INCE over a hundred years ago, when Jefferson took such pains to have a group of notable scholars brought to Virginia to form its first faculty, it has been one of the distinctions of the University of Virginia to have among its professors men who were memorable not only for their teaching or their scholarship, but for themselves. To the eminent names that have endowed the University of Virginia in the past with rich associations of a human quality is now added that of James Morris Page. For a generation more students have known him personally than anyone else at the University. For thousands of them he represented the place somewhat as the Rotunda and the Lawn do. As Chairman of the Faculty he was official head of the institution when a first president was chosen and when President Alderman came into ollice, Dr. Page became the first dean of the College and the University. Probably in the history of American colleges no other dean ever developed such an affectionate and confiding relationship with students, and retained at the same time their respect for his authority and the full measure of his dignity. He was a brilliant mathematician, a richly endowed teacher, an executive of sound judgment, and he rendered a valuable and distinguished service to Virginia as a member for years of the State Board of Education. He will be most lovingly and for the longest time remembered as Dean Page of Virginiaf' -JAMES SOUTHALL WILSON. l
