VAliKYHIAN VAILSBURG HIGH SCHOOL 107 IVY STREET NEWARK, NJ According to Norse mythology, the “Valkyrie” were the handmaidens of Odin, king of the gods. Legend holds that the Valkyrie hovered over battlefields and decided the fates of the warriors. In addition to choosing which Vikings would be victorious. the Valkyrie conducted the souls of slain heroes to Valhalla, the great hall of Immortality. This edition of the Vailsburg High School VALKYRIAN contains a legend of the warriors who are members of the Class of '86. The Vikings are destined for greatness and determined to create a positive impact on our world. We trust that the Valkyrie will grant us the opportunity to achieve a level of self-awareness and social consciousness that ranks us among the greatest humans to walk the earth. To the generations which follow, we leave a legacy of hope. Joy and the spirit of cooperation. In the meantime: WE LIVE FOR NOW .. . WE LOOK TO THE FUTURE ... WE REMEMBER FOREVER! WE LOOK TO WE LIVE FOR NOW... WE REMEMBER FOREVER Life at times, seems so unfair; But all we can do is learn and share. The ladder of life is the toughest to climb. Growing up definitely takes time. Making choices is what we all go through. Living by those choices is sometimes hard to do. We learn a little from each mistake And hope that next time, the right path we’ll take. -Keisha Barnes KEEPING YOUR DREAM ANEW Martin, we know you're up there looking at us . . . To see your dream come true. But there are dreamers behind you That are keeping your dream anew. You said, “Life’s quality is more important Than how long we last . Let’s start cleaning up the future And forget about the past. Without raising a hand to strike a man Just because he hates you so. But helping him to find that love Is the right way to go. Sylvia D. Williams DELIGHTFUL . . . INSIGHTFUL RECEIVING . . . CONCEIVING . . . BELIEVING . . . ACHIEVING . . . WE LIVE FOR NOW THE FUTURE; WE REMEMBER FOREVER OUR CLASSY ADVISOR MR. RAYMOND SIMMONS SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR Guiding the Class of ’86 through a myriad of activities and respon-sabllltles was not an easy task. From fund raisers, rings, class dues and prom bids to trips, diplomas, graduation. caps and gowns. Thank you for doing It with style. If we choose our friends for what they are. not for what they have . . . And If we deserve so great a blessing; then, they will be always with us ... In presence. In absence, and even after death ... In the amber of memory. —Sir John I.uhdork TWO HEADS ARE BETTER MS. I.UIS BLACKMAN served as co-ad-visor to this year’s VALKYRIAN Her expertise. insight, support, creativity, organizational skills and Inspiration were priceless entities in the development of this yearbook. The Class of 1986 will always be grateful for her willingness to help capture the moments that will be etched in our memories forever. Thank you. Ms. Blackman, for a job well done. MR. WAYNE SLAPPY has been the advisor to the VALKYRIAN for four years. He has taken this opportunity to record the scholastic, athletic and social history of Vallsburg H.S. very seriously. Each book, though tediously assembled, has been a labor of love. The VALKYRIAN has helped to perpetuate the pride that dwells within the lives of everyone who has walked the halls of Vailsburg H.S. “There Is no such thing as perfection. Everything can be Improved upon. This may be my last yearbook: therefore. I hope it Is my best. I also hope that the Class of ’86, possibly the last graduating class from Vallsburg H.S.. will enjoy this collection of memories. In the recent past Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, and Prince and Tina Turner set records unmatched in the history of the music industry. Wynton Marsalis is still the darling of the American jazz scene. Quincy Jones is beginning to be recognized for his musical genius and contributions to the cultural schemata of the world. David Bowie is also an actor. Madonna Louise Ciccone has a brassy image and New Jersey's Bruce Springsteen is still the “Boss”. Bob Dylan sings for the Lord now. Patti LaBelle's hairstyle wowed us at the Apollo tribute to Motown. Music remains a vehicle of universal communication. USA for Africa and LIVE AID Concert are melodic examples of the magnitude, magnetism, and magic of music. Listed below are some of the songs which filled our air waves. Rock (hr Bells-L.L. What Is the .ittractlon ol Ihlv color which may be formed by combining blues and reds? f rom 1985 and Prince's Purple Rain lo 1986 and Alice Walker's (by way of Stephen Spell berg and Quincy Jones ! The Color Purple we were tinted with this color. Why? Does the fact that purple symbolizes high rank and royalty have anything to do with Its selection as the principle color for our school? Is that a factor In our prominence among Newark schools? The answer to these questions may date back to the story of the Phonecian dog who bit Into a purple dye spuing shellfish called the mol lu k Purpura or mutex Iruculus. From this discovery. Phonecian ships carried the famous Tyrian dye throughout the ancient world The dye was not taken from mures blood, but the slimy secretion of a gland common to many shellfish in the snail family Surprisingly. the secretion is not blue, red or violet at first, but whitish However, once exposed to the sunlight It changes colors passing through shades of yellow and green before settling Into the purple color Purple garments are mentioned throughout the Bible as clothing worn by royalty and high priests Archeological data verifies that, as early as 1400 B.C.. mure shells were used to manufacture the purple dye found at the seaport of ancient Ugarlt. Because great labor was used to extract the purple dye. only royalty and the wealthy could afford such richly colored garments. A mantle of the best purple of Tyre cost ten thousand sesterces (over $500.) In ancient Greece only a chosen few were allowed to wear the Octavius Clavls — a purple collar with gold trim. Only the elites! were permitted this honor. Hence, wealth was not the only basis for the privilege to wear purple. There must be more significance than the mere socioeconomic value of this rich color. What else Is so Intriguing, so captivating about the color purple? Some theorists contend that colors can have an Influence on our behavior, moods, and mental state. From the darkest pigment to Its lightest hue. purple elicits a variety of emo lions: passion to confidence and sorrow to Joy. All of which are the gleaning of the triumph that accompanies the struggle for something valuable This tends to support the notion held by various religious leaders as to the spiritual nature of the color purple Is this what Prince and Ms Walker were trying to prick our consclosnesses about? Certainly, there Is much we can learn from studying this color A color held so dear by those who've walked the hallowed halls of Hootervllle High.” This legacy has been handed down to the Viking Class of '86’ The entire student body, faculty, staff and administration were forced to grapple with the future existence of our school beyond this year Our focus for the 1985-86 school year was twofold (1) to do everything possible to save our school, and (2) to do whatever It takes to make this possibly the best year in the history of Vallsburg High School We can overcome Though shaken and oppressed by some We’ll preserve our color purple. 9 Our garments are royal Through blood, surest and tears ure toll Preserving our color purple. k No matter where we go This all Vikings know 1 We will preserve our color purple. — WAYNE SLAPPY VINTAGE 1986 VALKYRIAN STAFF WE SING PRANCE, STYLE AND PROFILE WITH CLASS Kim's drive for excellence Is apparent THE LADY VIKES The Girl’s Basketball Team Is always competitive with the Newark City League.
