LESSONS TO UNDERCLASSMEN FIRST: Draw pictures. This is an inexpensive, time-consuming, polite, and quiet thing to do. (Use notebook paper so it looks like you’re taking notes.) SECOND: If that doesn’t interest you, get someone in trouble. Works like a charm to dispel boredom simply because the teacher stops talking. This can be achieved quite easily by subtly annoying the person in front of you. That person will eventually turn around, yell at you, and get in trouble with the teacher. THIRD: Try gazing out the window and daydreaming. If that does not work, just simply put your head down and sleep, it works for us. FOURTH: If you aren’t tired, ask the teacher a question that has nothing to do with the class, or call the teacher by his or her first name. (This drives them crazy.) If the teacher ask you a question, totally agree with them. FIFTH: Throw spit wads, snap people with rubber bands, or just start pounding on them. BUT, if you can think of something better to do, go ahead and try it, if you’re feeling brave. Staring at the foxiest girl in the class is the very best solution for solving boredom. WEAR BOXER SHORTS. That way if you forget your P.E. clothes nobody will know the difference. 2. PATTERN YOUR LIFE AFTER MINE. This will insure you of respect, good looks, and success wherever you go. 3§ SPEND OUTRAGEOUS AMOUNTS OF MONEY ON PERSONAL BELONGINGS. You will always exude confidence and “coolness” when you are well dressed. 4. STICK YOUR FEET OUT THE WINDOW OF A CAR WHILE DRIVING. This shows other drivers how relaxed you are. 5. BE AS OBNOXIOUS AS POSSIBLE IN PUBLIC PLACES. This insures that you are the center of attention. HOW TO BE UNCOOL 1. WEAR CAMOFLAGE. This will enable you to blend in and not be noticed. 2. LET YOUR GIRLFRIEND HAVE THE UPPERHAND ALWAYS. Obedience school is a good idea, this prevents many embarrassing public scenes. 3. INDULGE IN RECREATIONAL CHEMICALS. This enables you to act stupid and later not to remember what happened. 4. JUMP SOMEONE FROM BEHIND IN A FIGHT. This is a nasty practice that will give you a very bad reputation. by Scott Fross Glenn Howell Becky Inman Jeff Jickson Dee Jockish Stacey Kost Mike Lannery Jim Lascellas Mandy Li dwell Becky Lotz Jerry Marklev Brad Bavall Bill McCamant 11 1. ALWAYS MAKE A JOKE OF EVERYTHING. This enables you to accept anything which faces you. 2. ALWAYS PRETEND YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING. This makes you look smarter. (Even if you are not.) 3. ALWAYS TREAT UPPERCLASSMEN WITH RESPECT. This enables you to live through your High School years. 4. KEEP YOUR TEACHERS ON YOUR GOOD SIDE. This enables you to receive the best possible grade. (Hopefully and A) 5. NEVER USE ANY SIGN LANGUAGE UNLESS THE TEACHER’S BACK IS TURNED. This keeps you out of unnecessary and stressful punishment situations. 6. KEEP AN AMPLE SUPPLY OF PAPER. This makes it possible to construct the cheat sheet needed for the test you forgot about. 7. NEVER CROSS YOUR ENEMY. Enemy is defined as any superior figure who could destroy your future. (Ex. Principal) 8. NEVER ASK STUPID QUESTIONS. This could lead to even more stupid answers. 9. NEVER SPEND MORE THAN 15 MINUTES ON HOMEWORK. Why take the chance of straining your brain? 10. LAST BUT NOT LEAST FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IN PREVIOUS TWO LESSONS. Hopefully these tips will lead to a more enjoyable High School life. by Becky Inman — Sr. 1. Bill 2. Dee 3. Stacy 4. Rhonda 5. After the years of schoolwork, graduation for the class of 1988 finally came on June 3, 1988. Personally, I was glad to graduate from high school and move on with the rest of my life. On the other hand, a few people in the class were saddened by the thought of graduating and branching out into the real adult world. By quickly taking a glance down the sophomore hallway while lining up for the processional, I observed that quite a few seniors were nervous about appearing before the largest crowd they had ever appeared. During the ceremony, however, the butterflies in our stomachs were alleviated somewhat by Becky Inman’s comic goof up during her salutatory address. I don’t know if the other seniors feel the same way I do, but I don’t think I will appreciate graduating until school begins next year. — Mike Waters Valedictorian Senior Science Award: Michael Waters. (where else are approximately 40 people from V.I.T. going to go on a limited budget). With our experienced driver Otis as a guide, we quickly arrived in St. Louis at the Union Station. Although, Union Station is a nice place, I am sure that most of the senior guys and perhaps some of the girls, would suggest that future classes not plan to spend three hours there. I don’t know whether or not it was planned but the seniors greatly appreciate the people at Marriots giving Us CLASS TRIP adjoining suites. Although it was quite cool, a few brave souls decided to brave the rapids of Thunder River when we went to the fun park of Mid America, Six Flags. Reluctantly, we left St. Louis at eight in the morning, after our night of fun in St. Louis. — Mike Waters 21 1. This was our year to buckle down on our studies, tackle the ACT, and drag a date to Prom. This year we met Mr. Inman’s baffling chemistry formulas and we learned to dodge Mrs. Knowles’s probing stares. Headed by our “no nonsense” President, Jenifer Jones, we organized the ’88 Prom. In all our good tastes, we decided to hold the dance at the W.I.U. Union in the Class Officers: Jenifer Jones — Pres. Trent Robertson — V. Pres. Stacy