A MID-CENTURY GLANCE BACK In the spring of 1888, when the first Conxs AND CURLS appeared at the University, handlebar mustaches and long side- burns were common sights about the grounds. The familiar chant of 'tWahoo-wahm was a thing unknown; instead, the athletic teams were cheered on to victory with dignified cries of, Rah, rah, rah; VAR-SI-TY; rah, rah, rah, Hi; The average student was living on flva hundred and fifty dollars a year, and the school colors were cardinal red and silver grey. There was an enrollment of approximately three hundred and fifty students, half of whom smoked, half of whom wore beards . . . and eighty-two percent of whom were Democrats. The Board of Visitors had gradually evolved from the form of a strict disciplinary body to that of a constructive com- mittee composed of prominent and capable citizens who were interested primarily in the progress and development of the University. No longer did they expell students for offenses such as throwing bricks at professors, attacking fellow students with pistols, and being out of uniform. Through the years, sixty-one more editions of the CORKS AND CURLS have appeared. They have shown the changes in the University as they have occurred-They have shown the gradual broadening and strengthening of JeEersonian ideals of education.
