HATL ENACLLIS Prom couples revive “Roaring Twenties.” A '22 Pontiac, gay flappers, silent films, and home- made bathtub gin transposed Juniors, Seniors, and their guests on April 18, 1970, to 'The Roaring Twenties world. Spotlighted, mirrored balls created hundreds of stars dramatically lighting 'Gym Whitley's Speakeasy, where couples danced to the rhythmic strains of the City Councilmen. The summit performance of the evening was the in- troduction of Outstanding Seniors, Class Officers, and Prom Committee Chairmen who, moving to the tune of Bonnie and Clyde, gracefully fashioned the figures seventy and twenty. To conclude the entertainment, sophomore waiters and waitresses competed for applause in a rousing interpretation of the Charleston. Clasped hands, orchids, and candlelight clinch a memorable evening for Prom Juniors, Marshall Baker and Robin Stell. A moment from the Twenties becomes a modern-day reality for four flippant flappers. Appropriately attired class leaders gallantly respond as they are intro- duced. The City Councilmen update the Roaring 20's with their vibrant refrain. Sporting immaculate tucks and flowing formals, couples interpret those 1970 tunes. Senior Week highlights art of giving. RG ei. Appreciation for the right to drop the dress code and for a delightful fellowship picnic on the school grounds was reciprocated by grass cutting and broom sweeping the parking lot and surrounding area. In regimented style, Seniors armed with brooms sweep the student parking lot clean. First Whitley musical captivates audience. Under the direction of Mr. Charles Burt, the Music Department presented Swingin High , its first musical comedy, in April, 1970. The plot revolved around a stern new principal who im- posed arigid disciplined routine until a chemistry class explosion tossed him into an amnesiatic state. Arousing from this as a real swinger, he coupled fun with learning for all his school folk. Regretful teachers bid farewell to Cooper High's retiring principal, Henry Moore. Those Were the Days , Whitley's popular Variety Show, played three nights in May, 1970, to a full house. Emceed by Dickie Stines and Larry Carter, the performance featured modern jazz routines, soul singing , and popular tunes. Everyday People, Commencement speakers challenge Semors. On Sunday afternoon, May 31, 1970, the Reverend Albert Fisher, Goldsboro District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church, challenged the Seniors to take full advantage of their own personal uniqueness and, using this, to make their greatest pos- sible contribution to mankind. Preceding the message, the Vocal Ensemble sang © Mag- num Mysterium and Call to Remem- brance. ” Mr. Charles Dunn, Director of the State Bureau of Investigation, addressed the Senior Class on Monday evening, June 1. Urging the members to look upon graduation Waste preparation, he encouraged them to utilize the knowledge they have gained to make this a better world. Special music was rendered by the Whitley Chorus and Band under the direction of Mr. Charles Burt. Following the presentation of the Senior Class by Mr. Stan- ley Dail, Principal; Mr. C. Devoting endless hours to the 1971 edition of The Shield, the staff members carefully and selectively assembled a review of the academic and extracurricular activities which transpired during the schoolyear. Responsible for important aspects of The Shield were the determined and dedicated writers and photographers who con- jointly strove with the invaluable aid of typists, artists, and sponsors to present a picture of life at Vaiden Whitley. Recalling the approaching deadline, Sponsor Mrs. Perry reminds Editor Nancy Woodard that much work remains to be done on 1971 Yearbook. Through meaningful projects, the Beta Club essayed to promote the values of achievement, character, and leadership. Launching the year's activities was a Satur- day morning clean-up of the Hill on which is located the school sign. Unanimous membership participation in serving approximately one thou- sand persons at a barbeque supper enabled the club to raise funds for the year's projects. Regular projects included giving morning devotions for the student body, raising and lowering the flag, and ushering for all school functions. Traditionally, twelve Beta members marshaled for Commencement Exercises. During the Christmas holidays, Beta members began preparations for their st ate, district, and county conventions. Other highlights of the year were a two-part ecological presentation, a visit by State President Jack Simpson, and the hospitable reception of the Wake County Beta Chapter. All activities fostered Beta fellowship. Councils accentuate value of oneness. Functioning as a direct line of communi- cation, the Student Council served both stu- dents and administration. It undertook more responsibilities in school affairs by assuming a more active role in various projects. Among these were sponsoring Home- coming activities, planning and supervising class officer election procedures, operating the concession stand at all football games, giving a faculty Christmas tea, and presen- ting a Christmas emphasis program to the student body. During spring semester, a School Beautification Week, and a St. Val- entine's Dance were held. To round out the year's work, the Council conducted Fresh- man Orientation and directed Senior Week. Officers and members attended county, district, and state meetings; workshops; and conventions. Climaxing convention cam- paigning was the election of Sally Freeman as State Second Vice-President. The Human Relations Council, cooper- ating with the Student Council, sought to cultivate an atmosphere of unity among students. Speakers at the monthly meetings en- deavored to instill in the members the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out the responsibilities in these areas. Visiting senior citizens'' and reading to day nursery children provided opportunities for further individual development. To climax the year's work, the young homemakers presented a fashion show, in which they modeled their own creations for an audience of proud parents. Among these were the Wendell Harvest Parade, Chadburn Strawberry Festival, and Christmas Parades in Wake Forest, Zebulon, and Raleigh. Their half time performances at home football games likewise evoked a sense of pride from the fans. The acquisition of a bass clarinet and a sousaphone broadened the performing scope of another Whitley musical group, the Con- cert Band, andenhanced their Christmas and spring concerts. In April they participated in the Regional Band contest in which last year's grouprated good. Their final perform- ance of the yearwas at the Commencement Exercises in June. A third group, the Dance Band, enter- tained civic clubs and provided the orches- tral background for the Department musicals.