Noe — Sec. Phil Marshall — Treas. Delhi Room. (Impressive, huh?) Anyway it was a big success and the dance was enjoyed by all and blah, blah, blah. (You’ll hear all this on the Prom page anyway.) I couldn’t begin to tell you all we did this year. Anyway, I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that this year has been the most challenging, exciting, fun time in our lives. See you next year. The first week of school was spent choosing our class rings. When they came in, we were all anxious to see what everybody’s looked like. Each one was as unique as the person who chose it. We all aged Miss Evans 5 years going through Driver’s Ed. this year. There were no major accidents, except when Jenny Kost hit a cat with the Driver’s Ed. car! Our money maker was the traditional magazine sale; Shannon Chenoweth was our top sales person. We also participated in sports, cheerleading, and the school play. This year we ONCE AGAIN sponsored the Homecoming festivities which included the Dance, the goof-off week, the little parade around the football field, and there we witnessed the PATHETIC attempts of Astoria to beat US in a game of football. There are few things to say about the stu. co members unless you want to count the availability of COKE at lunchtime OH the BRAND, NEW, shiny scoreboard we hung this year OR the STEREO SYSTEM we were generous enough to buy for the school ... NO! 1 guess you can’t say much about the members or their dedication, or their selflessness in REFUSING to go on a group trip just so we could give the school a little more ... (well, actually, we all just thought that a trip to McDonalds for a HAPPY MEAL was an insult after all the work we’ve done. Besides, we had our hopes set on JUMER’S) But anyway, we do this all for the students of V.I.T., believe it or not, and we all enjoy acting the martyr for all your gripes and complaints in front of Mr. Hull and the school board. Well, I’ll end now OH! I almost forgot the officers. Our president was Mike Waters, vice was Quinton Baily, treasuror was Billy Waters, and secretary was ME-the hardest working, dedicated, suffering member of the WHOLE group. — Susie Green Stu. Yes . .. another school year goes by, another annual is published. Every fall the students receive a yearbook, have their friends sign all over them, and then they are quickly banished to the closet or under the bed as soon as they arrive at their new homes. But let’s wait a minute. Do you know how many hours were put into making this book one that you can enjoy 5 or 10 years down the road? DO YOU KNOW how many tears were shed over this book? How much BLOOD and Sweat was put into this BOOK! NO!! Of course you don’t! Only those with dedication, preserverance, HEART AND SOUL, worked on this book. And for all you WIMPS out there who just sit around on your cushy chairs thing about what’s on T.V., next, let me just say one thing ... no, no, let me say TWO things . .. First of all, if you had any self-respect what so ever, you would join this fine organization and show this world what you’re really made of! Second of all, those of you who never look at your yearbook unless you want to Find your goofy mug somewhere had better straighten up! This “Book” deserves some RESPECT!! It was based on the Fine students of V.I.T. and portrays their uniqueness. ideals, and talents, YOU make up this book and it shouldn’t lay around collecting dust. Liz “mad dog” Burton, our advisor, has once again turned a group of students into a lean, mean yearbook-making, machine. We devote our study halls to the yearbook. Our weekends are spent collecting information for the yearbook. One week of our summer vacation is spent at camp for the year- book. You may ask why we do this, but the only explanation is . . (wait! why do I do this?) ... the only explanation is that we all have one dream, one goal we all strive for, ... to see the product of our hours of work published and handed out to the students, to see their faces transformed as they open the pages, to see . (sob) .. (excuse me) . . . To KNOW that we have preserved a little bit of history in our pages. Yes ... you may ask why we do this, but you’ll never really understand until you join the staff — the few, the proud, the masochists. — Susie Green editor-in-chief SCHOLASTIC BOWL In this most momentous year, the J.V. and Varsity scholastic bowl teams traveled to several tournaments around the area and held their own against the regions top intellects. We competed in tournaments at Industry, Spoon River College, Farmington, and Bushnell, keeping the Hornets’ academic status alive. At Industry, we did especially well with the J.V.’s taking a first place trophy and the Varsity registering a third place. We thank Mrs. Knowles for her efforts and hope to do as well next year. Senora Hull, our brave sponsor, was very cooperative and helpful with everything we tried to accomplish. The best time we had was when the members received sombreros, stickers, balloons, and other Spanish articles during National Foreign Languages Week. To begin the year, officers were elected, President, Stacy Derry; Vice-president, Brian Stoops; Treasurer, Becky Inman; and Secretary, Bambi Burgard. The annual initiation was planned and the many inductees enjoyed the embarassing feats they were asked to perform. Our annual fundraiser was a cheese and sausage sale, which proved extremely successful. With our hard-earned funds, we cosponsored the Sweetheart Dance, featuring Intruder as entertainment. To bring another eventful year to a close, we celebrated with a trip to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. We chartered a bus, and Otis, our comical driver, deposited us at our destination safely. The Science Club took in the interesting exhibits before boarding the bus some six hours later with weary minds and exhausted bodies, not to mention the arms full of souvenirs. The club would like to thank our helpful sponsor, Mrs. Webb, for her undying loyalty to Science. 