Student Council President Jim Parish fits a customer dur¬ ing school store Jacket Sale. The Student Council of Vaiden Whitley High School is an integral part of the school ' s educa¬ tional program and is representative of the entire student body. Throughout the year it recognized astudent, or students, of the month with a special bulletin board display and operated the school store as a special school service. On the other hand, some projects were seasonal: assisting with Homecoming activities in the fall, giving a Christmas party for the faculty and staff, and sponsoring an Orientation Day for incoming fresh¬ men and participating in the national project Keep America Beautiful in the spring. Possibly its major project was compiling a scrapbook which gives a continuous picture of activities at Whitley Also, Council members participated in county, district, and state meetings. Beta Club Whitley Betas were hosts to the East Central Beta Convention for the second consecutive year. Long hours of planning and work resulted in the most suc¬ cessful convention yet. Frances Henderson was elect¬ ed vice-president, and Gene Yeargin was tabbed winner in the talent contest. Continuing to fulfill its responsibility as a leader¬ ship-service organization, the club had a school sign designed and erected at the entrance, purchased a new North Carolina flag, served as ushers for school functions, sponsored marshals for graduation, present¬ ed gold cords to Senior Betas, and assumed the re¬ sponsibility for raising the flags each day. Also Whitley boasts two County Beta officers: Jeff Heath, president; and Chris Underhill, reporter. The State Beta Convention being in Raleigh, all members attended. Gene Yeargin was entered in the State Talent Contest. High salesman, Phil Davis, urges another customer to purchase Christmas cards.
