.-.....a t, .72... R. DARDENiS announcement, on June 14, 195 8, of his retirement from the presidency of the University started a long series of intensive meetings of the Board of V isitors. The Board finally concluded that the best candidate was right here at the University, and on M February 28, 195 9, the group announced the appoint of Edgar T. Shannon as the fourth president of the University. Mr. Shannon has accomplished as much in the first forty years of his life as some manage to accomplish in twice that time. The son of a distinguished professor of English at W ashington and Lee University, he holds degrees from W. 8: L., Duke, and Harvard Universities, and as 21 Rhodes Scholar, from Oxford University. While attending these institutions, Mr. Shannon proved himself to be a man of many abilities, performing with equal success in academic and athletic activities. While serving in the Navy during the Second World War, Edgar Shannon added many military awards to his impressive list of academic honors. The year of 195 6 was a big one for the professor, for aside from joining the faculty of the University of Virginia, Edgar Shannonimarried Eleanor Bosworth, a bmagna cum lauden graduate of Sweet Briar College, and a fomier Dean of Women of Southwestern College. In his inaugural address, Mr. Shannon called for the rededication of all responsible for the welfare of the University if molding, in Mr. Jeffersonis words, a uUniversity on a plan so broad and liberal and modern as to be worth patronizing with the public support, and to be a tempetation to the youth of other states to come and drink of the cup of knowledge and fratemize with us? It is with much pride that this edition of CORKS 8: Guns marks the charter year of his presidency, and it is with con- fidence and interest that the University of V irginia begins a new era with Edgar F inley Shannon. 11
