Everywhere we turn—newspapers, radio, television—evi- dence of man's aggression can be found. In order to preserve and maintain peace, the peo- ple of the world must forget their prejudices, aid one another, and learn to live in harmony. The key to universal harmony is well stated in the theme of the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair: Peace Through Understanding.” Understanding comes from insight, insight comes from education, and education is the ob- jective of the school. School stimulates us to think, to compare, to criticize, to comprehend; it makes us aware of our environment and how we fit into it. The study of classroom subjects— mathematics, English, business law, chemistry, consumer problems, etc.—under the expert direction of the faculty, prepares us to promote the betterment of mankind. While academic pursuits arc of first impor- tance, extracurricular activities are a necessary phase of school to make our education com- plete. These activities, which include sports and clubs, teach us how to get along with one another. No matter what the organization, its success is directly dependent upon the willing- ness of its members to forget their differences and work for the benefit of the group. If the peoples of the world would emulate the spirit of cooperation shown by students who w'ork together in school organizations, we would have that harmony and friendship, that peace through understanding,” which can overcome the aggression and hatred besetting the w-orld today. 3 ALMA MATER Edwina Luane Risaland ‘6S In honor of thy banner Our joyous voices ring. r ? r rf r Let liberty with loyalty Eternally light the sky; As Vikings we’ll remember Thy name O Vailsburg High. FABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION FACULTY SENIORS CLASS ADVISORS CLASS OFFICERS SPORTS CLASSES ACTIVITIES FEATURES C AND I OS A D V E R TIS E M E N T S 6 DEDICATION During our high school years we were fortunate to have an expert guidance staff to aid us, advise us, and pull us through our difficulties. All our coun- selors shared in helping us solve our problems and plan our futures; to each of them we offer sincere thanks. But we owe our greatest debt of gratitude to our head counselor. Miss Elizabeth A. McHugh. Miss McHugh knew each one of us personally. She took time from her busy schedule to lend a sympathetic car to all our problems, no matter how large or small they seemed. Many of us first met Miss McHugh when we entered the seventh grade. We were her 'children” then; we arc her children” now, as we always shall be. We are much richer individuals for having known Miss McHugh, and we are grateful for having her to guide us through a very difficult part of our lives. To express heartfelt appreciation for all she has done, we, the class of nine- teen hundred and sixty-five, proudly dedicate our yearbook, the VALKYRIAN, to Miss Elizabeth A. McHugh. The theme of the impressive 1964-65 New York World’s Fair was peace through understanding . Through understanding one gains insight into himself, other human beings, and the many problems of the world. As a result of this insight, the feeling of kinship among men is increased and the solution of world problems is brought closer. Understanding, therefore, is the most effective key to peace. By far the most instrumental factor at Vailsburg High in bringing about understanding is the faculty. The competent teacher not only instructs from texts and teaching aids, but also relics on his own experi- ence, wisdom, and insight. The latter are far more valuable and effec- tive than any books or aids he may employ. We at Vailsburg High have been fortunate in having teachers who have a wealth of experience, wisdom, and insight as well as knowledge to foster the understanding that leads to peace. VAILSBURG HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL DR. JOHN T. McSHARRY 10 MESSAGE TO SENIORS It is right that Graduation should be called Commencement Day, for it is not the end but the beginning. The four years you spent at Vailsburg should now begin to bear fruit. The many hours spent at study, at play, and at the many school activities will soon prove their value. But above all, the phi- losophy of our Viking motto. Liberty with Loyalty,” will soon come into its own. As adults you will have even more liberties than you had at Vailsburg. Now, you will have to exercise your loyalty” to a greater degree—loyalty to your conscience, to your family, to the Purple and White. You were good for Vailsburg! It is our hope that we have been good for you, too! We wish you well. John T. McSharry MR. WILLIAM A. MONPRODE, JR. VICE PRINCIPAL Congratulations on receiving the high school diploma. It is an important milestone on the road to being an educated person, but it is not the end of that road. Education is a life long process—in school and out. No one is truly educated until he is able to tell right from wrong, to do the right thing when it ought to be done, and to do it regardless of his own convenience. Some never acquire this ability and so are forever uneducated regardless of what diplomas or degrees they possess. May you continue to grow in self-discipline of thought and action to the gratification of yourself, your family, and your fellowmen. 