Encouraging members to do original thinking in connection with their projects rather than to follow the lines of purely deductive reas¬ oning has been the goal of the Ju¬ nior and Senior Math Clubs. Prob¬ ability, statistics, and the laws of chance have been tested through mathematical games. By using the hexstat, the club members readily proved there is a normal curve of distribution. By means of prepared talks, question and answer periods, they learned about the works of great mathematicians. Members have discovered that there is more to mathematics than dry formulas and firmly established rules, and that math can be interesting as well as didactic. 47 Future Teachers of America MEMBERS: First row: F. Preparing for future debates Striving to master the skills involved in becoming a good pub¬ lic speakerwas the major ambition of this society. Members received their first taste of speaking before an audience by delivering speeches on self-chosen topics. An opinion session gave the members an oppor¬ tunity to express their thoughts on the questions of going steady and of parental control. Debates during the year covered a wide range — from Resolved: That High School S tud ents Should Go Steady —to Resolved: That Nuclear Weapons Should Be Abolished. 53 Band The three bands and the majorettes served as repre¬ sentatives of the school in many activities in the com¬ munity and the state. The Marching Warriors performed during halftime at the football games and in parades and spring festivals. At Christmas and in May, the Concert Band presented its major performances; but the highlight of the year was participation in the Regional Band Con¬ test in G r e e nsb or o where the band, playing in Group Three, last year received a rating of good. The third company, the Stage Band, a group of 12 musicians who play popular music, performed for school and local func¬ tions and last year won first place in the competition at Millbrook. The majorettes, whether twirling fire batons or marching in front of the band, delighted all spectators. STAGE BAND: First row: Doug White, Jackie Thompson, Ricky Mitchell, Chris Underhill. In the fall, copies of the cheers were prepared and distributed to the stu¬ dent body. The girls expressed apprec¬ iation to the team by baking cookies and serving the football team after the game. Many happy Saturdays were spent dec¬ orating the float for the Homecoming queen and princess. Presenting flowers to the visiting cheerleaders at the Home - coming game was a joy. KILGORE President, Pine State Creamery Co. Back during the frantic days of World War I, military bases were popping up throughout the country. In Raleigh, plans were being made for the establishment of Camp Polk on the western outskirts of the city. When it was ready, the Army began preparing to send men to train for the fighting in the trenches of France and Germany. Rather suddenly, however, the movement of men and equipment was halted. The commanding officer of the new base, it seems, had learned that Raleigh offered no source of pasteurized milk. No milk, no base, he said rather firmly. Despite the critical need for training bases, the Army agreed with the commanding officer. After considerable negotiation, a small group of dairy farmers joined with N. C. State College to set up a small creamery on the college campus. Throughout the war, the facility provided badly- needed pasteurized milk to the military men. When the war ended, the same group of men decided to continue the enterprise as a private business. Under the direction of Mr. Alvin Reid, Pine State Creamery Company was established at 116 South Salisbury Street in Raleigh. In 1932, Dr. B. W. Kilgore became owner of the company and expanded its services into many other areas of the State. Each year has brought further expansion and more products and services from the company. As we plan for further growth and expansion, one can’t help but wonder what would have hap¬ pened if it had not been for the stubbornness of that Army officer more than four decades ago. 130 WHITLEY FURNITURE COMPANY AND GALLERIES The Home of Beautiful Furniture Serving Eastern North Carolina Since 1932 Telephone: 269-3541 Zebulon North Carolina 131 Compliments of COOLEY’S TRAILER PARK Route One Youngsville North Carolina Gold Medallion When you buy or build specify a Gold Medallion Home, and step up to the joy of All-Electric living.
