Adams; Mrs. John 0 Adams; W. M. Satterwhite; Ferd Davis; and Fred A. Smith, County Superintendent, the name Vaideh Whitley High School was selected for the new con¬ solidated high school in East Wake County. Mr, C, Vaiden Whitley rendered outstanding and devoted service as amemberof the County Board of Edu¬ cation from January, 1941, until April, 1963, serving as its chairman from 1956 to 1963. 4 Dedication A faith—in young people and their accomplish¬ ments An interest—in the educational advancement of youth A desire—for the necessary and proper facilities for the development of the whole individual For these, we respectfully dedicate The Shield to Mr. C. Vaiden Whitley of Zebulon, North Carolina. 5 Our Alma Mater These interested leaders of the Beta Club met with their sponsor, Mrs. Mae Heath, January 12, 1966, to compose the Alma Mater. With much enthusiasm and pride, they pooled their ideas to produce what they hope embodies the spirit of Vaiden Whitley. Then Mr. Charles Burt set the lyrics to music. FIRST ROW: Frances Tunstall, Mrs. Mae Heath, Linda Liles. SECOND ROW: June Buchanan, Virginia Glover, Sandra Horton, Gwen Seley, Mr. Charles Burt, Lucy Thomas, Ann House, Bobby Richardson. 6 Our Mascot In order to select a mascot and the colors for Vaiden Whitley High School, a group of students equally representing the three areas met on May 21, 1965, at Vaiden Whitley High School. At this meet¬ ing suggestions were made for a mascot and school colors. On June 10, 1965, this same group selected the Warrior as the official mascot and Navy Blue and Columbia Blue as the official school colors. FIRST ROW: Gayle Clifton, Diane Watkins, Joyce Pope, Frances Tunstall. SECOND ROW: Jerry Wall, Betty Raybon, Keimy House. Our Colors Navy Blue Columbia Blue 7 Our Yearbook On January 6, 1966, the staff unani¬ mously chose The Shield as the name of the Vaiden Whitley High School yearbook. The Warrior, our mascot, carries the shield, which is composed of three sections repre¬ senting the three areas consolidated to form this school. Just as its inscription depicted courage, pride, honor, and service to the ancient warrior, so does The Shield , our yearbook, portray the leadership, achieve¬ ments, honors, and activities of Whitley High School. This year the curtain rose, unveiling a unique first for us, consolidation—Vaiden Whitley High School. Here it stood—a mere building boasting no established reputation, no stardust of memories, no grandstand echoes. Yet, this precedent for eastern Wake County, representing unfaltering patience, courage, and determination of a people willing to blaze another trail, presented a challenge indeed. Thus, with mixed emotions, eager anticipations, and even anxiety, we launched this year 1965-66. Realizing and grasping our privileges and responsibilities, we, the first student body of Whitley High, set out to begin its heritage. To create a wholesome school spirit was threefold. An atmosphere of friend¬ liness and toleration was paramount. A willingness to accept each other and his ideas prevailed. Pride in the new building itself produced the loyalty necessary to prevent clinging to the past. Equally important was a democratic spirit. No room existed for cliques or prejudices. Unity was imperative. Now, as it seeks to depict your first year, the first staff of The Shield salutes thee, Alma Mater. 10 Administration Mr. Fred A. Smith, Superintendent of Wake County Schools. ADVISORY COUNCIL: SEATED: Dr. Clifford Horton, Mr. Waymon Morgan, Mr. D. B. Jones, Mr. C. Sidney Williams, Mrs. B. L. Cousins, and Mr. June Privette. STANDING: Mr. Stanley Dail and Mr. Jimmy Buchanan, (not pictured-Mr. H. H. Jones). 12 Mr. Stanley Dail, Principal A willingness to accept the responsibility for one ' s actions and deeds is an indication of maturity. Your co¬ operative spirit and sound judgement have played a great part in holding the problems of establishing a new high school to a minimum this year. You have no control over the fact that you are heading into a world that is so swept by the winds of change that some of you may have to train yourselves for from three to five occupations within your life time. The consistent character of your learning and one winch will be useful in all situations is thinking. Contrary to the belief of some, the skill of thinking can be cultivated and greatly improved through continued use of this mental process. As you continue in life ' s endeavor, either here at Vaiden Whitley High School or elsewhere, continue to de¬ velop your sense of responsibility, remain ever mindful of the changes around you, engage yourselves in positive thinking, and be reminded that an honorable goal is to make the world a better place for other people to live be¬ cause you have been here. 13 Office Mrs. Gertrude Tisdale Guidance Miss Blanche Gay Faculty Mrs. Patricia P.