12 Mr. John W. Hcdstrom Mr. Frank J. Hill Mrs. Esther Norton GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT Miss Elizabeth A. McHugh We, the class of '65, express our deep appreciation to Mr. Foley, one of our senior counselors, for the time and effort he put forth in our behalf. Known for his humor and con- geniality, Mr. Foley’ has helped us tremendously throughout our senior year. His efforts to guide us wisely toward our future careers have helped us attain a full and correct knowledge of ourselves and our goals. Mr. Eugene Foley OUR COUNSELORS We are greatly indebted to Mr. Groomc, our other class counselor, for his outstanding service to the senior class. No task was too great for him, whether it concerned one senior or the entire class. He was always ready to hear our problems and help us solve them. Mr. Groomc will always be re- membered for his love of young people, his sense of humor, and his enthusiasm, as he guided us through one of the most difficult periods of our lives. Mr. John W. Seniors Having passed over the threshold of graduation, we take with us the basic knowledge and skills which wc have acquired through our high school days. During these years, we have learned to face responsi- bilities and to cope with the many problems of our day. Most important of all, we have learned that all men arc brothers and that we must live in harmony with others to gain everlasting peace through understand- ing. Our days at Vailsburg High School have been very happy and valu- able ones. As we look back on our experiences of the past four years, we realize that our love for and loyalty to Vailsburg High will always flourish. As wc go forth into the world of new knowledge, may God be with us always. 28 ti 29 SENIOR ADVISORS We, members of the Senior Class, express our sincere gratitude to Mrs. Penelope Vekiaris and Mr. Michael Eber, our class advisors. Congratulations to the 1965 Graduates OFFICERS and MEMBERS VAILSBURG HIGH SCHOOL FATHERS CLUB Nearly everyone at Vailsburg is involved in some way with the sports program. Both player and spectator learn good sportsmanship, loyalty, and respect for and understanding of their teammates and opponents. Respect and understanding help remove prejudices and lead to the goal of peace through understanding. A school's participation in interscholastic competition is an important factor in the development of that school's reputation. A reputation is built not only upon the won and lost record, but also upon the be- havior and sportsmanship of the teams and their supporters. Measured by either of these standards, Vailsburg's reputation is among the best. 2___________________________________________________________________________________________________ 89 VIKINGS BEGIN END SEASON VICTORY L. to R. Thirsting for revenge, the Vikings opened the season by sur- prising Central and the Newark News sports writer, too, by defeating the Blue Devils, 7-0. Vailsburg’s score came late in the second quarter when Danny D'Amico battered across the enemy goal line. The conversion was successful. Vailsburg’s brilliant de- fensive action held Central scoreless. After seven losses, Vailsburg met West Essex at the Scarlet Knights’ field for the Thanksgiving Day classic. Trailing 9-6 at half time, we pulled the game out with a touchdown on the second play of the final quarter. Don Bernard had it set up by intercepting a pass and running it back 48 yards. Kenny Miller then passed to Bernard for the winning touchdown. The team has great hopes for the future because of the ex- perience it has gained in the past three seasons and the promising underclassmen who arc coming up. 90 Viking halfback Miller stuns Panther defense on end run. With a fine record of 13-3-2, Coach Mirahella can be congratulated for his outstanding work in molding a championship sc]uad which demonstrated a high level of team play. In the city league, Vailsburg placed second to East Side. It must be remembered that East Side, which is a much larger school and has had more experience, is a perennial soccer power. The climax of the season came with the championship game against River Dell. The game was scoreless until late in the first quarter when Vailsburg, on a tremendous drive, scored its first goal. The second and final goal for the Vikings came in the third quarter on a penalty kick. River Dell was saved from a shutout when they scored on a penalty kick in the last two seconds of the game. VIKINGS CLINCH Ray DcRiggi In 1964, for the second year in a row. Vailsburg High's fighting nine clinched the City League Championship. Mr. Reilly, the team's coach, had the distinct honor of winding up his coaching career with a championship squad. The season reached a climax in the final game when Vailshurg and East Side, each with identical records of 13 wins and 4 losses, met for the championship. The Vikings won the decisive victory by a close 2-1 margin. Four members of the team received SECOND CITY TITLE a special honors. Bob Feld and Joe Abruzzeze were elected to the all-city squad, along with Mike Insabella, whose grand-slam home run in the Wecquahic game will always be remembered. Ray DeRiggi was