Created in the minds of men of courageous foresight, envisioned as a center of learning committed to the many facets of education, Vaiden Whitley, unsteeped in tradition and poor in heritage, embarked four years ago upon her course of spreading a “shining light of knowl¬ edge and integrity.” Weathering the growing pangs of youth, verging to take in a fourth, she has resolutely pursued her chartered course, providing multitudinous opportunities for aspiring young people to work, to play, to achieve, to excel. m 6 Contents-. One hundred twenty-four I Advisory Board Chairman, Mr. J. T. Knott, Jr., presents long-awaited diplomas to happy yet tearful graduates. The Class of 1968 assumes a dignified pose for final photograph. 10 On Sunday afternoon, May 26, 1968, Dr. Albert G. Edwards, pastor of Raleigh’s First Presbyterian C hurch, delivered the Baccalaureate Sermon to the 1968 Graduating Class. Preceding the message, the Vocal Ensemble sang “I’ll Walk With God” and “The Halls of Ivy.” The Honorable Robert B. Morgan, North Carolina State Senator, spoke to the Seniors at their Graduation Exercises on Friday evening, May 31. Special music was rendered by the Whitley Chorus under the direction of Mr. Charles Burt. After presentation of the Senior Class by Mr. Stanley Dail, Mr. J.T. Knott, Jr., Advisory Council Chairman, presented diplomas to the graduates. determined Seniors receive diplomas. Dr. Albert G. Edwards in¬ quires, “Are you unsatisfied, satisfied or dissatisfied?” The Honorable Robert Morgan urges Seniors to reach beyond as they accept life’s challenges. Prom setting is Shangri-La. Seniors, Juniors, and their guests treaded a bamboo-lined path to enter a candle-lit oriental world on Saturday evening, April 27, 1968. Brightly colored flowers, spreading fans, wild-eyed dragons, and Eastern scenes converted the student lounge and cafeteria into another world. On the school patio a fountain spilled into a rock encircled pool. Couples danced, chatted, and sipped sake as the music of the Atlantic Coast Show and Dance Band wafted through the air. It was Shangri-La. Prom waiters and waitresses pause at refreshment table for souvenir photo. The smiles of Barbara O’Neal and date symbolize the gay spirit of the Prom. School patio is transformed into a beautiful garden nook. A musical break provides an opportunity for introduction of Junior and Senior Class Officers. 12 Senior Week: Rank has privileges. Enjoying the special privilege of wearing chosen apparel, one Senior strolls the halls of Whitley in borrowed square dance costume. Senior Week, a time for fun and jest, was sponsored by the Student Council. Throughout the week senior tyrants directed freshman slaves who were purchased at a public auction in the gym. Obeying the commands of their owners, the slaves carried books, polished shoes, ran errands, and performed many unique tasks. Wearing a particular type of apparel on each day of the week was another special privilege enjoyed by Seniors. This week continued to be a highlight of spring at Whitley. On October 25, 1968, Alumni returned to the Vaiden Whitley campus to join in her third Home¬ coming celebration. Though spirits wera-dampcned by the football team’s one-touchdown loss to Smithfield, the half-time activities delighted and in¬ trigued spectators. The Marching Warriors rendered Tiajuana Brass selections; the Majorettes twirled flaming batons; and the Homecoming Court circled the field in shiny convertibles. Following this presentation Pam Williams was crowned Miss Vaiden Whitley of 1968. The new Queen retired from the field on the senior float, which was adorned with hundreds of blue and white paper flowers. A pleasant evening terminated with alumni and students dancing to the music of The Illusions. Selling became fun as stu¬ dents, homerooms, and classes competed for the purpose of raising the funds needed for purchasing a new activity bus. Soliciting magazine subscrip¬ tions initiated the drive which netted approximately three thousand five hundred dollars. Fifteen hundred dollars of this amount was realized from a second project, the sale of chocolate. At the close of these campaigns, high sales¬ men were awarded valuable prizes. Students under the able di¬ rection of Mr. Murphy also assisted with the operation of a concession stand at home ballgames. Profits earned from this operation were used to help defray increasing athletic expenses. Mr. Murphy scans impatient concession stand customers. Mobile units accommodate increased enrollment. Mrs. Leathers projects phrases for students who are working dili¬ gently to increase their reading speed. To accommodate a growing student body, it became necessary to supplement the new five-classroom wing constructed last year with the addition of five mobile units. In these trailers all social studies classes were con¬ ducted; and in a sixth, a remedial reading program oper¬ ated. 17 i Variety spices student life. Student life at Whitley was not all work and no play. Though study filled many hours of each day, there was often time between classes for a cheerful greeting to a special friend. Lunchtime, too, provided an opportunity for