In the beginning its interest centered on pan- tomimes, which were humerous examples of spontaneous acting by the individual members. By December the group was ready to give several one- act plays. Among these were Flying High and Love From Bud. The remaining meetings were involved with speech making and the writing of skits. All these activities enabled the club to realize its major goal-encouraging use of talents and perfor¬ mance with self-confidence before groups. 31 Future Homemakers of America Collecting food for needy fam¬ ilies and scraps of fabrics to be used by residents of the County Home in making of quilts were two of the most rewarding projects of the Future Homemakers Club. They also aided school and community organizations by serving and decorating for dinners and banquets. In late summer some of the girls assisted in hanging drapes in the School Offices and the Home Economics Classrooms. Engaging in such activities enabled the members to establish important patterns for future homemaking and community participation—the major goals of this group. Portions of this were pre¬ sented that week to students of neighboring schools and to the Whitley students on December 21. Teachers confer with parents in the halls.. . and in the class rooms. 57 Outstanding Seniors After careful consideration, the faculty chose eight seniors who best depicted these qualities: special service, capable leadership, excellent scholarship, and outstanding character. Samuel Attison Pittman Sammy Pittman represented Whitley in an outstanding manner in two varsity sports. He was voted Most Valuable Player in football for 1966-67 and in track for 1965-66. Highlighting his 1967-68 season was his being selected All- Conference Fullback. Sammy was also a credit to the Music Department in both the Mixed Chorus and Ensemble. Other services were rendered in the Beta Club and Mono¬ gram Club. He plans to enter a Military College, where he aspires to further his football career. Jeffrey Douglas Heath Jeff represented the school in several capacities on a district, county, and local level. In the Beta Club he served as local Vice-President for two years, as County and District President, and as Marshal at the State Con¬ vention. Four years ' membership in the FFA provided opportunities for service in the local Chapter as Reporter and President and in the Federation as Reporter and Vice - President. In athletics he lettered in football and baseball for four years, and basketball for three years. Jeff also worked on the Annual Staff for two years. Upon gradua¬ tion, he plans to pursue the vocation of Furniture Manage¬ ment and Manufacturing in the School of Engineering at North Carolina State University. 58 William Walter Perkinson Bill was active in many areas of high school life. He was the District Treasurer and County Reporter for the Beta Club. Bill also served in the capacity of President for both the Math and Science Clubs. Though not a player, long hours spent in managing baseball and basketball teams resulted in membership in the Monogram Club. In the summer of 1967 he represented Vaiden Whitley in the area of Math at The Governor ' s School. Working in the school office completed his service activities. After graduation he will enter North Carolina State University and major in Applied Mathematics. Susan Garnetta Pearce Serving as Editor of The Shield and Vice-President of the student body were ways Susan Pearce worked for her school. She was also a member of the Student Advisory Council during her sophomore year and was Treasurer of the student body as a junior. Representing Whitley with two other delegates, Susan attended the Student Council workshop at Mars Hill in 1966 and the State Convention in 1967. She has had the privilege of working in Whitley ' s active Beta Club and was high salesman for Christmas cards in 1966. A growing interest in the Spanish language which began in her sophomore year has prompted Susan to plan to major in that language at Appalachian State University. 59 Carol Ann Callahan Carol Ann was indeed an asset to the Music Department. An exceptional member of the Chorus and Ensemble, she often did vocal solos and piano accompaniment. In the Beta Club she served as Program Chairmanfor 1967-68 and as Secretary of the local FHA. For her outstanding citizen¬ ship, she merited the DAR award for 1967-68. Aspiring to be a teacher in the field of music education Carol will continue her studies in this field at Meredith College. John Christopher Underhill Chris Underhill was active in the Music Department throughout his years at Vaiden Whitley. During this time, he participated in the Mixed Chorus and Ensemble, serv¬ ing sometimes as accompanist. In addition to his musical activities Chris was District Vice-President and County Reporter in Beta Club, served as Copy Editor of the Year¬ book, and worked as statistician for several of the athletic teams. In 1966 he attended The Governor ' s School and studied in the area of Mathematics. Representing the school in the 1967 NSF Science and Math Program, he ranked in the upper part of his class. Chris plans to attend the University of North Carolina, where he will study Chemistry. 60 James Riley Parish Jim rendered excellent service to the Student Council throughout high school. This year was his busiest. He served as President of the Council and also as Vice-Presi¬ dent of the Monogram Club. Jim was a diligent worker in the Beta Club and the guidance office. He also served as President of his Sophomore and Junior Classes. In the summer of 1966, he attended the NSF Biology Program at Wake Forest College. He lettered in football for four years and in track for one year. Upon graduation he plans to attend a liberal arts college to study either Pre-Med or Pre-Law. Outstanding Seniors Philip Earl Davis Phil ' s most noted service to his school was rendered in fund-raising campaigns. Captain of his homeroom drives for three years, he pushed his class to the top in sales this year. Phil has also worked tirelessly in the fund-raising campaigns and activities of the Beta Club. This year he was a representative of the club to the State Beta Club Convention because of his work in its Christmas card drive. Having lettered in baseball, Phil has been in the Mono¬ gram Club three years. After graduation he plans to at¬ tend North Carolina State University to study Agronomy. 61 Marshals As one of its most privileged services, the Beta Club provides marshals for graduation.
