Our Yearbook On January 6, 1966, the staff unani¬ mously chose The Shield as the name of the Vaiden Whitley High School yearbook. The Warrior, our mascot, carries the shield, which is composed of three sections repre¬ senting the three areas consolidated to form this school. Just as its inscription depicted courage, pride, honor, and service to the ancient warrior, so does The Shield , our yearbook, portray the leadership, achieve¬ ments, honors, and activities of Whitley High School. Foreword Education has faced many frontiers. This year the curtain rose, unveiling a unique first for us, consolidation—Vaiden Whitley High School. Here it stood—a mere building boasting no established reputation, no stardust of memories, no grandstand echoes. Yet, this precedent for eastern Wake County, representing unfaltering patience, courage, and determination of a people willing to blaze another trail, presented a challenge indeed. Thus, with mixed emotions, eager anticipations, and even anxiety, we launched this year 1965-66. Realizing and grasping our privileges and responsibilities, we, the first student body of Whitley High, set out to begin its heritage. To create a wholesome school spirit was threefold. An atmosphere of friend¬ liness and toleration was paramount. A willingness to accept each other and his ideas prevailed. Pride in the new building itself produced the loyalty necessary to prevent clinging to the past. Equally important was a democratic spirit. No room existed for cliques or prejudices. Unity was imperative. Now, as it seeks to depict your first year, the first staff of The Shield salutes thee, Alma Mater. 10
