 'uf' .3 - -f 1 Q it . .X J. From my experience I can say that Valdosta is a great town but has some of the worst roads that I have ever seen. In addition to nursing, I also teach Red Cross swimming every year at the college pool. My hobbies include bridge and bowling. I have a white alley cat Jelly because he wobbles around the belly. I drive a 1964 Sprite sports car which I love. Phyllis Gilson - Nursing 5f?33Zm..Y Lx n In addition to teaching at VSC I am also Minister of music at the Lee Street Baptist Church. I have been music director of "Drumbeats in Georgia" at Jekyll Island and have appeared in recitals and oratorio performances through the South. My wife Carolyn is also a singer and a teacher. I also have two children, Julie Ann, 15, and Joseph, 13. My hobbies include writing, athletics, and horseback riding. I have been teaching at VSC since 1968. My goals in teaching are to expose my students to the joys of good music and to equip them with the necessary tools that will enable them to make a significant contribution to music education and to themselves. When I am not teaching I work on my own wood carving and sculpting at school, at home, or in my studio at the Pigeon Loft Gallery. During the summer vacation I migrate northward to my Ohio farm, located back in the woods at the end of a road to nowhere. Usually I go east for a week to visit museums and art galleries, and to see the wonders of the cities. During Christmas I head for Key West to enjoy the surf and water and visit my daughter and family. Recently I purchased some white sand dunes, trees and flowers on the ocean south of Tallahassee. Now I am designing a cabana which I will pre-fab in Valdosta and then assemble on the site next summer. After that- more vacations and weekends down that-a-way, and art. W. As a freshman at Washington and Lee University I broke all records for academic performance inever before or since has a student there failed every course including P.E.l. As a soldier, I again distinguished myself ll became the only enlisted man inthe entire history of the U.S. Army not to be given a reenlistment talkl. My feats as a manufacturing plant manager are still being talked about in business circles as nothing short of phenomenal il took a perfectly successful operation and within four years had driven it into the groundj. However, the crowning achievement of my life, the goal for which these other events had served to prepare me, came when, upon completing graduate school, I faced the prospect of unemployment and abject poverty. Fortunately, VSC saved me from unemployment. Valdosta was particularly appealing to me because I have always had a fear of strangers, and I had heard that there were no strangers in Valdosta. I was also afraid that if I remained in the North, someday soon some damn Klansman was going to burn a cross on my lawn, and I had heard that there were no Klansmen in Valdosta. Teaching at VSC has been fun. Never before have I encountered so many whose views are so different from mine, and exposing students to "truth" is a very pleasurable activity. The only frustrating thing is the knowledge that not every student can have the opportunity to learn the lessons of tolerance and humility at the feet of the ' world's greatest political scientist. Richard Seager Political Science 47 I am a native Georgian, educated at the universities in Georgia, Michigan, and Maryland. I taught medical chemistry at the University of Georgia and organic chemistry at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge before joining the U.S. Public Health Service in the late forties. My assignment in the Public Health Service involved searches for more effective insecticides to control mosquitoes and flies and other insects known to leave human diseases. Later, I was transferred to a toxicological laboratory in Wenatchee, Washington to study the effects of spray chemicals on humans. In 1953 I joined Mead Johnson and Company in Dansville as director of research in the chemistry of medicinal products. In this capacity I travelled throughout the far East, particularly in Japan, in search of Asiatic drugs which could be brought to the United States for development and sold in the Western Hemisphere. I later returned to Japan for two academic quarters to teach chemistry at Daito Bunka University. Three years ago I moved to Valdosta and have been teaching chemistry at VSC since that time. W.T. Unfortunately, I have come to realize in the process of attempting to describe myself that I have little or no real knowledge about my subject. I certainly am not being excessively modest when I say that I cannot find anything about myself that is especially noteworthy. Nor can I find anything especially bad. However, I certainly would not say that I had no character at all. I possess neither the exuberance and optimism of youth nor the wisdom and resignation of old age, which means, I suppose that I am the classic example of one who is middle-aged. I have interests, of course. I occasionally dabble in oil painting, though not with the competence I desire. I enjoy the other arts, though not finding the delight of discovery they once offered. I am a romanticist in the nineteenth-century sense of the term, who, like Wordsworth in his later years, finds change somewhat disturbing. am an expatriot, who will never return to the southwest of his youth. If I were to summarize myself, my attitude toward life, at this point in time, I could not do better than the following: Life is a game that must be played: This truth at least, good friends, we knowg So live and laugh, nor be dismayed As one by one the phantoms go. KA represents al- most every college in the southeast and is now spreading throughout the country. Delta Rho Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order was founded at Valdosta State College campus on November 19, 1971. With General Robert E. Lee as their spiritual founder, the KA's celebrate their annual Old South week every spring. Fteliving the Old South, Kappa Alpha takes great pride in holding the Old South Ball. In the few short years that Kappa Alpha has been on the VSC campus, it has formed one of the strongest bonds of brotherhood. KA distin- guishes themselves in all areas of the college life from the faculty, ad- ministration, SGA Comptroller, IFC Vice-President, Yearbook Editor, SGA Senators, Greek God, to all areas of intramural sports, campus honor societies and clubs. ww' no 'W' T l -od?" -'UK' gil A . .'i9ff'l L. . .
