After an association of more than twenty- five years with him, I find it altogether impossible to resolve myself into the mood of a detached and dispassionate critic; since I entertained for him a respect closely akin to reverence, together with a lively affection which the passing years served only to intensify and to deepen. .mIJU T 18 to me difficult, indeed, to write of President Alderman with either x Few men ever faced a task so difficult, so delicate and so dangerous as did he, when, in I904, he came to the University of Virginia to be its hrst president. But, fortunately, too, few men faced any task with such splendid equipment as he brought to his new duties. Still in the early forties, he had yet made an impressive record as the president of two important yet widely different Southern universities, the University of North Carolina, his own alma mater, and Tulane University of New Orleans. His buoyant idealism, which he kept untarnished until his death, had even then been tempered by concepts of practical service, as it had been bound to lofty purpose and to noble aim. He had been, and always remainerl, an educational dreamer, yet one who appreciated which dreams could, and which could not. be trans- lated from impalpable visions into vibrant realities. His task was to create the new University of Virginia out of the old University. The ancient spirit was there, but unless that spirit could be revivihed and made incarnate in manifestations of the modern world, it could not give life, nor could it quicken the youth who turned to it for guidance and under it sought light. To his everlasting credit, it may be said that President Alderman was quick to appreciate this idea and with his hery and indomitable energy he swiftly began to put it into effect. But he was far too wise to try and do too much immediately. What was needed was a reorganization and a refashioning, but not a revolution. So he began with tireless patience to analyze that ancient spirit of the Univer- sity and to inform himself from all available sources what it had already done and, which was even more vitally important, what it might be made to do. To suggestions from students, alumni, faculty and friends of the University, 1101
