Administration and the McIntire School of Com- merce were separated from the College of Arts and Sciences. Thus the College is now composed of students seeking an education in the liberal and fine arts and in the natural sciences. The College-containing twenty-six depart- ments of instruction, a full-time faculty of 160 and a student body of 1,800-is much larger than any of the other schools. Several years ago, the College was divided into four associations, each with its own Dean and Resident Advisor. The existence of these four groups provides the stu- dent with the atmosphere of a small college while he enjoys the advantages of a large uni- versity. Dean William L. Duren. Jr. and Thomas E. Cros- Iey, President. Left to right: W'arner Butler, Historian; George Elder, Secretary-Treasurer; Bud Billups, Vice-President; Thomas Cros- ley, President. ...... - :7':; 1a.? I 1i 19

T be College of Art; and Science: Under the guidance of Thonms jefferson. James Madison and James Monroe the Univer- sity, known at that time as Central College, was founded in 1816. The ideal cherished-that of providing a means of liberal education for the general broadening of minds-has been retained and extended to the present day. In 1819 the col- lege was granted a charter by the General As- sembly of Virginia, which renamed the institu- tion the University of Virginia and installed Mr. Jefferson as the first rector of the Board of Visi- tors. Mr. Jefferson was faced with a serious prob- lem while attempting to mold the college into his desired institution. Because he refused to have the college associated with any church, Mr. Jeffersun had to find capable laymen for his Charter faculty. As a result, three Americans and five Englishmen were employed. One of the Americans, Henry St. George Tucker. the first philosophy professor, was greatly instrumental in originating the Honor system. Since 1842, the Honor System has been the code of existence at the University. Through the years. the University of Virginia has grown with the increasing demands of the country, leading in some fields and readily fol- lowing in others. Some of the major additions since Mr. Jefferson's time are the professional schools of Law, Medicine, Education, Engineer- ing, and Graduate Studies. In 1954, the School of Architecture, the Graduate School of Business