fellowship at the table or friendly banter while waiting in line. During football and basketball seasons, some days ended with stu¬ dents gathering in the gym or at the football field to spur the athletic teams to victory. One fall day was most outstanding, because prepara¬ tions were made for parents to come in the evening to see the school and to meet the teachers. Mr. Aaron Fussell Superintendent of Wake County Schools Coordinating the many functions of a school as large as Whitley was a difficult job. Guiding students, conferring with teachers, planning curriculum, and supervising the various school activities were tasks expertly executed by the Administration with Mr. Dail at the helm. His vast concern for the intellectual growth and full development of each student earned for him the respect and esteem of the student body. The Advisory Council and the Superintendent also worked to give the students of Vaiden Whitley an opportunity to mold their talents and abilities. They helped provide an environment which con¬ tributed to learning and to developing the total self. Because of the combined efforts of the Admin¬ istrative Staff, Whitley attained one of its prime objectives—accreditation by the North Carolina De¬ partment of Public Instruction. 23 to providing guidance, The Guidance Department direc¬ ted the student in establishing and realizing his goals by providing the following basic services: pupil con¬ sultation, individual inventory, in¬ formational services, placement and referrals. Keeping innumerable records, preparing daily bulletins, and assist¬ ing students and faculty were only a few of the ways the school secre¬ tary contributed to the smooth operation of the school. The school library created an at¬ mosphere conducive to pleasurable reading and to lear ning. Maintaining this atmosphere was the task of the school librarian. A working knowledge of past events for students was the prime concern of the Social Studies De¬ partment. The department sought to captivate the minds of its stu¬ dents by bringing alive the pageantry of the past. Miss Laura B. Gay Guidance Counselor Mrs. Gertrude R. For the first time girls enrolled in an agricultural course, horticulture. In addition, a new course, Elec¬ tricity and Electronics, enhanced the vocational training program. Many opportunities for per¬ formance were afforded by the band and chorus programs. Stu¬ dents gained a knowledge of music¬ al history as they molded their special talents. It was necessary to have two classes for choral training, because of increased interest in this phase of the musical program. To record more completely the happenings of the year, headlines replaced titles and a Student Life section was added. Always the prime objective was ex¬ cellence as it worked to compile the 1969 edition of The Shield. Sponsor Mrs. Perry confers with Yearbook Editor Rose Jones on proper placement of pictures as Staff Photog¬ rapher David Hendricks and Co-Business Managers James Strickland and Frances Henderson approve. The Beta Club, a service and leadership organization, engaged in several projects this year. Outstanding among these was the presentation of a trophy case to the school. In addition, the club gave a North Carolina Flag and an American Flag. At Christmas it assisted the County organization in sponsoring two foster children. To provide funds for these contributions, members par¬ ticipated in a Christmas Card Sale. Also, Betas were re¬ sponsible for raising the Hag daily, ushering at school functions, marshalling at commencement, and giving daily morning devotions. Ronnie Conoley delivers an inspirational devotion-a first initiated by Betas. MEMBERS: First row: Mike Watson, Bill Britt, Jan Whitley, Ronnie Conoley. During the year, it was involved in several worth-while projects. I Increased interest swelled the Whitley Chorus ranks from seventy-nine to one hundred twenty- three. Its performances were many. During the pre-Christmas season, it became a touring choir, singing at Wendell, Carver, Knightdale, and Rolesville schools. Also it united with the Band to provide a Christmas Concert for the local students. Participation in community holiday programs was an enjoyable function of the group. The Chorus led a Community Sing to welcome Santa Claus to Wendell and sang on the North Hills Mall for holiday shoppers. In the spring they entered the District Contest in Durham, hoping to match last year’s rating of excellent; and selected members joined with students from s chools over the state to form a 500-member All-State Chorus. The year’s activities terminated with the production of the Band- Chorus Concert and the performance in Grad¬ uation Exercises. The sixteen students composing the Ensemble performed for a variety of groups. These included the Wendell Rotary Club, Lockhart School, and Polk Youth Center. Their singing highlighted the Christmas and Spring Musical Concerts. In February they participated in the Solo and Ensemble Contest at which last year’s group received a Superior rating. The final presentation of the year was the rendition of “I’ll Walk with God” and The Halls of Ivy” at the Baccalaureate Sermon.