elected to the all-county and all-state teams. Other seniors who contibutcd greatly to the team's success were Jim Bartilotta, whose pinch-hitting ability was a great asset, and Bill DeLucia, a boy who saved many a game with his almost supernatural defensive abil- ity. wm Al DcMartino artilotta Mike Insabella L. to R. This year the club became a team and under the expert coaching of Mr. Michael Mirabella made a fine showing in Group III competition. Although the Vikings placed fifth in the first city-wide championship, two senior matmen took second place honors and two underclassmen re- ceived bronze medals for capturing third place. Based on the perform- ance of underclassmen who will be returning in the fall, it can be safely stated that our wrestling team is destined for the top. We had hoped to have at least a . 00 record, said Mike Insabella, dynamic 5' 6 guard at the close of the season, hut the odds were against us.” With the loss of two of our starters, Coach Liddy had to do some intricate manipu- lating to keep the team on its feet. Lack of height was our main handicap stated Vailsburg’s all-time high scorer Ray DcRiggi. Ray broke the school record with an im- pressive 345 points for the season. Another school record was broken by Jim Bartilotta, who pulled down 260 rebounds. The outstanding achievement of the season was the defeat of Barringer by the score of 120-78. A victory of equal magnitude had not been paralleled in Essex County for many years. The great sense of humor of the Viking five kept morale high throughout the season; and although the squad did not have a winning team, good sportsmanship and high spirits prevailed at all times. 104 Craig Brattcr GOLF Golf is a sport that has greatly increased in popularity in recent years. Once only a sport of executives, it has developed into an activity that any- one can participate in. When the thrill of inter-scholastic competition is added to it, one can see that it is potentially a major high school sport. Several schools in the local area have organized golf teams. In its first year of competition, Vailburg s team, coached by Mr. Joseph Liddy, racked up four wins and only one loss. The team can look forward to broader fields of competition and greater success in the future. Pat Caraglia Bob Prignano L. to R. First Row: Alan Thomas, Pat Caraglia, Steve Hcrkner, Ben Accardi. Aaron Lewit Dan Mazzagctti Coach Hill The Vailsburg track team opened its 1965 season with bright prospects, despite the fact that few lettermen had returned. In the past, few candidates had gone out for this grueling sport, but this year proved to be different. When practice began in early March, the team consisted of about 100 boys. Under the coaching of Mr. Frank J. Hill and Mr. Arthur Scavonc, the Vikings spent many afternoons practicing on the sidewalks around Vailsburg; and by the first meet, 75 rockhard men faced their opponents. The team showed vast improvement over previous years. no Dave Candelmo Bob Zamarra Steve Pollack CROSS COUNTRY RUNS OUT A GOOD SEASON Thomas Geraghty Charlie Armenti Jeff Javerbaum First Row: M. On the following pages appear candid photographs of the faculty and students of Vailsburg High School in various classes. Here the foundation for understanding is being laid by those who hold the future of our country and the world in their hands. 119 A.P. MATHEMATICS IV MATHEMATICS In a world that is becoming ever more mathematically-minded, a strong back- ground in mathematics is essential for the well-rounded person. The mathematics de- partment here at Vailsburg is providing this background most efficiently. The regu- lar mathematics courses: Algebra I and II, plane geometry, trigonometry and advanced algebra, provide the average student with a full reservoir of mathematical knowledge. For the enterprising student, an advanced placement program is offered. This pro- gram includes a year of college calculus and trigonometry taught by the department head, Mr. Martin Moskowitz. A.P. MATHEMATICS III TRICiONOMETR Y I DRAMATICS ENGLISH HONORS ENGLISH The Vailsburg High School English De- partment, under the direction of Dr. Elias I.evinson, offers students a beneficial and well-rounded curriculum. The required four- year English course gives pupils the funda- mentals of language, composition, and liter- ature. In addition, there is a special honors program for students with exceptional abil- ity in English. These honors classes arc offered in sophomore, junior, and senior years. Supplemental courses in public speak- ing, dramatics, journalism, and creative writ- ing are also offered here at Vailsburg. ENGLISH 7-8 SECRETARIAL The secretarial pattern, which stresses typewriting and stenographic skills, pre- pares a student to begin an exciting career as a secretary. In the senior year it offers a laboratory course called secretarial prac- tice, which provides training in the opera- tion of business machines and gives prac- tice in office procedures. This pattern prepares students for immediate, initial employment after graduation. k TYPING STENOGRAPHY BUSINESS MACHINES 122 CONSUMER PROBLEMS BOOKKEEPING — CLERICAL The bookkeeping pattern includes two years of bookkeeping, two years of type- writing, and