4. Row 1 — C. Rench, B. By Bambi Burgard McCamant, T. Robertson, and Heather Stevenson Q. Baily, S. Mrs. Burton mercilessly led the weary, pathetic Junior and Senior High band members and pom pon squad down the tar bubbled streets of Vermont to prepare us for our appearances at home football games. Down the streets we marched — our shoulders sagging, THIRSTY, BEGGING FOR WATER OR AT LEAST A BREAK ... but NOOO instead we marched on out of tune, disspirited, and dehydrated. Our appearances at the football and basketball games, I’M SURE, gave our team that extra boost of energy they needed to pull out a victory. The rousing, overplayed tunes of “Go You V.I.T.”, “We Belong to the City”, and everybodys favorite, “Tequila” bellowed out to the audience. After the ball seasons were over the band and chorus were active in a number of music festivals and concerts. In the fall the Jr. High chorus presented the “Trial of the Big Bad Wolf’. And for graduation, both the highschool chorus and the concert band performed, “Pomp and Circumstance” and “Look Beyond Tomorrow”. We would like to express our appreciation to the Music Boosters for their continued support!!! — Susie and Jenny 45 GENERAL Mrs. Snowden and Mrs. Young are to be commended for another spectacular theatrical event. They put alot of time and effort into the last play of the season. The General is Coming, The General is Coming! Throughout the seven weeks of practices, the cast made the long hours bearable with addition of their own comedy, however, the directors kept them on track. The night of dress rehearsal the play shaped up considerably, even though, we had to iron out the last few hobbies, the incredible blunders, and the last hang ups. With any luck, theater will continue to exist at V.I.T. because the final night yields a rewarding sense of achievement and an experience for all involved (even the audience)! On the good side of the coin, we finished second in the conference, beat Coldhes-tor on a last second shot, and had a good time usually. On the darker side of the coin, we finished 6-18, lost in the first game of the regional, and lost to Valley twice. Although we were all close friends, we never quite got our teamwork down. Even though our basketball season could in no way be construed as mag-nificient, our record of 2-14 for the varsity and 4-8 for the J.V. wrongly overshadows the dedication and will to win every single girl displayed in practice and in the games. The cameradarie of the players and the good times in practice made the season a memorable one. Also, last but certainly not least, Mr. Kelly, who rarely lost his temper after a horen-dous loss (ha, ha) kept our spirits up and instilled a sense of pride in all of us. This year’s softball team experienced a variety of disappointments and triumphs. Despite our mutual love of the game and our comraderie on and off the diamond, we were slighty disappointed by our 5-5 record. In spite of this we thouroughly enjoyed the season and the seniors would like to thank Miss Evans for her in incredible patience and her consistent good humour. We know that she will miss all of our chaotic mannerisms. Foi example, Theresa “space cadet” Reedy who never attended a single game with her uniform, glove and catcher’s equipment intact, and Stacey Kost, who took a nonchalant attitude at second base and earned the nickname “vacuum cleaner”, and Stacy “played every position on the field” Derry who nearly broke poor little Paige’s hand every time she threw from short to first. We were a motley crew, but we will never forget the good times we had together. — Stacey Kost and Heather Stevenson A BIG THANKS goes to the sports booster club for another job well done. We did not merely win; we dominated, crushing the hopeless pirates beneath our heel like the weak, crawling insects that they are. For the 18th year in a row the stampeding Hornets stomped on the weak pirates, clinching yet another battle in the hard-fought war between the two teams. Before the game Coach Begley gave us such a powerful speech that the locker room virtually vibrated with our enthusiasm; until we saw the crowd that was flowing I down the hill towards the field in a loud buzzing swarm. Then we knew that we had to win this game for the school, for the crowd, but most of all, for ourselves. ervousness was like a plague for both teams. Neither scored in the first half. The defense simply neutralized the offense. At halftime, while the band played and the cheerleaders cheered and the attendants rode around the field in the trucks, a frazzeled Coach Begley rapidly spelled out a number of plays designed to pull us ahead. Coach did his job well for we promptly marched 70 yards for an exhilerating touchdown on our first offensive series. Faron Heller expertly executed the preplanned fumble and Bill McCamant, in a stunning display of athletic prowress, dove onto the ball to win us the extra point. The score remained 8-0 until the final gun sounded, triumphantly placing yet another win against Astoria in the Hornet record books.
