Senior Week: Rank has privileges. Enjoying the special privilege of wearing chosen apparel, one Senior strolls the halls of Whitley in borrowed square dance costume. Senior Week, a time for fun and jest, was sponsored by the Student Council. Throughout the week senior tyrants directed freshman slaves who were purchased at a public auction in the gym. Obeying the commands of their owners, the slaves carried books, polished shoes, ran errands, and performed many unique tasks. Wearing a particular type of apparel on each day of the week was another special privilege enjoyed by Seniors. This week continued to be a highlight of spring at Whitley. Peering cautiously beneath drape, Senior Bill Perkinson in¬ spects recently purchased freshman slave. Freshman Joe Ann Todd polishes to looking-glass perfection a senior shoe. 13

Prom setting is Shangri-La. Seniors, Juniors, and their guests treaded a bamboo-lined path to enter a candle-lit oriental world on Saturday evening, April 27, 1968. Brightly colored flowers, spreading fans, wild-eyed dragons, and Eastern scenes converted the student lounge and cafeteria into another world. On the school patio a fountain spilled into a rock encircled pool. Couples danced, chatted, and sipped sake as the music of the Atlantic Coast Show and Dance Band wafted through the air. It was Shangri-La. Prom waiters and waitresses pause at refreshment table for souvenir photo. The smiles of Barbara O’Neal and date symbolize the gay spirit of the Prom. School patio is transformed into a beautiful garden nook. A musical break provides an opportunity for introduction of Junior and Senior Class Officers. 12