one year of accounting, office practice, and business machines. The clerical pattern offers one year of record keeping, clerical procedures, office practice, business machines, and two years of typewriting. The training in each area qualifies graduates for immediate employment. OFFICE PRACTICE 123 LANGUAGES FRENCH The destiny of the world is dependent upon the good relationships among its peo- ples; yet few Americans learn to communi- cate in any language other than English. A typical Vailsburg foreign language course in French. Spanish. Latin, or Italian not only teaches students the fund- amentals of reading and writing the foreign tongues, but also stresses cultural contribu- tions and historical background. This program helps to promote under- standing of and respect for other cultures, thus preparing students to cope with the chal- lenges of the world. SOCIAL STUDIES The Social Studies Department at Vailsburg High School, under the direction of Mr. John Pcttiti, offers an excellent curriculum in both required history courses and enrichment subjects. The courses consist of world history, U.S. His- tory I and U.S. History II. Elec- tives include international relations, economics, modern European his- tory, and civics. These subjects of- fer the student knowledge about the world of the past and preparedness for the life in the future. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS SCIENCES With scientific terms becoming household words and news of scien- tific exploration on everyone's lips, the well-rounded individual needs a knowledge of science as well as of the arts. The Science Department, headed by Mr. Rocco Misurcll, is doing its share in keeping V.H.S. students up- to-date scientifically. CHEMISTRY In the past three years, four science courses with new approaches have been introduced: PSSC physics, CHF.M Study chemistry, college chemistry, and the BSCS Yellow Version biology course. A four-year science curriculum consisting of biology, chemistry, phys- ics, and college chemistry is available for the exceptiorfal student. BIOLOGY PHYSICS Since, in the future, alumni of Vailsburg High School will en- counter more and more science in their homes and places of work, every graduate is required to have at least one year of science. 126 127 SHOP 128 BOYS' GYM PHYSICAL EDUCATION 129 By stimulating the exchange of ideas and the discussion of problems, the various extracurricular activities at Vailsburg High School help provide the insight and knowledge upon which peace through under- standing rests. At the end of the regular school day, teachers give freely of their time and knowledge to strengthen the students' interest in extracurricular clubs. The informal atmosphere of the clubs encour- ages the students to work and learn together and thus promotes under- standing. Students interested in music arc members of the band, orchestra, or chorus. Linguists arc able to practice their pronunciation and to put the language to practical use in the Latin. French, Italian, and Spanish clubs. The Vine and Pen in Hand give students an opportunity to ex- press themselves on paper. Athletically-inclined students join the vari- ous teams, the twirling squad, the pep club, or the cheerleaders. Active minds interested in science or mathematics are given a chance for ex- perimentation and discovery in the Math Club and the Future Physi- cians' Club. For those who are interested in preparing for a career, there are the Business Club or the Future Teachers of America. Stu- dents with high scholastic averages and an interest in school affairs are elected to the Student Council or the National Honor Society. 2. 130 131 STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: Standing: Madeline Cancellieri, recording secretary; Miss DeMartino, advisor; Valerie Valentini, treasurer. Seated: Linda Pecora, vice-president; Linda Verderame, president; Joanne Santoriello. The Council is made up of two groups: the Executive Board and the Board of Homeroom Represent- atives. Five officers, elected by the student body each year, make up the Executive Board: president, vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, and treasurer. The Board of Homeroom Representatives is made up of the homeroom presidents and vice pres- idents, who carry information to and from the homeroom and the Council meetings. The members of the homeroom present their problems and questions to the homeroom President, who, in turn, takes these matters to the Student Council meetings for discussion. The members of the Student Council work together to find the best possible solutions to these problems. Members of the Council have been of sen-ice to the school in many ways: selling bus tickets to football games, supporting the library book drive, and assisting as ushers at school functions. 