Despite his high school age daughters interest in boys and dates Dad pushes ahead with better organization for his large and delightful family. Theres an important meaninv and imperatixe reason for it all. Dad has a heart condition which hes keeping secret from the family. He knows that hes on bor- rowed time and thats why hes doing his best to make his family efficient and get them as far along through school as possible. He wants to leave the lightest possible load on Mother. The girls not knowing this don't understand why Dad regards their in- terest in dates as a waste of precious time. Nor does Dad understand high school girls. Dad is about to leave for Europe and both he and Anne the oldest daughter are miser- able at the lack of understanding between them. Finally, Dad becomes aware of how much Anne has grown up and that of course she should have dates and go to dances. At the same time Anne realizes the truth about Dad. Their understanding is complete.