132 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society inducts its members at a ceremony held near the end of the junior or senior year. Outstanding students having a B average and displaying the traits of Scholarship, Service, Leader- ship, and Character are eligible for con- sideration. Traditionally, members run a tutoring service for pupils in all grades. Under the guidance of Mr. Moskowitz and Mrs. Bacheller, the Stephen Crane Chapter introduced a new program this year. Realizing the problems of choosing colleges, the Society recently arranged col lege visitations for interested juniors. The members of the National Honor So- ciety have successfully carried out their responsibility to promote an enthusiasm for learning at Vailsburg. One of the most interesting extracurricular activities at Vailsburg is the Assembly Committee, supervised by Dr. Elias Levinson. The committee has the task of arranging programs, which supplement regular class instruction, and providing student chairmen for assemblies. During the last two years, the committee has brought to the Vailsburg High School stage a professional production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, several demonstrations in physics and chemistry, oratorical and poetry reading contests, and foreign language festivals. 135 Amidst the organized chaos of clicking typewriters and shouting voices the 1965 Valkyrian staff worked for months trying to create a memorable yearbook. In our crowded room, new and unusual ideas were, we hope, pleasingly blended with the old to provide an interesting and attractive publication. Taking snapshots, writing copy, making layouts, and meeting deadlines were only part of the hectic, yet satisfying job. It was fortunate for us that Mrs. Vekiaris and Mr. Eber selected the competent Thomas Magzen for the coveted position of editor-in-chief. Even as a junior he inspired his staff members to achieve the ambitious goals they had outlined. Tom's valuable ideas are in- corporated in every page of the yearbook. We have tried to make the Valkyrian an accurate re- flection of all aspects of Vailsburg High. We hope that in reading it you feel even a fraction of the fun and excitement we experienced in putting it together. Tom Magzen 136 VALKYRIAN EDITORIAL STAFF FRENCH CLUB 138 LATIN CLUB ITALIAN CLUB 139 FUTURE PHYSICIANS Members of the Future Physicians Club meet weekly to experiment, learn, and exchange ideas. They have operated on frogs, removed cows' eyes, studied the habits of mice, visited a pharmaceutical house, attended an annual health exhibit, heard lectures by leading doc- tors, toured a hospital, and witnessed an actual opera- tion. Although only amateurs, the members perform every experiment and dissection with a sincere desire to add to their knowledge and to explore the vast mysteries of medicine. The club is sponsored by Mrs. Murray. 140 MATH TEAM 1965 SENIOR MATH TEAM; Stated: Edwina Rissland, Jeff Javcrbaum, Sandra Frederick. Standing: Mr: Motkowitz, Joe Cnlavito, Vincent Bober. Richard Smith. Robert Gemra, Frank Passero, Allan Young. Vailsburg offers its superior math students the opportunity, through its Math Team, to use their knowledge and skill compet- itively. The team consists of sen- ior, junior, and freshman squads. In March, the seniors participate in a nationwide contest sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. In April, the entire team competes in a city-wide con- test held by the Newark Council of Teachers of Mathematics. As juniors, the 1965 senior squad, pictured here, proved to be Newark’s best. Helping Vailsburg to attain its champion«hip were Sandra Frederick, Robert Gemra, Jeff Javerbaum, Edwina Rissland, and Richard Smith. They swept five of the first ten positions in New- ark’s Junior Division. The Math Team is coached by Mr. Martin Moskowitz, chairmer of the Mathematics Department. Here at Vails- burg the many social events that we sponsored and attended provided such an atmosphere. The following pictures illustrate the social highlights of the junior and senior years. Mc- Intosh. % i Z CtfU f ropAecy Economics, which has been the underlying cause of so many con- flicts, is one of the most important grounds upon which peace through understanding can he achieved. Since his earliest attempts at trade, man has carried his culture as well as his wares to foreign shores. This exchange has been the cause of many long-lasting friendships as well as animosities. If understanding were established in business, it could conceivably spread to government and, finally, to the home. In commerce, be it barter or pecuniary dealings, it is essential that both parties involved know the value of what they arc getting as well as giving. With this in mind, our salesmen went out into the world to sell the boosters and advertisements needed to make their yearbook a financial success. They were met on a businesslike basis by many prospective customers and conducted themselves accordingly, making sure that everyone concerned understood the terms of the agreement. Of course, there were several altruistic friends and relatives who were willing to help as a gesture of sheer benevolence. We have tried to be fair in our financial dealings with the public and hope that this practice will stay with us through our adult years. We are deeply grateful for the understanding shown by all who assisted us and we hope that you will patronize the establishments ad- vertised on the following pages. 179 A Real Pal Mrs. Margaret Abruzzese Sam Accardi Mr. and Mrs. Jack Addesa Edward Addonizio Helen Addonizio Sue Addonizio Mr. and Mrs. R.
